  1. Using the PRICELINE link, started bidding for a 3.5 star or better in downtown Minneapolis several weeks ago for a two day stay beginning 11/30/2013. Using the free rebidding zones, I went up to $78 but no success. I decided to wait until closer to the date. I then put in a bid for $60 and got a response that I could rebid for $69, so I knew I was close. Added a free rebidding zone and increased the price to $62/night and was accepted (and "upgraded" to 4 stars). Hotel $62 x 2 nights=$124 Taxes and fees=$26.62 Total=$150.62
  2. Using the PRICELINE link, started bidding for a 3.5 star or better at $45 in downtown Minneapolis. There are 12 rebidding zones at this star level. I increased my bid a bit with each rebid, until I was accepted at $65. Hotel $65 x 2 nights=$135 Taxes and fees=$27.58 Total=$157.58
  3. Used the PRICELINE link. While I would have preferred the Loop area, I started the bidding at $50 and kept raising it with free rebidding zones until I hit $70 (for a 4 star hotel, one night) with no luck. Next day, Priceline was offering to add $5 to your bid. So I added the Greater Chicago zone and offered $65 total ($60 from me and $5 from Priceline) and got the Hyatt McCormick Place on the first bid. I've stayed here several times before and it is very convenient for the Bears games; not so convenient for other activities. My cost: $60 Taxes/fees: $17.45 Total: $77.45
  4. I was looking for a 3.5* hotel in either NMA-River North, Millenium Park-Loop-Grant Park, or Greater Chicago, for two nights. Using the PRICELINE link, I began bidding at $55. There are a number of free rebidding zones at this star level. Today, Priceline was offering a bonus of adding $5 to each bid. When I hit $59 (with the Priceline bonus this automatically became $64), I was accepted at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Very convenient to Soldier Field...Go Bears! Hotel (2 nights @ $59): $118 (my cost) Taxes and fees: $28 Total: $146
  5. Wife wanted two more days in downtown Indianapolis and hoped to get the University Place Hotel so she didn't have to move hotels. Priceline wouldn't let her extend the stay at the previous rate. I checked Hotwire and they had a hotel with amenities that suggested the University Place for $66. So, figuring I could save a few dollars using the PRICELINE link, I bid $45 and was rejected. They suggested an immediate rebid of $62, so I knew I was getting close. There are 6 or 7 free rebidding zones at the four star level. Bids for $48, 50, and 54 were rejected. $56 was accepted. Room: $112 for two nights Taxes/fees: $26.86 Total: $138.86
  6. Wife was looking for a hotel near the VA hospital, which is close to downtown. Most hotels in the area were fully booked this time period. Went onto Hotwire and saw they were listing a 4 star downtown for $73 with amenities that suggested it was University Place. Figuring I could get a slightly better deal on Priceline, I used the PRICELINE link, bidding $60/night for a 4 star in the downtown area. Got the University Place on the first bid. So I probably could have started my bidding at a lower price since there are a number of free rebidding zones for Indianapolis at the 4 star level. Still this is a great deal as the regular rate is more than double what I paid. Parking is not free, however. Room: $60/night for 4 nights $240 Taxes/Fees: $50.04 Total: $290.04
  7. Another weekend, another Bears game! Using the PRICELINE link, I began bidding for a 4 star in the Loop at $50. I was rejected but offered a free rebid at $65 which I rejected (knowing I was close enough to get that offer). Kept adding free rebidding zones and $2 each time until accepted. Room: $54 Taxes and fees: $15.65 Total: $69.65
  8. Using the PRICELINE link, I was looking for a 4 star hotel in the Loop for one night. My first bid of $55 was accepted. So I probably should have started a little bit lower, but can't complain about the result. Hotel: $55 Taxes and fees: $15.76 Total: $70.76
  9. I was looking for a two night stay preferrably in the Loop and the 4 star level. My first bid of $50 was rejected. I added four free rebidding zones and raised the bid $2 each time with no luck. I then added North Michigan Avenue area and back to $50 (someone got this area for $52 for one of the two nights). Added a free rebidding zone and $2 to the price but was not accepted. Added the greater Chicago zone and upped the bid to $54; rejected again. Added one more free rebidding zone, plus a $56 price and was accepted. Used the PRICELINE link. I've stayed here before and it is very convenient to Soldier Field; not so convenient to other activities. Room (2 nights): $112 Taxes and Fees: $25.18 Total: $137.18
