  1. Needed a hotel close to UC Davis to attend Picnic Day. Started bidding Vacaville 2.5 stars: 1st bid: Vacaville 2.5 stars - $45 <rejected> 2nd bid: Added Dixon zone - $47 <rejected> 3rd bid: Added Davis zone - $50 <rejected> I didn't want to bid more than $50, so I chose to bid 2 stars: 1st bid Vacaville 2 stars - $38 <ACCEPTED> Extended Stay America Suites Vacaville website - $105.00 ESA Suites is 20 minutes from UC Davis. Subtotal: $38.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $12.08 Total: $50.08
  2. Just returned from our stay Apr 7-9. I faxed my request for a non-smoking/2 bed room the day of my arrival. We checked in late (~9:30pm) and received our requested n-s/2b room on the 6th floor. The elevators are quick & efficient. Plenty of Valet & bellmen to assist you w/ your luggage. Room is very large & updated (no fridge, though). The hallways have the "new-carpet" smell. The 2 double-beds were comfortable each w/ 4 down pillows & a down comforter encased in two sheets. The bathroom was clean, stocked w/ Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, plenty of thick towels. Shower could use more pressure, but adequate. Sometimes water temperature changed while showering, but did not get scalded. Self-park is $12.00/day. You can park at Fry's Electronics Store lot (2 long blocks away on same street) or across very busy Canoga Ave. at Circuit City parking lot. This is not convenient & even though the neighborhood is safe, we did not feel comfortable doing this to save $12. Ate at the hotel buffet breakfast downstairs; not worth $11/adult + $5/child as the selection was limited & pastries, french toast were stale. Cheesecake Factory restaurant is next door to hotel; plenty of other restaurants, Target, Ralphs grocery store on Ventura Blvd. (other side of 101 freeway). Only 20 mins. to Universal Studios & 30 mins. to downtown LA. Would stay here again as a base for visiting LA again.
  3. Needed a hotel for my visit to Universal Studios. Didn't want to bid Burbank/Universal City/Glendale zone as this zone is too large & probably more expensive. I figured the surrounding suburb cities would be close enough (by car) & probably come up less expensive. Started bidding (4/6) in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley-Studio City) @ 2.5 stars. I was hoping to get the Courtyard Studio City. 1st bid: $50 2.5 stars Studio City zone <rejected> 2nd bid: $55 added 3 stars Burbank zone <rejected> 3rd bid: $58 added 3 stars Simi Valley zone <rejected> 4th bid: $62 added 3 stars Van Nuys zone <rejected> Note: Burbank, Simi Valley, & Van Nuys all did not have 2.5 stars available in their zones. Started bidding in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley-Woodland Hills) @ 3 stars. 1st bid: $50 3 stars Warner Center/Woodland Hills zone <rejected, but PL countered w/ $14 re-bid> 2nd bid: $55 added 3 stars Burbank zone ACCEPTED! 2 nights @ $55.00 = $110.00 Taxes & Fees: $22.47 Total: $132.47 Very :) to get 3 stars for $55 in Woodland Hills zone; when rejected at $62 for 2.5 stars in Studio City zone.
  4. Stayed here on Feb 17-18 (2 nights) to attend a wedding in Folsom (about 5 minutes north on I-50 from Rancho Cordova). The hotel is right off the freeway & is easy to get to Sacramento (about 20 minutes south on I-50). We checked-in late (around 10pm); front desk was quick & efficient. The room size was adequate (we asked for 2 double beds), beds were comfortable. The sink outside of the bathroom is annoying as it disturbs one person sleeping while the other is using the sink/lights on. No counter space. Bathroom (shower/tub + toilet) is small but serviceable, good shower pressure, clean, & thick towels. Included continental breakfast in lobby was good (toast, muffins, bagels, fruit, cereal, coffee, tea, OJ), plenty of tables & staff always ready to replenish food & clean tables. Parking & high-speed Internet access are free. Plenty of restaurants in nearby Folsom, also close to Folsom Outlet Mall. Overall, a clean comfortable place to sleep & shower; a good deal for $38/night on Hotwire.
