  1. Good news is I got a hotel that was not listed on betterbidding.com history for the South Kingstown area (part of the greater Newport area) so here's a new hotel for the list!! This one is quite popular with University of Rhode Island folks due to the close proximity to campus. Needed two nights in Kingston, RI (near University of Rhode Island) for 11/11 to 11/13/2010. After searching determined my 2.5* hotel could have been Holiday Inn South Kingstown, and 3* hotel could have been Hampton Inn South Kingstown. Published rates were $94+tax ($106 total) for Holiday Inn, and $109+tax ($123 total) via Kayak.com. Wasn't sure how low I'd be able to go but tried a few low, unsuccessful bids: Day 1 1st bid: $45
  2. Wanted this hotel in particular due to the location. Read some so-so reviews on Trip Advisor, but will take my chances with this one. Last night, first bid was $50 (had a few days, tried to low-ball), by adding 3*, and Montreal, October 16-18. Rejected. Second bid last night, tho no free rebid zones, so changed dates to one night only Oct 16-17 and rebid $55. Rejected. Tonight, 24 hours later, rebid Oct 16-18 at $64. Rejected. Also, rebid the Oct 16-17 at $67 and this was accepted; added the additional night option that PRICELINE offers and that bid was accepted. Check-In Date: Saturday, October 17, 2010 Check-Out Date: Monday, October 18, 2010 Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: $67.00 (US dollars) Subtotal: $67.00 (US dollars) x 2 = $134.00 Taxes and Fees: $18.93 (US dollars) x 2 = $37.86 Total Charges for Add. Night Res.: $85.93 (US dollars) x 2 = $171.86
  3. Last minute trip ... wanted 3* in New Haven. Started bidding at $58, got a free offer to rebid $15+ more to get my offer accepted, I chose to decline that offer, and increased my original bid to $65 (a price I noticed people won the hotels at) by adding a free rebid area of East Haven. $65 was accepted. Check-In Date: Friday, August 13, 2010 Check-Out Date: Saturday, August 14, 2010 Hotel Name: Omni New Haven Hotel At Yale University 155 Temple Street New Haven, Connecticut 06510 203-772-6664 Your Offer Price: $65.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Subtotal: $65.00 Taxes and Fees: $15.83 Total Charges*: $80.83
  4. Wanted 4* in Dupont Circle (only) for 7/31 to 8/2, didn't want to wait 24 hours to rebid so knew how high I should get to ($90s with free rebids). Used betterbidding PRICELINE link (of course!)! Bid starting at $72 in Dupont Circle, rejected Added DC Burbs and rebid at $77, rejected Added Georgetown North and rebid at $85, rejected Added Mount Vernon and rebid at $92, rejected Added Alexandria West and rebid at $97, offer accepted (thinking had to bid higher for the more expensive Sunday night, noticed someone today won a bid of $90 for 7/31 to 8/1 (departure on Sunday)) The Fairfax Hotel At Embassy Row 4 Star Dupont Circle - Woodley Park 2100 Massachusetts Ave Nw Washington, District Of Columbia 20008 202-293-2100 Check-In Date: Sat, Jul 31, 2010 / After 03:00 PM Check-Out Date: Mon, Aug 2, 2010 / 12:00 PM Your Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: $97.00 Subtotal: $194.00 Taxes & Fees: $36.20 Total Charges*: $230.20
  5. Quick trip to Philly, opening bid at $70 accepted. Did this via the Better Bidding PRICELINE link. Check-in Date: Saturday, June 19, 2010 Check-Out Date: Sunday, June 20, 2010 Hotel Name: Hyatt at the Bellevue Broad and Walnut Streets Philadelphia, PA 19102 215-893-1234 Offer Price: $70 Taxes & Fees: $18.07 Total: $88.07
  6. Going to visit my sister at University of Rhode Island next week. Have stayed at and wanted to get Spring Hill Suites, but a 3* option in that area came up (though I presumed Spring Hill to be 2.5*) so lowballed a $55 offer to see what a 3* might be. Offer was not accepted. Since I don't have a lot of time, I chose to add 2.5* to the same area, and reduced my bid to $40. Got the hotel I wanted at a great price (and per kayak it was $124, so saved a bundle!). Am just curious what that 3* might have been. Check-In Date: Monday, May 10, 2010 Check-Out Date: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 Hotel Name: Springhill Suites By Marriott Warwick 14 James P Murply Industrial Highway West Warwick, Rhode Island 02893 401-822-1244 Summary of Charges Your Offer Price: $40.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Subtotal: $40.00 Taxes and Fees: $12.63 Total Charges: $52.63
  7. Hey betterbidders! It has been awhile since I've done any travel bidding. Mostly doing work travel. But my main reason for posting is that I am looking for the nicest hotel I can get in Paris, France. In particular by looking at the posted lists I am only interested in the 4* Paris hotels (not decided on way or another if I will go the Hotwire route vs. Priceline). I am only considering hotels in these sectors (4*) on Priceline: Paris (Champs Elysees - Opera Quarter West) Paris (Opera Quarter East - Les Halles) I am going to be there for a weekend after a cruise with my mom & sister so will need two rooms & want to get this right. In terms of Priceline bidding, can anyone recommend if I should start & place low-ball bids now for those hotels, or is it better to bid closer to the travel date? I'm sure the argument goes one way or another but it has been awhile since bidding (2 years) so not sure if things have changed. Also, as it has been about 2 years are there any new major changes to bidding strategies / the way it works that I should be aware of? Also, does anyone know which Hotwire 4* Hilton is part of the Trocadero/Champs Elysees area is? There are quite a few Hiltons in Paris. I am guessing it is the Hilton La Defense... I'm glad to be back obsessively researching & planning a trip on betterbidding!
