  1. Ughh...never have I had to pay so much for a 4* in NYC as this week. I used all the bidding techniques starting two weeks ago, so I was clearly cutting it a bit tight. All to no avail. I tried every trick in the travel book I know (PRICELINE, HOTWIRE, hotels, lastminute, Orbitz, Expedia, my AmEx rep), including a possible discounted rate at the new Kimpton Eventi which had an opening rate of $339/night, but was sold out. And, it's further south than I ideally wanted to be. Not sure what's going on, but every hotel is maxing out their rates for this week....2* - 4*. I have to be in NYC for the launch of a friends technology company, and some business meetings, so not being in NYC wasn't an option, and I wasn't willing to commute from across the river. I used the PRICELINE links (PRICELINE) for this board, so hope that helps. One great benefit is that at least I'm in mid-town and close to all my meetings. Still, saved $160 off the website rate, so that's a positive. Thanks NYC, I guess it's my turn to help out the local economy and to make up for that $105/night at the Grand Hyatt back in January :-). Thereuare - hope to see you at the event. - Seattle
  2. Thanks for the tip. I just used the BB link to HOTWIRE and looks like the Holiday Inn in now $186 :-). I'll keep trying. Yes, confirmed I'll be on the trip. - Seattle
  3. Traveling for business and just used the PRICELINE Link from BB....was looking for a 4* and went through MTE/W, CPS, TimesSq working my way up to $185. Could have added a couple more of course, but I wasn't looking to go much higher. Any insights from the board on what might be possible for a 4* for those dates? thx -Seattle
  4. Great questions: 1. My preference was a room with two doubles or queens in it. We won't be spending a lot of time there and even with two young teenagers, we can make it work. I know rates can move up a bit for a family, even in one room. 2. Budget - willing to go to $150 a night for Priceline. If I'm shut out, I'd consider Hotwire as an option. My hope was to pick up the Grand Hyatt and ask for a room with a couple of doubles in it...fanciful thinking? Seattle
  5. Saw the note from earlier that someone was having trouble getting a room in NYC for the 27th. I used the PRICELINE links and just bid $110 - MTE; $115 - MTE, CPS; $120 - MTE, CPS, Times Square and came up empty. Taking the family to NYC for a few days. Any suggestions or insights into what might be going on in NYC that weekend would be appreciated. Any insights into winning a reasonable hotel on those dates is also appreciated. thx Seattle
  6. I have a consultant coming in to town on these dates so I offered to book his hotel for downtown Seattle. I was hoping for the Westin or Grand Hyatt and didn't want to mess around, so I just started at $75, knowing I'd get one of the two for two weekday nights. I used the PRICELINE links from this site, and was successful with the Westin on the first try. Your Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: $75.00 Subtotal: $150.00 Taxes & Fees: $30.60 Total Charges*: $180.60 Great hotel downtown and this will work out well. Thanks Better Bidding community. - Seattle
  7. In town for a business trip and needed two rooms for two nights. Got the Grand Hyatt in MTE and am pleased with the results. Used the PRICELINE links from BetterBidding.com. Oddly, I was in NYC at almost the exact same time last year and paid $105 for the same hotel. The only difference - taxes and fees are $9 higher this year (laughing). Thanks BB Community. -Seattle
  8. Used the BetterBidding PRICELINE Links. Have two colleagues coming in for a work meeting next week. Checked the board and $69 seemed to be about right and figured I'd get the Westin. Bid $69 from the start and got it on the first try....probably could have shaved a few dollars off, but this is a good rate for a good 4* hotel downtown. Best rate on the hotel site was $155.67+taxes. Thanks BetterBidding. - Seattle
  9. Receive word this morning of the requirement to get to NYC for a Weds - Friday trip. I hate going at this time of year because of the competition for rooms. I Used PRICELINE links from BB to go as high as $225 for Mid-town East, West, Central Park South and Times Square. Was at 4* in each case. I posted to the board for help and should have waited....the hotwire recommendation would have been better. I instead went and added Empire State Area and ended-up with the Affinia Dumont. I didn't move to 3.5*, (promise I didn't), so that must mean the Affinia moved up a half-star. Anyway, closest rack rate on the hotel web site is $382, so while I'm not thrilled, I'll simply be satisfied, and thank Better Bidding for the attempted guidance, (I'll be more patient next time), and for all the years of great assistance that has saved me much. Best, Seattle
  10. Thanks...I ended up paying $230 for the Affinia Dumont Hotel. Rack rate was $382 I think. Not a great deal, and I should have used your hotwire recommendation. The only great news; I used the PRICELINE links from BB. Thanks for the guidance, and I'll try to be more patient nex t time.
