  1. I've not stayed there, but I've stepped in - I'm trying to experience many of Chicago's hotels (in the meantime, have done lots of research on nearly all of them) and the Allegro is def. on my list, but I haven't worked my way there yet. Looks like a fun and funky hotel and you definitely got a really good deal. Have fun on your trip here and enjoy the game - I took a baseball road trip with my parents when I was little, only ours was a tour of minor league ballparks in Illinois and Iowa. Fun small-town journey.
  2. $69 for Westin River North in Chicago ($179 otherwise) Called hotel and upgraded to a river room for $40 $109 for a room that would be about $220-230 (the river rooms cost more)
  3. I've uploaded a pic taken out my room's window: http://www.geocities.com/dvdmovie6/PICT4893.jpg A few reflections from in the room, but it gives you a good idea of the view at night.
  4. Westin for $89 is a good deal from Hotwire. Ended up getting the Westin for $69 on Priceline for 3/11 and they allowed me to upgrade for $40, which got me an AMAZING river view room and free continental breakfast. Here is a picture out of the room I got on the 17th floor: http://www.geocities.com/dvdmovie6/PICT4893.jpg Essentially, I didn't think they'd give me a prime room when I walked in, so I called - the woman over the phone said I could upgrade for $50 and get free cont. breakfast. It turned out to be $40 though, not $50.
  5. Congrats on the win - just for your info, there's a CVS Pharmacy and 7-11 around the corner if you need anything while at your hotel (instead of having to buy something in the hotel that you could get at one of those two places). There's also an "L" train stop right next to the 7-11.
  6. Ended up getting the Westin River North in a ridiculous deal on priceline - $69 for 3/11 - the lowest I've ever read about it going for. Was thrilled with the deal, but wanted to ensure a river-view room, and was willing to pay $40. Called Thursday night when I got the room and was told, because of priceline, they could only see about something like that when I checked in. Friday morning, I thought I'd try again. I didn't have any real "dressy" clothes at hand, and I thought - had a feeling - they wouldn't give me a river view room if I just walked in in casual clothing and tried to reason with the hotel staff. So, I tried calling. The woman said that I could upgrade to a river suite for $50, and I'd also get a free continental breakfast. So, all-in-all, the room would cost $120 before taxes. Still good for the river view rooms, which apparently command a premium of about $50-60 over the regular rooms (I was getting an approximately $230 room for approx. $120). She blocked off the room over the telephone and I was all set. Get there and the front desk staff was okay - not cold, by any means, but that sort of impersonally friendly - "trained" friendly. Anyways, the hotel used to be a Japanese hotel - the Hotel Nikko - and the lobby is heavily Japanese-styled, complete with a lowered restaurant area/sushi bar. The elevators have carved designs in the back of them. There was a very nice gift shop also off to the side. We get up to the 17th floor (20 floors in all - I believe 18,19,20 are business suites/rooms) and walk into the room and there's just a stunning view of the river. The room doesn't seem like a "suite", really, but it does certainly seem like a large/oversized room. There's a fairly lengthy hallway in the room, and off to the side in the hall is a mid-sized bathroom. You walk out into the room and to one side is a large desk area and the TV, and to the other side is the Westin "Heavenly Bed". The front of the room, facing the river, was sort of like half of a half circle - there was a nice sitting area and big windows looking out over the river. The nice thing about my room and the room next to it was that it's out a little bit, so you are literally looking down on nothing but river. There's a small walkway in-between the hotel and the river, but if you jumped from the window from my room, you'd hit water. At night, the view up along the river was pretty amazing. We had a big view up West along the river, but also had a pretty nice view East, although not a complete view East like we had looking West. The room next door appeared to have the opposite - big view East, good but not complete view West. We could see the lake through some buildings. The Westin Heavenly Bed was definitely really nice - my finance didn't want to get out of bed - she jokingly wondered if they'd notice if we lugged a bed out the front door. They do sell the mattress in a catalog in the room, however - I think it was something like $1000. Shower had the Westin Heavenly Shower - 2 shower heads. The room was nice and the view was GREAT, but the room didn't have much "personality". It's obviously a business hotel and not too funky in the rooms, where the Japanese flavor isn't carried over, unfortunately. The bathroom, with black marble tile, had more snap. The TV