  1. I'm wondering the same thing. I checked LAX rates after someone on this list posted higher prices there for this August. I found the rates given to be a fair amount higher than I've seen for LAX. I'm bidding for LIH several months away and haven't had success yet...but it's early yet for that. They keep offering the great deal of $35. a day for a mid size...That's almost $600. for 2 weeks. :-(
  2. Personally, I don't think this is early to bid for August. Go for it now....start low for a few days.
  3. A few years ago we rented a midsize and got a Toyota Corolla in Florida. I think it is rare to get a Corolla or Camry from a rental agency....in my experience anyway.
  4. I would use the $3 if I were you. I did have a $4. coupon a couple years ago, but haven't seen it since.
  5. Decided to update my post from our rental first week of Dec/2011, but didn't see it. Thought the info might be helpful, so here goes. We bid on a midsize car, was accepted by Alamo @$10 per day plus fees. At Alamo we used to go up to the desk....and the clerk would handle it. This time, they announced that those with "priceline" and "hotwire" bids to go over to a small kiosk like area with 2 computer terminals for us to enter our info into. Someone was there to assist. It took a bit longer, but was fine. When we got outside to pick out a car, there were NO more midsized cars. They immediately offered one full sized car that was left, but we didn't want it. Then the girl (from Alamo) said, "Well, do you want this one?" pointing to a convertible. Surprised, I asked her "Are you offering me the convertible?" She said, "Well, yes, if that's what you want." I think she thought we were just being difficult, trying to get a better car. We really wanted the midsized car that we bid on. So, I asked her "How long would we have to wait for a midsize?" She said "About 15 minutes." Then I think she went over and got one for us, and we were out without much more delay. (I could see lines of cars being returned.) In HI, space is at a premium and parking spaces are small. So you may not want to consider that when choosing a size. Another thing is that even the smaller cars have a lot of "get up and go" because the cars in HI DO NOT have all the extra polution controls, or whatever, on them that slow down the 4 cylinder cars on the mainland. That's about it. Hope you enjoy Kauai if that's where you are going! :)
  6. Contrats on your bid acceptance. I don't think Enterprise is in LIH.
  7. You didn't mention which airport. We had a good experience using PRICELINE. I posted details of our experience back in December, 2009. I do recommend using PRICELINE through this site. Shirley
  8. Are you going to the Big Island...the Island of Hawaii, in the state of Hawaii? Or maybe the island of Oahu...where Honolulu is? I would suggest you start out bidding even lower. You have time to experiment a little. September is not the "high season" in Hawaii....so there may be some deals. High season in HI starts about December 15....and goes through the winter. If you can get a decent price from the car companies....which can be cancelled....you might make one as a back up. Then try bidding through this site. If you look back on the discussion on this list, you can see that good deals can be had. We got ours early last December...through this site...$8 a day for a midsize on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Best wishes to you. Shirley
  9. I haven't figured out any system for the way it works. Hope someone can help with it. My thoughts are to keep bidding low...for different sized cars. Try bidding low on a larger car....maybe they have a surplus of them. Another possibility is to fly into Tampa (not far from Orlando) and rent a car there. We did that once to get a cheaper car rental. I've not gone to MCO in the summer....probably pretty busy season. Hope you can find a good deal.
  10. I'll mention some possibilities that come to mind. There may be a large convention (or the like) causing a shortage. MCO is a family destination with 'most' ? requesting a SUV, causing a shortage. Try bidding lower on another type vehicle if it would suit you. Another possibility that we have done is to fly into Tampa (not far away) and rent there. I just responded to an e=mail from carrentals.com, typed in your travel dates, and got the following (I tried cutting and pasting...so the format is not good). But these rates are showing better rates. If these rates are available, then you SHOULD be able to get a BETTER rate at Priceline. My limited experience with Priceline....is limited to one rental for $11 a day for a midsize in Hawaii. I suggest you keep trying (I would go much lower although it makes no sense). Hope this gives you some ideas. If I were you, I'd have a reservation (that you don't have to prepay) held...just in case. 11. Keep trying. Every day or so...however often they let you rebid. I would try even lower (personally). Change the type of car....for example if everyone is trying to get the best rate and bid on an economy, sometimes they have more midsized on hand....or any number of possibilities. Read some examples of the good deals that are possible on this forum....try bidding at different hours of the day. We got an $11 day rate on a midsized in LIH in early December when the advertized rates were similar to what you are seeing. I should qualify my remarks and say that I've only tried/won the 1 bid on priceline. Hope it works for you.