  8. Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina 1601 Bayshore Drive Vancouver, British Columbia V6G 2V4 Canada (604) 682-3377 Amenities: (SEE NOTE BELOW - as seems the amenities have changed from what is listed on this site) Restaurant(s) Pool(s) Fitness Center Spa Services Dates: April 2 to April 4 2006 1 room(s) @ $96.00 per night x 2 night(s) $192.00 Hotel Taxes and fees: $37.11 Total Price $229.11 A note on the (changed) amenities: FYI Per the hotwire list on betterbidding, these amenities are identical and in the same zone as the Sheraton Wall Centre (which I thought I'd end up getting). Looks like Hotwire shaved off some of the Westin's amenities (took away Business Center & Tennis nearby) - perhaps to make it seem like the Sheraton Wall Centre which seems to be in a better location/rating than the Westin. My thoughts/guess, but who knows, though.
  9. Congratulations, you got your price of $110 for a 5-star hotel room. Your Offer Price: $110.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Subtotal: $110.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $23.14 Total Charges: $133.14 I tried only this one bid based upon my budget for that leg of my trip, and info I have seen. I had a one-night layover in Hong Kong on my journey from Singapore to Tokyo. I originally was going to stay at an airport hotel, but the price exceeded the budget I had set for an airport stay (more than $200 at a nice hotel). I am staying at the Intercontinental Kowloon (TSL) when I return to Hong Kong to visit for real on 2/10-2/13 (not a PL bid, but highly recommended to get a harbour view from this hotel by a good friend of mine who is a high end Asia Tour Package provider so booked direct with Intercontinental).
  10. So I just rebid at $86 for the 3/10-3/13 dates, no luck. :) Did the free rebid at $81 for only the 3/11-3/13 nights, no luck. Will try $86 for 3/11-3/13 in three days. What do you guys suggest as an appropriate bid for that one night if splitting works at $86? Remember, the Thursday night 3/10 is the one that is more expensive than Fri-Sun 3/11-3/13. I'm going to wait first bidding for the 3/10 night before having a positive result with the 3/11-3/13 dates on PL. If I keep rebidding at $5, but if it hits $100 and no hits, I will take WillTravel's advice and book something direct. Maybe the Westin or Sheraton to earn SW points. Thanks for your input WillTravel! I never used TravelWeb before.... Anyone know what 4* in Warsaw is on PL?
  11. Hey you never know, I had luck no reason why you won't either! Look forward to seeing how you fare with PL for your trip to the Big Easy!
  12. I figured there was something up with that suggested retail price. I will ignore it going forward, thanks thereuare. So I will focus on $86 next for those nights. I have no problem splitting my nights. Let me know your suggestions on how I should go about it and I'll consider them before rebidding the nights all in one lump sum. Thanks!!
