  1. Thank you for posting the response from PRICELINE. I had used HOTWIRE for one way rentals on two occasions, never a drop off charge, my rate is what I paid. You will be asked to pay for an upgrade, better insurance, for the fueling option, and for a gps rental. No, no, and heck no. good luck and please post your results.
  2. A very nice win indeed and it is great to see your bid history as well. If you are inclined to visit the beach, check out Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. They have restroom facilities, outdoor showers, a snack bar, and great sunsets all for a small admission fee. Beach chair and umbrella rental is a bit pricey at $30, but you might be able to sit under a tree. If you are partial to oysters, check out Turtle Krawls or the Raw Bar at happy hour for $.50 raw oysters. Key West is pretty great.
  3. I was confident that I would get this property, the rack rate was $80, and there were not many hotels in this area. Offer Price: $52.00 Taxes & Fees: $12.44 Total: $64.44 Overall, the hotel was decent and I would stay there again when back in Union.
  4. Won on my first bid, Hotwire rates were about $10 more, I may have started my bidding a little high. Ended up with a Ford Focus, an economical ride. I also ended up buying the optional fixed price fuel option which ended up costing me $41 as I used less than half tank of fuel. I misunderstood the entire concept of a fixed price as I thought the cost per gallon was set.....just top off the fuel and I get charged $3.40 per gallon. You always pay for an education in some form or another.
  5. I believe there is a bus that runs along Sherbrooke St. Parking can be a bit of a problem in this area, you may need a residential permit to park on some of the streets during the day. Edit to add: looks like you are close to the metro station Place-des- Arts or the one for McGill University.
  6. I saw that another board member had won this property with a $47 bid. I opened bidding at $37 plus $10 bonus cash, but was rejected. I dropped to the 2.5* level and bid $42 plus $10 bonus cash, success. Bonus Cash: $10.00 Offer Price: $42.00 Taxes & Fees: $14.98 Total: $56.98 Used the PRICELINE links on the board to make my bids
  7. I believe the reason for "horrible" reviews is because of inexperience with the bidding process and the inability to cancel reservations once a bid is accepted. I have made hundreds of reservations with PRICELINE and as a result, have saved over 50% compared to conventional reservations. Its all about managing your expectations.....you plans must be firm (hence, I bid on the day of travel or maybe just the day before), you have to accept any hotel within the zone of your choice, you have to trust the star ratings PRICELINE assigns to each property, you can be upgraded to a higher rated property ( your chosen star rating is the minimum you will get). There can be additional charges for parking or a resort fee. That said, these trade offs can result in a great savings and allow you to stay in higher rated accommodations for the price of a Motel 6. In my personal experience, I have been put into a smoking room a few times, had to pay for parking, was upgraded to a 3* when I really wanted a 2.5* (and a better chance of getting free breakfast and free wifi), was assigned to a "PRICELINE" room with a one bed next to the elevator, and was given poor customer service by a snotty clerk on a power trip. However, these experiences are a slim minority.
  8. Yes, the Route 320 bus which stops behind the Hyatt Place will take you to the Port Authority in about 25 minutes, but you should board the bus before 9:30 am. At 10:00 am, the "bus only" lanes through the tunnel are open to all traffic and turns into a long ride. This bus stop has a new Ticket vending machine that accepts cash, credit cards, and debit cards for bus fare.
  9. The direct booking rate with taxes would be $744, so you saved $73 using PRICELINE. You should call and ask (politely) if you can get a king with a microwave and refrigerator. On the day of arrival, you should also call the desk and ask for your room preference. Room assignments are typically made on the day of check in, so the hotel will not commit today for a reservation 6 weeks away. I have stayed here several times and the staff has been decent. The clerk is a gatekeeper and can often help get what you want.
  10. Fleet week is an annual event during this week, more information: http://www.fleetweeknewyork.com/
  11. Welcome to BetterBidding! From Our Rules and Policies: Please post the details of your win to the board, including star rating, city, zone, hotel name, room rate per nite, dates of your stay and the amenities shown before your purchase... you can still view all of this information by going to PRICELINE and clicking the MY PROFILE, MY TRIPS AND REQUESTS link near the top right of their home page. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
  12. Did you factor in a $24.99 resort fee at the Red Rock? With tax, it is more like $28. Amazingly, Red Rock does not even put the cost of it's fee on the website. How cowardly!
  13. Can you also confirm your dates of travel? Is this a one or two night stay?
  14. I'm not sure if you stayed here recently, but the rooms have all been refurbished, you may also get a free breakfast if you show a priority club card. A nice win, though.