  5. Add this 3* Holiday Inn to Sacramento area (Rancho Cordova-Folsom zone) to the Hotwire hotel list. Was listed as a Customer Favorite w/ the following amenities: Restaurant, Complimentary Breakfast (continental), Swimming Pool, Fitness Center, Hi-speed Internet, Laundry Facilities Got for $38/night on Hotwire. Checked Orbitz & direct Holiday Inn website: listed $71.20/night.
  6. Stayed here Aug 11-17, 2005 (PL=$80/night). Checked in early (10am), assigned a 2 double-bed room on 5th floor facing atrium. Positives - location, walkable to many tourist attractions, restaurants, stores - Metro Center station located in basement of hotel (no need to exit onto street level) - excellent service (staff friendly & hard-working) - clean, spacious, all rooms are smoke free, large fluffy towels, 4 down pillows/bed, great shower pressure w/ pulse feature, good air conditioner for hot & humid DC summer - Zephyr deli (lobby) reasonable prices for quick breakfast or lunch - quick & efficient elevators (no waiting, no crowds) Negatives - construction in surrounding neighborhood, dusty, blocked sidewalks - soft beds (can feel the springs), no down blankets - avoid atrium room (the noise from the piano & loud guests echos up through lobby ceiling) This was a bit irritating, but we were so tired that we fell asleep quickly. No need for a car. Easily took the Washington Flyer ($14 round trip) from Dulles to W. Falls Church metro station and rode the Orange line directly to Metro Center station (hotel basement). If staying 1 week, recommend buying 7 day Metro pass ($22.00) which allows you to ride as much as you want (good for exploring). The base Metro price to most tourist attractions is $1.35 (one way). Taking the Metro is quick, easy, and saves your feet from all the walking. Still bring a good pair of walking shoes. The Grand Hyatt is an excellent hotel and I would love to stay here again.
  7. Stayed 3 nights (July 1-3, 2005), 4th of July holiday weekend on PL @ $52/night. Hotel was fully booked, a conference was going on. Called hotel 3 days prior to confirm my res. and to request non-smoking, 2-bed room. At check-in, desk clerk mentioned room was pre-paid thru PL. Since hotel was full this weekend, we were given a non-smoking "Priceline" King room on the 2nd floor. This room was above the lobby (noisy) and only had half windows that could not be opened. Bedspread was old and carpet stained. Called down to front desk and asked for a room on a higher floor. Was then given a King room on the 6th floor which was updated. We used a roll-away bed for our child, which made the room a bit cramped. This room has a balcony (overlooking the parking lot) and has the down comforter & pillows, firmer bed. Much better than the previous room, which had the velux blanket, old pillows, sagging bed. IMHO, since the hotel was sold-out, we were given the least desirable/not updated "Priceline" room. So don't be afraid to ask for a better room. Luckily, we checked-in at around 4pm, if it had been later in the day, we might have been stuck w/ the "PL" room. Good location right off of 405/55 freeway, easy drive to Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Irvine. Did not eat at hotel restaurants; did not use room service--too expensive. Would rather explore the many near-by restaurants. Starbucks located in lobby. McDonald's across the street. Huge SouthCoast shopping Plaza down the street. Mitsuwa Japanese market w/ food court directly across from hotel. Ate dinner at a delightful family style Japanese restaurant (Corokke) next to 7-11 across from hotel. Only a few tables & family run, we were the only non-Japanese customers, so we knew this is a local favorite. Great food & good prices. :) The bad: self-parking is $13/night. Didn't try parking at next door businesses as they were clearly marked "not for hotel parking". There were 4 elevators, but ran inefficiently (slow) and always full (had to wait alot). W/ a full hotel, air conditioning didn't work inside the elevators or waiting areas. Wanted to use the stairs, but the stairs are used only for emergency exits. The spa (next to pool) has no jets, just minimally bubbling water. Hi-speed access is $9.95/day. OK fitness room (some machines weren't working). :) The good: non-PL room was clean, comfortable bed, efficient maid service, OK shower pressure, thick towels, Neutrogena soap/shampoo, quiet air conditioner, large swimming pool, convenient location, friendly, hard-working staff. For $52/night, would stay here again, but ask for an updated room on an upper floor.
