  1. Haven't gotten any such email, but wouldn't be surprised to get something tacky like that from PRICELINE. Their TV ads with Shatner are disgusting, infantile, an insult to intelligence. As are their customer-service email responses.
  2. Housekeers are awesome people in most places. I rarely have bad experience with them. I trust that you were good enough to both leave a fair tip for the maid when you left, despite the upset from the loss at the time, and to reimburse the hotel for the FedEx shipping cost.
  3. Not that many connect at Warsaw, but here's a convenient and relatively inexpensive facility to rest and freshen up if you do happen there. Inexepensive is relative to the rates of hotels in the area. And you don't even have to enter the country! From the airport's website: "Falcon" Hotel Service The "Falcon" Hotel Service is located in the transit area of the airport. It is designed to serve passengers in transit through Warsaw. It has 8 rooms. Phone: +48 (22) 650 48 91 Fax: +48 (22) 650 48 92 The hotel has no website and no published email. Here is the info I got over the phone: 8 rooms, some single and some double. The rooms do not have private bathrooms. Shared facilities including showers. There are computer terminals with free Internet access. She did not know if there was WiFi access. 165 PLN (US$67) for 6 hours - single. 220 PLN (US$89) for 6 hours - double. 240 PLN (US$97) for 24 hours - single 330 PLN (US$133) for 24 hours - double. Advance reservations highly advisable, by phone, fax or mail. The facility is inside the transit terminal, so accessible without entering the country. For those seeking traditional accommodation, the Marriott Courtyard is apparently a short walk from the terminal. It is expensive, but can be booked for just 10,000 points per night if you happen to have Marriott Rewards points.

  5. I was able to add nights at this hotel last year. Maybe a new policy, could be just a fluke.
  6. Sorry I can't help, but thanks for this post -- I'm delighted to see that Priceline now has Name Your Own Price in Israel (Tel Aviv and Haifa).
  7. Yes, of course it was me who left them in there. That's why I prefaced my post with [rant]... but thanks anyway for pointing out the obvious ;-) Here's to a new year with no losses.
  8. I'm already here on a previous 4-night win, so it's nice to not have to change hotels. My trip to Denver got pushed back to 1/6, so I get to stay in LA much longer :-) Happy New Year to you too.
  9. Check-In Date: Tuesday, January 1, 2008 Check-Out Date: Sunday, January 6, 2008 Hotel Name: Residence Inn Manhattan Beach 1700 North Sepulveda Boulevard Manhattan Beach, California 90266 Your Offer Price: $46.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 5 Subtotal: $230.00 Taxes and Service Fees: $42.47 Total Charges: $272.47 $45 rejected.
  10. Chances are you could have gotten the Residence Inn in Manhattan Beach for about the same price. Yes, definitely do not bid 2* in any LA zone. Are you going to be in that area next weekend (12/28-1/1)?
  11. Check-In Date: Friday, December 28, 2007 Check-Out Date: Tuesday, January 1, 2008 Hotel Name: Residence Inn Manhattan Beach 1700 North Sepulveda Boulevard Manhattan Beach, California 90266 Your Offer Price: $46.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 4 Subtotal: $184.00 Taxes and Service Fees: $35.43 Total Charges: $219.43 $45 rejected. $119 on the hotel's website.
  12. After years of renting cars at LAX, I've only now discovered Midway Car Rental. Their prices are usually low like the other smaller companies such as Fox and Ace. For the upcoming long New Year's weekend, their rate beat everybody else, so I booked. When I looked at the estimated total charges, all there was there was the daily rate plus sales tax. Suspicious, I called the location to ask about all the other usual charges: 11.11% airport concession fee, 2.5% tourism assessment, $3 facility fee, etc. The lady on the phone confirmed: they charge none of that! The secret is that their office is located inside the Radisson hotel (right by the exit from LAX), and they don't operate a shuttle: their customers ride the hotel's shuttle... How sweet is that?! My $15/day 4-day rental is $60 + $4.95 sales tax for a total of $64.95. If I were to bid on Priceline I'd have to be successful at $9 to match this total, due to all their taxes and fees, and it wouldn't be cancelable like my conventional reservation is.
  13. Got a letter yesterday, and an email today, informing me that my HOTWIRE account has been granted 100 HotDollars because I haven't purchased in a long time and they "want me back" (strange, because I purchased as recently as 05/29/07). This can be used as a $100 credit towards any Hotwire purchase. A gift for the holidays or clamoring for some business? That's enough for a night at a 4* hotel in San Francisco, with change!
  14. I always thought that the PT Cruiser was the ugliest car, until I saw the HHR.
  15. Check-In Date: Sunday, November 4, 2007 Check-Out Date: Monday, November 5, 2007 Hotel Name: Courtyard By Marriott Lax Century Boulevard 6161 West Century Boulevard Los Angeles, California 90045 Your Offer Price: $46.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Subtotal: $46.00 Taxes and Service Fees: $13.79 Total Charges: $59.79 $45 rejected $189 on the hotel's website with AAA discount. That's over 4 times the Priceline rate.
  16. You got a great deal. It's a very nice hotel, I used to get it often on Hotwire years ago when it was Summerfield Suites, and loved it. The Staybridge brand makes it better because with them - Internet access is free. SFO Staybridge and SSF Comfort Suites are worlds apart. This (2.5*) is like a very nice residential apartment complex; the Comfort Suites (1*) is like a dumpy housing project.