was also pretty underwelming - it appeared to be an older model 20 inch Philips that appeared to have been there for a while (the Courtyard Marriott we recently stayed in had a 27-inch flatscreen). Room was clean, though, and not worn in any way. Peeked into some of the other rooms on the floor when the maids were working, and they did not seem quite as big as our room. The hallways were clean and well-lit, and the ice machine was down the way. We went down to the restaurant in the morning to see what the deal was with the continental breakfast. Surprisingly, there weren't too many people there, and the breakfast was set out. it consisted of some pastries/breads/muffins, fruit, cereal and oatmeal. I ended up just having a muffin and a little pastry - fiance had some fruit and said it was fresh and quite good. It was free and the quality was good, but the selection was a bit underwhelming - some eggs would have been nice. We got much more at the Residence Inn in downtown Chicago by Water Tower place, which had a really nice spread laid out for breakfast, including big muffins, bagels, drinks, eggs, meat, cereal and even waffle makers. They didn't give us the breakfast coupon at checkin, so I had to go back down the prior afternoon. The restaurant was quite nice, and peaceful - you can look out at the rock garden (again, appears to be another element carried over from the days where it was the Hotel Nikko) They slipped the bill under the door in the morning and it had the "upgrade" that I did charged twice, only on the bill it was $40, not $50. Since I was up at 5am, I took it downstairs and got it taken care of - so the upgrade was $45 (incl. tax). No big deal, apparently they billed at the time of the upgrade and then someone doing daily billing did it again. Easy to take care of, but reinforces my motto when staying in hotels - always watch your credit card billing. ALWAYS. Room service was available, but we decided not to this time. There wasn't anything either of us were interested in - the menu a little bit on the limited side and definitely pricey, with a sandwhich that sounded decent running $13 - there were also some pricier items like Filet Mignon, which was $29. 19% $2.50 was also added to room service orders. If you walk down the street (Dearborn) there's a Sbarro's pizza, which is terrific - we ate there instead, and there's a White Hen Pantry across the street of Sbarros for snacks/drinks - definitely needed, given that room service soda was something like $3. The fitness room seemed more than adequately stocked, but I'd read that it cost $10 and really didn't have enough interest in working out to do that; seemed like too much to use the room, anyways. There are only 4 rooms per floor on the river side of the building. Given that there are a couple of floors with other things besides rooms, I would estimate that there are maybe 60 river rooms in the place. Out of the river rooms, there appear to be two smaller corner rooms on the sides, then the bigger rooms in the middle of the four. The river rooms, if the floors I were on are any indication, end in 24,25,26,27. 25 is the middle room looking West, 26 is the middle room looking East. So, overall, it was nice. The room offered a fantastic view - other hotels offer a river view, but there aren't any like that, where you feel like you're literally over the river - the other hotels have a street in-between the hotel and river. The staff/service was okay - not bad, but not fantastic, either. It was the same way at the Intercontinental in Chicago, while the *** Courtyard Marriott seemed eager to please. Overall, a very nice hotel, but the fact that I had a river room really was the big part of what made it an enjoyable experience. That, and the Westin Shower/Bed also certainly helped.
  7. I see a 4.5* in the downtown area on HW from 12/27-12/31 that is either the Monaco or the Burnham for $96 - both are very good hotels and that's a good deal. Will you get a better deal on priceline? Maybe, as I do get better deals on PL )I just got the Westin River North nearby for considerably more than half off on PL), but HOTWIRE is nice because you can generally tell what's what if you're familiar with the city's hotels. Those hotels (although I can't guarantee that's what they are, it's very likely it's either the Burnham/Monaco) would fit your bill nicely.
  8. The second hotel in this thread (w/the laundry) is maybe the Allerton on Michigan Ave?
  9. A super schweet deal, if I may say so myself - the hotel otherwise goes for $179 for that night. Lengthy bidding history: Was looking around for a while, and had the option of going for 9th, 10th or 11th (and maybe even the 12th). Went for **** on 3/10 River North for $62, and priceline said I could rebid if I wanted to add $17. Good deal - 'twas either the Westin, HOB or Renaissance - but something just didn't compel me to bite. Tried $69 for 3/11 and it bit. Good room for my birthday night! Hopefully I'll get a river view (but probably not).