  11. Need some fast help for a quick and unexpected trip to the city. I don't like going this time of year, pricing is at a premium. Used PRICELINE links from BB to go as high as $225 for Mid-town East, West, Central Park South and Times Square. Was at 4* in each case. Would take 3.5* in Mid-town East as my preferred location. Any suggestions and fast help? thx Seattle
  12. Had a sudden business trip so rushed to BB and used the travel links on the site. Naturally, I reviewed previous postings and got a sense for the appropriate "range". Being in a hurry, I didn't have a lot of time to waste, so I started at $105 in MTE figuring I'd get the Grand Hyatt or Inter-Continental. Sure enough, got the Grand Hyatt on the first try. Thanks "Thereuare", to this board, and to PRICELINE, for many years of service and assistance. 14. Hi All, Have a business trip to Calgary on Monday for 1 night with two other employees. There must be something going on in Calgary as many of the regular PRICELINE and HOTWIRE hotels seem full. I checked their individual websites. Any suggestions for bidding strategy using either service? thx Seattle
  15. Will be in the Disneyland area during spring break so wanted to pick up a couple of nights near the park. I scoured the board and started at $59 for the first bid and got hit on the first try. Guess I could have started lower but I have no complaints. I've stayed at this hotel before and it's a nice spot with pool and other amenities. It's no more than a mile walk to the front-gates, but they have a shuttle service as well. It's all certainly manageable. Thanks to the board for the assistance. 16. Used Savingsbarn link. Needed a nice hotel for a business colleague coming into town. Reviewed the boards and needed something quick so it looked like $90 was a good place to start for 4* Downtown. Figured the Sheraton or Hotel Vintage Park would come up. To my utter surprise, I got the Edgewater Hotel which is a fabulous place. Very, very happy. 18. I'll check them out and may even call the Vintage and see if I can cut a deal for certain rooms. In spending more time looking at the reviews, I may have been a bit harsh initially. As always, thanks for your help.
  19. Used Savingsbarn.com link. We have a large number of employees coming into Seattle during this time for an annual meeting. I checked the board and saw that the Hotel Vintage Park was being won pretty frequently and was a 4* which just floored me. I know this hotel and it's not a 4*. I'd be hard-pressed to give it a 3*. Anyway, selected 3* on priceline.com and bid $65 for 3 rooms. Was rejected and got the counter-offer to bid $17 more. Given that I still had a fairly large number of employees to go, and I didn't want to waste a lot of time, I figured I'd try the $82 price and see what I'd get. I was expecting RedLion, Rennaissance, or Crowne Plaza and their website rates were running $180+ so $82/night would be just fine. To my utter shock and disappointment, I got the Hotel Vintage Park for $82 for 3 nights, and 3 rooms. I'm bummed as it looks like the Vintage Park is grabbing anything in the $75 and up range for anyone bidding a 3* or 4* in downtown Seattle. Hotel is ranked #24 out of 116 in Seattle on TripAdvisor but if you look at the reviews for Nov/Dec 2007, they aren't very positive. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g6...Washington.html Advice....I still have rooms to go.
  20. Used the savingsbarn link and started at $65. Received an offer from Priceline to add $17 and be accepted but passed on that and used rebids at $70 and $75. Was finally accepted at $75. Hyatt Regency Vancouver 655 Burrard Street Vancouver, British Columbia V6C 2R7 604-683-1234 Your Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: US$75.00 Subtotal: US$75.00 Taxes & Service Fees: US$19.87 Total Charges: US$94.87 I'm expecting to see the $26 parking fee or whatever crazy rate it is :-). Thanks to the board and to Thereuare for such a great service. Best, Seattle
  21. Gentleman, Thanks very much for your guidance and I guess we should move the topic to Hotwire pages since I ended up getting the Wyndham through HOTWIRE. We dropped the last day of our business trip so just stayed the one night. I still wasn't having any luck on Priceline. The Wyndham was exactly as you advertised. The rooms were large, with King beds and outstanding mattresses. There was an Aeron chair, desk, AC, TV, iron etc. The bathroom was very large and the room had a large closet space. The hotel is clean and you're right about the staffing. It was decent at the front-desk but not outstanding. Thanks very much for the assistance again. Best to both of you. -Seattle
  22. I actually need the night of the 24th & 25th, checking out the 26th. Got the Wyndham for $115 for the 24th for 2 adults, 2 rooms. Still working on the night of the 25th. It's a business trip but I still hate paying $209 a night. Thanks for the help!!
  23. WOW....I'm almost speechless. I've never been in any town when 20,000 people suddenly show up. Well, except for Vegas and E3 but that's city built for it. Ok, I'll probably split the rooms. Thanks a ton for the help and I'll post results to the board.
  24. Does anyone know if there is a convention in town on the 24th - 26th in the downtown area? I bid aggressively today on both 4* and 3* and didn't have any luck. Any help would be appreciated. thx Seattle
  25. Whoops - should read 4/02 - 4/03...can you edit? This is for an employee who will be in town for a day. Reviewed the boards and seemed like $65 was about right for Crowne Plaza, Red Lion, or Rennaissance all of which were perfectly fine options. Bid $65 on the first bid and got the Crowne Plaza.