  15. If you are looking for cheap(er) eats while staying at the Fountainbleau, there is a Carabbas about 6 blocks away at the Marriott Courtyard. Across Collins Ave from the Courtyard is a bodega that sells sandwiches, beer and coffee. They actually make a decent rendition of the Philly Cheesesteak and a good Cuban sandwich.
  16. johndeere, I recently completed two rental reservations on HOTWIRE and received cars from Budget and Avis. Both rentals were about $40 less compared to making a reservation directly with the respective companies, and on each occasion it worked out fine. You will still be pressured into paying for an upgrade and taking out insurance, but tell the agent no thanks. PS, I have used HOTWIRE rates as a benchmark to start my PRICELINE bids, you can often undercut the HOTWIRE price by a few dollars. Good luck and please report back your success.
  17. Congratulations, this is a great property with a nice outdoor pool, free parking, free breakfast, free wifi. It is one of the closest hotels to Atlantic City on the White Horse Pike in Absecon. The $5 insurance fee is not mandatory, did you inadvertantly check off the box (as I did once)? $129 x .45 = $58.05 so you saved 55% before fees and taxes. Rack rate guests will pay about 14% in taxes on top of the $129 rate, so the walk out price is around $147. Tell your friend you saved $70 and they will think you're a genius. PS, PRICELINE's minimum sleeping accommodation is a room with a double bed, so if you need something else, call the hotel and ask them nicely if you can get what you prefer. If your travels take you to Atlantic City, check out the White House Sub Shop, I drove 12 miles out of my way and back to get a White House Special yesterday, it was worth it. It might be a little cool for the beach, but I have used the beach about two blocks north of the Ventnor border, there is decent street parking and no beach tags are needed.
  18. The highest star rating in Bedford is 4* on PRICELINE's "Name Your Own Price" product, so unless there is another 4* hotel, you should have a good shot. Also, your stay is a Sunday night which typically has the lowest occupancy levels.
  19. Bid $46 plus $5 in bonus cash, received the 2* Travelodge. This is an older two story property with "park in front of your room" outside entrances, I was surprised that this was rated 2* as I usually see these types of hotels as 1*. I went back to PRICELINE's shop and compare site and saw that this property was available for $44.99. I contacted customer service and asked to submit a best price guarantee claim, and after waiting a few minutes I received a refund of $31.01 which was the difference of $6.01 overbid plus $25 as well as a $50 PRICELINE vacation certificate, which is pretty much worthless. Overall I was pleased with the result. The hotel is being refurbished with new bedding, carpeting and furniture, but the bathroom is dated, but my room was clean. Breakfast and wifi are free. Looks like a decent location for exploring Newport and I imagine this place will be packed in the summer. Bonus Cash: $5.00 Offer Price: $46.00 Room Subtotal: $46.00 Taxes & Fees: $14.29 Total: $60.29
  20. Used BiddingHelper.com.com to check prices, it appeared that HOTWIRE had a 3* for $61, I thought this might be the Holiday Inn Express. I started a bid at the 3* level at $56 but received a counteroffer at $69. I immediately went down a half star and bid $55, success. Offer Price: $55.00 Taxes & Fees: $12.92 Total: $67.92 PRICELINE's "shop and compare" rate was $90, so I'm pleased with the win. This hotel features free breakfast and wifi, which are both welcomed.
  21. Welcome! Please reply with the dates of travel and the amenities that are shown with this listing. Also, please click this HOTWIRE link before your reply.
  22. Speaking of amenities, can you please post the amenities (and star rating) for your previous Hotwire Destin topic? You can still view this information in the MY ACCOUNT section on the top right of HOTWIRE's home page. Feel free to post more of your HOTWIRE wins these keep the board current.
  23. While in Groton, stop at the Submarine museum, it is free, but donations are requested as it is operated by a non profit organization. You can board a de-commissioned submarine.
  24. It has been awhile, but a few years ago I had dim sum at the Triple 8 Palace at 88 Broadway. This is a huge restaurant and servers push carts laden with a variety of dim sum, you see something you like, get it and the server marks your check, at the end of the meal, the waiter tallies up all your plates and presents a bill. As for a little Italy, you could always stop at Lombardi's which is supposed to be the first pizzeria in the US. Good to say you've been there, but there is better pie elsewhere. Near Macy's and Herald Square is Koreatown, and you could have Korean BBQ. You can cook your dinner on a gas or charcoal grill in the middle of your table. I will also second thereuare's recommendation for Jackson Hole, great burgers. As for parking, you can go online and see if there are any lots nearby that have cheaper parking. Edison operates many lots and parking decks in NYC and they have a good website, just make sure the lot offers 24 hour parking. The only downside to using an offsite lot is you don't have in and out privileges like at a hotel.
