  1. Got the downtown Renaissance Hotel on Wed. 8/28 for $157, but additional night(s) was refused at that price. I guess it's because it's Labor Day weekend. Prices for the weekend are very high.
  2. Bid regularly for a week for either a resort or 4* hotel in Wailea/Makena area of South Maui. Stopped bidding at resort when unsuccessful at $215/nt. Finally got accepted at $185/nt. for two rooms at Makena Golf Resort (formerly the Maui Prince Hotel). Have stayed there many times before. It's on a great beach, and even though it's a little older than the Wailea resorts, it's very clean and quiet with good service, and better, cheaper parking and resort fees. It appears that Maui tourism is really ramping up again, and the days of $100/nt. successful bids at the Marriott are a thing of the past. Condo rates are going up, too, in the Kihei area. So are airfares. Aloha.
  3. I just started bidding on a *resort* at the Wailea/Makena area on Maui. I've been unsuccessful so far up to $175. I don't see any successful bids for that on the calendar of wins. Has anybody had a successful bid for that area? Or, have the resorts stopped offering their rooms for priceline? I will try more bidding when I'm allowed. The best hotel price for my desired hotel, the Marriott Wailea, is $262 for seniors. Mahalo.
  4. If it were on Priceline, I'm pretty sure that it would be the Makena Golf Resort, which is south of the Wailea hotels. It is somewhat older and does not have a fancy pool area like the Wailea hotels (Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, Fairmont, Marriott), but it is right on a great, quiet beach. It is a reasonably priced alternative to the others, and it is a little farther drive if you're sightseeing. On the other hand, it's very close to the several golf courses in Wailea and Makena. There are a number of good restaurants nearby, too, including my favorite, "Gannon's". Good luck.
  5. Has anyone had any success in bidding or know of any deals on Swiss hotels? Particularly Geneva? The rack rates are very, very expensive- even on most conventional booking sites.
  6. Been to Maui many times. Don't know what your interests are, but Maui can be pricey. Try to stay at a hotel on the beach in Wailea or Kaanapali. Go to Hana. If you don't like driving winding roads, take a tour. See Haleakala (the volcano crater)- preferably at sunrise. Check out 'happy hours' at sunsets at hotels and restaurants. Go parasailing or jet skiing. Take a snorkel trip to Molokini. If you like magicians with a comic flair, go see 'Warren and Annabelle' in Laheina. Visit the aquarium. None of these are inexpensive. If you need a car rental, I do recommend PRICELINE. Start low. Sometimes they have terrific deals if business is slow. Have a great time, Aloha.
  7. Stayed here for a couple of nights 8/9/11-8/11/11. We had been vacationing in Maine for a week. Dropped my wife and 11 y.o. grandson off at the hotel and took the rental car back at Gov. Ctr. Rode the 'T' back to hotel, called wife to see if she got checked in ok. She gave me a room number, and she said that they had a surprise. Evidently, the registration clerk took a liking to my grandson (he is a charmer), and we were upgraded to a corner junior suite on 29th floor with great views of the city and the bay. Since I got the room for $150/nt. on Priceline, I was very impressed. I am a Starwood Preferred member, and that might have had something to do with it. Walked around looking for a place for dinner, and we happened on a fun restaurant, "Fire and Ice". It's an updated version of a mongolian bbq where you pick from lots of food choices, and then they cook it on a huge circular grill. All you can eat really enticed my grandson. Fortunately, we got there a little before the big crowd. Very fun place to take an energetic, hungry, young boy. We also took a fun evening tour, "Graveyards and Ghosts" next to the aquarium on our last night. Our "host", Mercy, kept us in stitches with her sketches about the ghosts and other horror stories of Boston. Grandson loved it. I might add that since this is our 7th or 8th trip to Boston (our daughter went to school there), we native Californians would like to compliment Bostonians on their hospitality, warmth, and helpfulness. I've visited many major cities of this country and the world. I give Boston the highest marks for being 'visitor friendly'. Plus, the food's great.
  8. Stayed a couple of nights with our grandson here because of its proximity to the airport. Hopped on the Silver Line from Logan, got off at Tradecenter, a short stroll to hotel. Nice price on the kids' breakfast buffet as my 11 y.o. eats like a horse. The Irish pub in the hotel suited us for the first evening for dinner. Very nice hotel, especially for the Priceline rate of $141/nt. at the beginning of August. Would stay here again.