  12. If they accepted your bid, you have likely already paid and have the rental. Are you just amazed at the good rate? I have only bid once through this 'better bidding' through Priceline. It was exactly as quoted in the e-mail they sent me after the bid. ($11 a day for a week in Kauai, HI for a midsized car...plus taxes.) The only 'extra' you might expect is for them to give you a hard sell to get extra insurance. After our vacation, I posted a note on this board about our experiences with it. If you are interested....I posted it in Dec. 09.
  13. Just wanted to report that we had a good experience renting the car in Kauai. At the counter of Alamo, I gave the clerk my information....She announced aloud "got a midsize in the $70's, what should I give them?" Someone tossed her a set of keys and said "the Hundai." After trying to sell me insurance, she handed me the keys. We went out to the lot and found a nearly brand new Hundai Elantra, navy blue, with 3770 miles on it. It was a fine car for us.... had a large trunk that held ALL our luggage and got really good gas mileage. Our rental fee for 7 days was $77 plus taxes. Don't know if she was trying to embarrass us, but I actually was quite proud of the good deal we were getting. We have rented directly from that Alamo location in Kauai 4 times before. Always before, they tell you to go out on the lot and pick out a mid-size from any on the lot...keys are in it. We were pleased with the car, the service from Alamo, and the price we paid for it. Dates of travel: Dec. 2-9, 2009
  14. SXOT: I just got an e-mail from hotwire.com about car rentals 10.95 day. (Mid-sized, I think). When I went to their site it was $12.95....in this case the second week of December. I switched the dates to the ones you were asking about and got $56. per day. I also got an e-mail today from Alamo about last minute deals. Like what was mentioned before....the high season in Hawaii starts Dec. 15. You might make a reservation (without pre-paying) with the best deal you can find....then keep on bidding with priceline thru betterbidding. When I got my deal of $11 (mid-size) per day ....the rates were $500.+ for a week. I would encourage you to keep bidding....regularly. It may still be possible to get a good deal during the holiday season..... Hope it goes well for you. :) We are sure getting excited about our upcoming trip. Kauai....Hanalei Bay is our favorite vacation spot.
  15. Glad you got a good rate. My personal opinion is that car rental fees are higher this fall/winter than they've been in recent years. Sometimes one can get a better rate on a mid or full size car than an economy or compact.....when they have more of the larger cars on the lot. Hope you enjoy your time in Maui. It is beautiful. :)
  16. I'm SO glad you got a bid for $11. I'm the person who had the previous $11 winning priceline bid....and I was beginning to think that no one would believe me. :) Hope you enjoy your vacation in Kauai. It's our favorite place to go.
  17. You can find out what the fees are for the rental at the HOTWIRE site. It should be on the page 1st page that gives the price or maybe one step further. Keep watching...daily. The rates seem to vary a lot. Put in bids to PRICELINE at rates you would be willing to pay. You bid on the daily rate.....but Priceline gives you the total price before you place the bid. If you see HOTWIRE's price dropping a little....that may be a good time to bid. Does Disney provide rides to and from the airport? 12 days seems like a long time to spend at Disney, but I'm sure some would disagree with that. Eating all meals at Disney would off set the cost of renting a car for me. Sea World and Universal studios are only some of the many things to do in Orlando. I enjoyed the outlet mall in Orlando. If you have a car, you could drive over to the beach to spend the day....gulf or Atlantic. Well I've probably said too much.....try bidding though because you might get a really good deal.
  18. I believe compact and midsize both have 3 seat belts in the back....all would have at least two, I'm sure. Keep trying...rates sure do vary. Last week hotwire was showing in the teens 18.95...19.94 ...this week they are in the mid 20's. Hope it works well for you.
  19. Try bidding today....I just got $11 day for a midsize.
  20. Finally got a bid accepted. Had been trying for several days at $10, $11, $12 for a mid or full size car. I accessed Priceline through this "betterbidding.com" website. Mid-size car from Alamo $11 per day for 7 days Total price with taxes and fees is $131.09. Rental is for a week in December, 2009 We were glad to get Alamo. We've rented from them several times before, but always dealt directly with them. I would watch prices and then call them to match....and we usually got one for around $160 or so total price. NOT SO this year!! Their website was still showing (this morning) $400--$550 to rent a similar car. I'm really glad we bid for the car because this is the best deal we've ever had on a rental. Now I can't wait to spend another great week on Hanalei Bay in Kauai. Hope this encourages someone!!