  10. Using the PRICELINE link, began with a $50 bid for either Loop or NMA/River North and was rejected. They suggested an immediate rebid of $65, which I ignored. My second bid added Greater Chicago and $54 and was accepted. Room: $54 Taxes and fees: $15.66 Total: $69.66
  11. Using the PRICELINE link, I started bidding yesterday in this area for a 4* at $50. I was hoping to get lucky and get the Hyatt (as a few others have gotten recently) in the mid $50s. Was rejected and went through 7 rebidding zones (including NMA) raising the bid a couple of dollars each time without success. Today, I started at $66 for Loop or NMA, and was rejected. Again, I used the rebidding zones, raising the price $2 each time. When I hit $74, they suggested a rebid of $94. I ignored this as I had two rebidding zones left. I had no success until my last available rebid was accepted. room: $78 for two nights=$156 taxes and fees: $32.64 total: $188.64
  12. I was looking for a room in downtown Chicago for one night, 11/13/10. However, availability was very limited and the prices were insane. So instead, I bid for a room in Schaumburg. The Marriott and Hyatt Regency there are both 3.5 stars. Used the PRICELINE link, started at $30/night and was rejected. There are 12 free rebid zones at that star level. I increased the bid by $2 each time until I got accepted. room: $42 taxes and fees: $12.36 total: $54.36
  13. Using the PRICELINE link, and seeing another bidder's success at $70 for the same dates and location, I began bidding a couple of days ago for a 3.5* or better in either this area, N. Michigan Avenue, or Greater Chicago at $65. I was rejected but there are three free rebidding zones at this level, so I tried $68, $70, and $72 with no luck. Today I thought I'd try again at $70, bidding only for the Loop area and 4* and was accepted. So I'm kind of confused why my earlier bid at the same or higher price, in a wider area and with more star levels, was rejected. But all's well that ends well. Hotel cost: $70 Taxes and fees: $18.30 Total: $88.30
  14. Needing a room near the airport near the last minute, and using the PRICELINE link, I bid $45 for a 3* or better. I was rejected but was offered a free rebid at $60. I did not go that route since there are two free rebidding zones at that star level. Using one of these, I raised my bid to $50 and was accepted at the airport Hilton. Room: $50 Taxes and fees: $15.47 Total: $65.47
  15. Since I stayed again at this hotel (September 11-12, 2010) I have a few more comments to add. There was no check in line this time and I asked about a room without an adjoining door and down the hall. The friendly and helpful front desk person asked if I'd like a corner room with a king bed. That sounded super! The end wall was on one side of me and a stairway on the other. Much quieter! This type of room number ends in 32. Highly recommended.
  16. I'm looking at two Suite hotels. One (3*) is probably the Wyndham in Glenview with the following amentities: Suite, Fitness Center, Pool, Restaurant, Laundry. The other is 3.5* with: Suite, Smoke-free, Fitness Center, Pool, Restaurant, Business Center, Laundry Facilities, and Hign Speed Internet Access. I'm wondering if this is the Marriott Suites in Deerfield. Thanks for any help!
  17. I stayed here one night (August 28, 2010) primarily to go to a Bears preseason game at Soldier Field. The number 3 bus from downtown stops right across the street from the hotel. There is no commerce in the area, but Chinatown is a 15 minute walk or (as I did) you can take the Cermak bus (#21, I think) and get there quickly and easily. The hotel is modern and was quite busy. A bit of a check in line with about a 15 minute wait. Rooms are nicely furnished. Your happyness may depend on how quiet your next door neighbors are. There was an adjoining door to the next room on one side and you could hear every conversation. Luckily, that group went to bed early. On the other side, the next morning, I could hear the passionate cries of whoopie going on. Getting to the Bears game was a breeze. It was quite a sight to return to my room after the game as see all the traffic congestion on Lake Shore Drive and in the Soldier Field parking lots. You can also take the Cermak bus to the Chinatown Red Line train station, which will take you to the Loop and the North Side. I felt pretty safe going to Soldier Field and back, but the neigborhood to the west and south is pretty deserted at night.