  9. Anybody have any experience bidding on airfare from Maui to Los Angeles over the Christmas holiday? Want to bring kids and grandkids over.
  10. Bid/won std. car from Alamo 9/22/ to 10/3 OGG airport for $14/day (plus fees and taxes- which are almost as much as the car rental). Had good experience with Alamo here in Maui before.
  11. Won bid for two nights at Morgan Run Resort on north coastal for Del Mar at $85 for two nights 8/27. It's supposedly a 3*, but it wasn't listed on Priceline's hotel list. I've driven by it on occasion, but never stayed there. Anyone got any info? I guess I could take my golf clubs with me, but I'm mainly there for the horse racing weekend.
  12. Didn't have any luck bidding on resorts for 9/22 to 9/26 in Kihei/Wailea area, so I changed to 3.5* and won bid for three nights at Makena Resort. Stayed there many times before, and it is very quiet and relaxing, and on a great beach. Wanted to extend for one additional night, but I was refused. I have noticed that Priceline successful bidding recently has refused the extra nights on check-in or check-out. Happened to me once before. Very happy with the Makena resort, though.
  13. Couldn't get any bids accepted for waterfront aquarium district, so I switched to Copley and won 4* Westin at $169. Very competitive bidding for this date, must be conventions in town.
  14. 4* at Logan will likely either be the Hyatt or the Hilton. Either one will suit your purpose and save taxi, bus, or water taxi ride to waterfront. I've stayed at both via Priceline. Lowest price I remember was $90 for the Hyatt. Good luck.
  15. Would prefer to have the single hotel so as not to check out and in of different hotels. Might interfere with sightseeing with our grandson. Will try again.
  16. Really wanted the Marriott Long Wharf for two nights, 8/9 and 8/10. Worked my way up and split the nights (which usually works). Got 8/10 for $161, but adding extra night before at same price was refused. I'll try again for 8/9 after 24 hours. I've noticed that changing the dates of checking in or checking out is not as automatic as it used to be. I just hate the risk of getting another hotel that might suddenly be added to the bidding pool.
  17. Second bid got me the Westin waterfront in Boston, which I like because it's close to either the silver line bus or the water taxi from Logan airport
  18. Again, very helpful info. I will report whatever outcome I get. I've got time until June. Any cooking fans out there, we attend a cooking class in Napa for a day while we're there- see 'cookingwithjulie.com'. It's a full day at farmers mkt. in St. Helena, a fine vineyard, and very constructive cooking instruction to go with some fine dining. This will be our fourth class, and we've met some very interesting people as classmates, including a former ten year NBA star and his lovely wife. Worth every penny. If anyone signs up, tell Julie that 'Chuck' sent you (inside joke).
  19. I'm in complete agreement with Priceline's map boundaries in many cities. Usually they narrow them down in the 'name your own price' areas, but not always. I've had the same problem with airport areas when I travel. Sometimes when I fly that involves a a connecting flight, I like to stop either way in a city to break up the trip or even visit a new place. I love to visit major league baseball parks and museums, for example. If I stay near the airport, I can rent a car and drive where I want to go. If Priceline deposits me 20-30 miles from the airport, I spend most of my time in commuting, and taxi trips usually exceed the price of a car rental.
  20. I'm curious if anyone has won a Priceline bid for the Silverado Resort in Napa, CA. It's listed as a 4*, but it's price is cheaper than 3* or 3.5* hotels in Napa (Napa central). I would appreciate info to see if it's a genuine 4*, because with Priceline's bidding rules, I might get that hotel even if I bid for a lower star rating. Was hoping for Vino Bello or River Terrace Inn.
  21. Sounds like the one, although I got a different price when I tried it earlier. I think the price difference is because the weekend rates in Napa (6/8 - 6/12) are higher across the board. Just checked the 3.5* and it was $124. Know anything about the Silverado Resort? I'm sure that even if I bid on Priceline for a 3*, 3.5*, or 4*, that would be the winner.
  22. Now, $124/nt. Complimentary breakfast included, at least one pool, and internet access available. Please help on this one, it's driving me nuts. Best guess on my part is Best Western Ivy. Whaddya think?