  10. Bidding on the Chicago River North area is a pretty safe bet (at the very least, you'd get the Courtyard Marriott, Hilton Garden Inn or the Holiday Inn Merchandise Mart, which are all fine hotels - especially the Courtyard, which is a 2.5 star hotel on priceline, yet seemed like a 3.5 star to me.)
  11. Given the fact that it has Laundry, it is very likely the Holiday Inn Merchandise Mart, which is approximately 5 blocks W/SW of the Hilton Garden Inn.
  12. I'm guessing it could be the W in the downtown area.
  13. Actually, now that I look again, the PW is North of the downtown, not NW.
  14. According to the Park West website (I'm from Chicago, but never been to the PW), it's on the NW side of the city, not South of the city. There are definitely not many hotels at all in this area that I know of and the ones that I know of are pretty bare basics, aside from the Belden Stratford (and I don't think that one is on either Priceline or HW). If you would be bidding on PL, you would bid for Lincoln Park and on HW, you would try for Gold Coast/North Michigan Ave. Given where I see the Park West on the map, you could easily get a hotel on the North end of the Michigan Ave. area and take a brief cab ride to the Park West and back. If you need any help or have any questions, email me at [email protected]
  15. The hotel in question actually looks like the Holiday Inn Merchandise Mart. I just looked and the hotel in question has laundry, which I think the HI has and the Hilton does not.
  16. Really good hotel! Definitely exceeded my expectations - posted a review in the review forum.
  17. In an episode of "The Apprentice", the candidates were assigned the task of rehabing a hotel and opening it for guests. Everything else aside about the episode, there is a note made towards the end that "people remember the last thing about the experience", and the candidates made sure to thank guests and show concern for any problems they encountered. So it went with the end of my stay at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Chicago. When we were leaving in the morning, the attendant at the desk was very friendly, and made me feel appreciated. He asked if we needed a cab and when we did, he made sure someone went right out and got one for us. Check-out was less than a minute. Backing it all the way up to the beginning, I was fooling around on priceline.com a few days before going to this hotel and "stumbled" into getting this hotel for $47 for the night. Even though it was a great deal, I wasn't crazy about going to this hotel, as it *previously* was not too high on the list of hotels I'd want to stay at in Chicago. Not because it looked bad or anything, but simply because it appeared to be "just another hotel". Since I go to the occasional hotel just to get away, I usually look for hotels that offer something extra or are unique. So, we arrived at this hotel at approximately 3:40pm, and were allowed to check in early (check-in is 4). I had signed up for Marriott Rewards a couple days before coming, and gave it to the desk person (who was very satisfactory - certainly friendly, but not overly so). I knew that I wasn't going to get any points for the room, given that I got a heavily discounted rate. However, I thought that maybe this could get me a better room or maybe some other perks. This was a Thursday and, despite some shows and conventions in the city, the hotel seemed pretty empty. There were no lines at the front desk and I didn't see many people in the halls. However, this is apparently often a pretty busy hotel - I think we were just there at an off time. We were assigned room 1119, which provided a pretty magnificent view of Chicago's Merchandise Mart, which lights up in gorgeous fashion when the sun sets. Off to the side, we could also see Marina Tower and the House of Blues building. So far, I was very pleased, because I was not expecting a view, given this location. The rooms in this hotel start at the 6th floor, which is nice - no one is at practically ground level. Some of the rooms likely don't have views, but I'm guessing a fair amount of the rooms have a pretty good view of the Merchandise Mart and the other side has a view of the Wrigley Building and NBC tower. The room itself was nicely sized and furnished. The bathroom was certainly adequate and everything was in working order. The bed was huge (it seemed like it could easily fit 3-4 people) and there was also a couch and desk. The room wasn't huge, but even with all that was in there, there was still definitely a lot of room to move around. A few paintings (interesting work, too) were on the walls. There were no instances of stains or wear. Impressively enough, the room smelled really nice. This did not seem to be "spray" or "perfume", but the room just genuinely smelled fresh. The smell wasn't overwhelming or even that obvious - it just felt nice. The room had air conditioning and heat. The room offered a very nice flat-screen TV, with a solid selection of channels and pay-per-view (the pay-per-view had "Sideways", which was still in some theaters at the time of this review. There were also a lot of movies