  18. Using the PRICELINE link, I started bidding two days ago for a 3.5 star hotel in either the Loop/Millennium Park, N. Michigan Avenue/River North, or Greater Chicago areas. On day 1, I started with $70 and was rejected. There are three free rebidding zones at that star level, and I raised my bid $2 each time with no luck. On day 2, I repeated the process starting at $78 (rejected) and increasinjg by $2 for the three free rebids; still no luck. Today (day 3), my opening bid of $85 was accepted at the Hyatt (a 4* upgrade). This hotel is within easy walking distance of Soldier Field, which is my destination! One night hotel: $85 Taxes/fees: $20.79 Total: $105.79
  19. Started bidding for a room in the Loop at the 4* level at $70. Was rejected but there were 5 rebidding zones at the 4* level and I increased my bid by $2 each time (to $80). Still no luck so I added the N. Michigan Av/River North rebidding zone at $82 with no success. Added the Greater Chicago zone at $84 and that was where I was accepted. Hotel is close to Soldier Field, which is my destination. One night hotel: $84 Taxes and fees: $20.67 Total: $104.67
  20. This easy to get to hotel is right off of I-88 and across the street from a Hilton. The property seems newish and well kept up. There is an office building in the back. Check in was quick and easy. Most of the rooms have connecting doors to the next room (which can be a problem depending on your neighbor); a few rooms which don't connect are near the elevators. Ice machines are on the even number floors. The room was fine and the first night was quiet. The second night, I had a screaming child in the room next to me along with a parade of adults entering/leaving. I called the front desk and ask to be moved. They did so and the new room was nice and quiet. They do charge a connection fee for 800 numbers. Some free Wall Street Journals were available in the lobby. Not too far away are good places for breakfast or lunch, such as pancake houses, Panera, and the like. The hotel has a nice business center, with several computers and free internet. There is a charge for printing or copying. Overall, a positive experience.
  21. Downtown Chicago hotels had limited availability for the nights I was looking for, so I opted for the western suburbs. Using the PRICELINE link, I was bidding for a 3.5* hotel in either Oak Brook-Downers Grove or Lisle-Naperville. Began with a $38 bid for either area and was rejected. There are a number of rebidding zones available, so I kept bidding at $2 increments. Got accepted at the Wyndham Hotel Lisle for $42. Room cost: $42 x two nights = $84 Taxes and Fees: $18.04 Total: $102.04
  22. I stayed here one night in February 2010. This hotel used to be a Hyatt. It is part of the historic Union Station in downtown, which has been nicely restored. It functions as an indoor mall, with specialty shops and a food court. Front desk service was quick and helpful. The rooms are nice, if a bit dark. Standard Marriott features: good bed, pillows, bathrooms. The room layout tends to minimize noise from the hallways, although you might find yourself near an ice and pop machine. The Scottrade Center (St. Louis Blues) is just a couple of blocks away. The are several restaurants nearby, including a Houlihans and a Hard Rock Cafe. In the Station is an Einstein's Bagels, which is good for breakfast or a snack. There are some parking meters on Market Street and a (paid) parking lot just west of Union Station; the rate (at least on the weekends) was $14 per day with in/out privileges.
  23. Using the PRICELINE line, I began bidding for a 3.5 star or better hotel in downtown St. Louis for one night (2/6/10) at $38. This was rejected but at this star level there are 5 rebidding zones. I kept increasing the bid by $2 until I got accepted at $42 (plus $13.92 in taxes and fees). The Marriott was an "upgrade" to 4 stars.
  24. I stayed here for three nights the weekend after Christmas 2009. I had a positive experience. There is a free parking garage attached to the hotel. The hotel was pretty empty and there was very little noise. I asked for a room in a quiet location and they recommended the top (seventh) floor. The first room had an adjoining door, so we asked if there were any rooms on seven without, and they moved us. The rooms were up to the usual Hilton grade standard: good bed and even better pillows. Plenty of drawer space and an adequate closet. TV was an older model, but the reception was good. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful with directions. The "executive" wing is also on the 7th floor and you can access a computer there by using your room key. The location is tremendous, just across the street from Oak Brook mall. There are several fine restaurants in the area, including four from the "Lettuce Entertain You" group. There is also a Corner Bakery on the east side of the mall (opens at 7:30 am), and a Panera (which opens earlier), just north of the mall on route 83 (west side).
  25. This is the Doubletree Oakbrook; just across the street from the mall.