  19. Taking my dad on a road trip to see the canyons in southern Utah. The schedule called for an overnight stay at St. George, so I looked in the usual places and found that there are many hotels. I also saw a Country Inn & Suites for a reasonable $80. Although I knew I could probably get some 2* or even 2.5* on Priceline for about $50, I decided to conventionally book the Country Inn & Suites because of my experience with this brand in Sunnyvale, CA - second home of WzDancer. Mainly because that location serves a wonderful breakfast, which is important to my dad. Boy, what a disappointed this turned out to be. The room was fine and the Internet connection incredibly fast. But the came breakfast. A world apart from the Sunnyvale hotel. Disgusting egg and meat patties, some stale bagels and toast bread, juice with chlorine-water aftertaste. A small basket with 3 bananas and a couple of apples. It was the quality and selection of what you would expect and one of the low-end Best Western motels. Bottom line: forget brand loyalty. The experience at one location will not necessarily be consistent with another. So best to just Priceline it, get whatever you get for half the money, then go spend the difference at an expensive breakfast restaurant.
  20. 21. Remember that if you're going to rely on your credit card to provide loss/damage coverage for the rental car, many cards limit coverage to rentals of 14-15 days.

You don't need to first look up flights. As soon as you're on Travelocity's home page, click on the "Last Minute Packages" tab and that's where you look up these combos for the upcoming weeks. For flights within the next three weeks or so, a lot of the time these combos cost far less than the flights alone. Most of my Travelocity flight purchases have been through this feature for years now. I usually get a flight+car package as these are even cheaper than flight+hotel.
  23. This hotel is in a very good quiet area between I-5 and I-405. It's a business area, I didn't see any residences around, meaning that it was very quiet and peaceful at night. I arrived around 9pm. After waiting a few long minutes for someone to come to the front desk, and a few "hello" calls, a guy came up and asked "what do you need? I was eating." Well, how about checking me in, you cookoo? Everything in my room was clean and in good working order, except the toilet that had obviously not been cleaned: there were urine stains on the rim under the seat. No tip for the maid. Room same as any other ESA: full-size fridge, sink, range, microwave, toaster, coffee maker. There was a basic set of dishes and silverware for two, and a couple of pans. The room had a couch; a small dresser; a couple of clothes racks on the wall; iron and board. The bathroom only had a couple of small soap bars, no shampoo. Maid service is weekly, with a "refresher" mid-week. Free parking, local and 800 calls. No breakfast, no paper. Wireless high-speed Internet is available for a one-time fee per stay. No additional taxes/fees charged.
  24. This motel is on a quiet road on the west side of Augusta near I-20 and I-520. Everything in my room was clean and in good working order. The room was very basic, much like a Travelodge or a notch up from Motel 6. Priceline rates it 2-stars but it should probably be a 1-star: it's inferior to the usual 2-star Priceline hotels. Turned out that booking directly on the hotel's website would have been cheaper than through Priceline, due to Priceline's fees. The room had two full size beds and a large dresser. A desk with a couple of chairs. Free parking, local and 800 calls. Breakfast was just some sugar-loaded danishes. Wireless high-speed Internet was free and fast. No additional taxes/fees charged.
  25. This hotel is located on a busy road but soundproofing was good so no traffic noise. My room did not feel very clean. The table, kitchen surfaces and bathroom floor were sticky. Everything was in working order but the desk glass lamp cover was broken and could injur someone, especially if a child would play with it. Room same as any other ESD: full-size fridge, sink, range, microwave, toaster, coffee maker. There was a basic set of dishes and silverware for two, and a couple of pans. The room had a couch; a large dresser; a large closet; iron and board. The bathroom only had a couple of small soap bars, no shampoo. Maid service is weekly, with a "refresher" mid-week. Free parking, local and 800 calls. There is a free breakfast that I didn't get to see but I understand it consists of merely bagels and coffee or something to that extent. Wireless high-speed Internet is available for a one-time fee per stay. No additional taxes/fees charged, they didn't even ask for a credit card for incidentals.