that were still 2-3 months away from being on DVD.) We soon ordered a Pizza Hut pizza from room service, and they were nice when they answered the phone. They said that the pizza would take 30-45 minutes, but it actually took 15-20. The person who brought it up was extremely nice. Nice enough that, despite the fact that a delivery charge was included in the pizza (I think $1-2, making it $13, which is still pretty reasonable for a good-sized pizza), I gave him a really good tip. What surprised me further about the hotel was the facilities. The swimming pool was very nice - not huge, but certainly mid-sized and appeared clean. There was also a hot tub, steam room and very nice exercise room. The exercise room seemed very up-to-date, with a lot of different equipment and a very nice setting, complete with televisions. There are a few elevators that are in very good condition, so I can't see there being much of a wait for elevators, even at the busiest times here. There was also a nice restaurant and breakfast area in the hotel. A gift shop with drinks, snacks and other necessities was just off to the side of the front desk. Food prices in room service and the restaurant (aside from the pizza, which was reasonable) seemed a tad high, but certainly fine - less than in other hotels I've been in. There was a USA today waiting at my door when I left in the morning. For those unfamiliar with the area, this hotel is in a particularly good location. It is 2-3 blocks East to the Michigan ave. shopping area. The House of Blues is about a block and a half away and the theater district is about a 5 minute walk. Essentially, this is a solid location that sits right between the Michigan Ave shopping area and the downtown "loop" section. Now we get to the bad parts, and I think most will agree that these are pretty/fairly minor: * Minimal toiletries. There were a couple of soaps and one bottle of shampoo. * Vending machines empty. There are soda machines and ice machines on each floor. On my floor, there was only one selection left (tea) and on another floor I went to, the machine was sold out. * Dry. As with all hotels, the room was very dry (I actually had a meter with me and humidity was less than 20% in the room). Still, it's like this with every hotel. * A little bit of noise. There was some minor noise from the street below (it's a busy street - State St. - so a bit of minor noise is more than acceptable) I also heard some water pipe noise in the morning, but again, nothing major. Overall, I was very surprised that this is a ** 1/2 star hotel on Priceline.com. It is a *** hotel on other hotel sites (and I'm almost positive it is *** officially.) Honestly, even a *** rating for the hotel seems rather low. I would say I would think it could make it to *** 1/2, but not ****. I liked this hotel a lot and it was really a pleasant surprise. I've stayed in **** hotels in the area before and felt like I was paying for luxury that didn't add to the experience. Here, I felt as if I was paying for what I should be paying for: very good service, a clean and well-run hotel and a solid selection of facilities. I've read a lot of reviews online that are VERY positive about this hotel, and I would have to add myself to that list. I think this hotel needs to somehow put itself out there more. It's got everything going for it - a great location, a really solid staff and a good selection of facilities. This hotel should be advertised more by Marriott, and the page for this hotel on the Marriott website should be less of a "standard page" and focus a bit more on the staff and maybe offer comments from previous visitors. For those visiting this hotel, be sure to sign up for the Rewards program at marriott.com before visiting. It's free. This is definitely a "sleeper" hotel more people should know about. (also posted on epinions.com)
  18. I'm guessing it is very likely the Tremont. Good location, but a basic hotel that gets mediocre reviews.
  19. I had previously bid on priceline and happily ended up with the Marriott Residence Inn over by Water Tower for $54. I've also gotten the Intercontinental on HW for $69. My fiance and I live in Chicago and occasionally, we like a cheap hotel night. This week, I was planning on maybe doing something on HW later in the week if I saw something and felt like it. Was sitting with my finance, and she enjoys the rush of Priceline, so as a goof, I put in a bid of $40 for River North. I did not want to try NMA, because I did not want the Hyatt. I didn't want to be one person in a monster huge hotel and I've read some remarkably negative reviews (there's one review on Trip Advisor where the Hyatt apparently told someone to head West from O'Hare to reach the hotel). Anyways, didn't get anything in RivNo for $40. Tried again w/NMA and RiverNo 2.5/3 at $47 and ended up with the Courtyard. Totally couldn't believe it when it showed up, as I entirely wasn't expecting to get anything. Really no bidding strategies involved here, simply stumbled into it and I'm happy with the result - good location and almost 1/3rd of the $129 price the hotel is going for on this particular day.