  13. (An edit of my posting on TripAdvisor FYI) I stayed only one night at this hotel on June 2, 2004. I was going to stay with a friend the first night in Miami but wanted to see what Priceline could give me for 4 stars under $80 - well I got this hotel, and I was pretty happy! I arrived there and walking into the lobby I was quite surprised that the photos I had seen were not as good as the reality! The very playful, comfortable funky lobby - with this great quirky furniture - felt something akin to small comfy stools, and a great big centerpiece set of stools with a huge lamp shade in the center well above our heads. There is sort of this playful nature about the furnishings - furniture you won't see in your grandma's house...it's different but totally works! The staff was overly gracious, and I met Stefan, the concierge of the hotel who remembered my name ever time I entered or left the hotel. He had many suggestions for things to do and offered his advice on what to do in Miami (my first time there). The elevator had this really dim lit glow to it - and the hallways also had a playful nature as well. If I remember correctly there were little etchings under the room number outside the room in the figure of a svelte man or woman. The decor and hotel furnishings have this sort of bordello, pin-up burlesque theme to it...which was really unique and lighthearted. I walked into the room and was shocked! A really good sized room - I'm high maintenance about room size and I totally didn't expect this. It was not enormous but just perfect in size and use of space. Beautiful platform bed with crisp white sheets and Hotel Clinton embossed pillow cases and one of the more comfortable mattresses/down comforters I've slept on; a Sharper Image CD player (don't forget your CDs), I had my iPod; spacious closet, venetian blinds, interesting playful art (again playful, fun). But my favorite part of all in this room - THE BATHROOM: Beautiful bathroom - granite tile floors, walk in shower that was pretty large, a really terrific vanity/sink area with excellent amenities (I snagged the bars of soap and I NEVER do that); waffle-patterned white robes that were very light and comfortable, huge plush towels. The water pressure wasn't all that but who cares. The colors were done in a very muted earthy way and I wanted to rip that bathroom out and put it into my New York apartment. The mirror could be turned multiple ways, and also you could see into the bedroom from the bathroom (glass portion of the wall, though there was a shade for privacy). My room faced the street and I heard no noise. The pool area was small, yes, but always just a few people there - nice chaise lounges for sunbathing, great ambiance at night. The restaurant there had closed down and that stunk because it looked really cute and trendy. My only bone of contention was that the carpet (though a nice one) in my room had some remnants of the last guest, there were some of those plastic tags from clothing price tags lying around by the door, etc. Nothing major but that was the only blemish to be seen and obviously not a big deal at all. My suggestion: the hotel is great, very good best kept secret, good rates, very helpful staff (and did I mention FREE INTERNET ACCESS in the lobby?). 3 minute walk to the beach and many many many beachfront restaurants. Stay here for a night or two - go to a large resort if you want impersonal service yet with a big crowded pool. No snobbery here - very trendy hotel but with a sense of relaxation that some of the other hotels I saw in South Beach lacked. Hotel restaurant was closed during my stay, menu looked good, hopefully it reopened since.
  14. :) I've tried three bids so far for a 5* in Warsaw: $75, not accepted $76, not accepted $81, not accepted The suggested retail price for a 5* 3/10/2005-3/13/2005 is $92, at $80 I got the "small chance of being accepted", at $81 no such message. I'm surprised how low the suggested retail price is - normally in my experience this (for other cities) is much much higher, and given that I'm bidding close to that range and it is not accepted makes me wonder. Could this $92 be a glitch/wrong? What does anyone suggest my next bid should be? Has anyone ever bid at the suggested retail price and still didn't have your price be accepted? Any suggestions advice would help. I could rebid at the 4* but I do not know what these hotels are and don't want to take that chance. Suggested 4* retail price for Warsaw is $84. Thanks!
  15. What a story - Some of these off-the-beaten path stories are absolutely HYSTERICAL! I think I may have a similar experience going to Turkey and visiting a friend of mine who lives in Selcuk, an hour flight, or multi-hour train ride from Istanbul - we'll see... Well with the help of this board and any success at Priceline I may have a good set of lodging choices at least. 90 days to pay for hotels ugh... But I'm not complaining it will be well worth it! I'll post future activity with hotels. Thanks thereuare. p.s. congrats on the new addition to your family! i caught some of those posts the other day.
  16. Congratulations, you got your price of $70 for a 4-star hotel room. Your Offer Price: $70.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 3 Subtotal: $210.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $41.87 Total Charges: $251.87 I've bid several times to get a 5*, and as my trip is not until March I've tried to low-ball it with $70, $80 for a 5*, never got it right, and also went low with rebid for 4* $60, $65, no luck. Tonight tried with a $80 5* bid, got rejected, retried by adding 4* with $70 and the offer was accepted. I probably could have played more and gotten a lower rate, but I am taking an around-the-world trip using the One World Alliance Jan 5 - April 14 2005 and have a lot more planning (hotel-wise) to do, so I don't have the luxury of time to keep playing since I want to set my hotel plans in stone by end of 2004. Not to say I'm not happy with $70 for the hotel I wanted. I will post my other bids and successes with other hotels. Working on Warsaw, Amsterdam, Venice currently any pricing strategies would be helpful, prefer to get 5* in Warsaw not sure right pricing level. Not sure if I will use Priceline for London or not. Not bidding every city since I'm using Starwood points to pay for hotel rooms in a lot of cities.
  17. First bid of $40 was rejected, though Priceline offered me to up my bid at $12 additional. I decided to add the Garden District and rebid at $45, came back as a decline, so I added New Orleans East and $1 more and won my bid at the French Quarter Marriott for $46 per night. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Congratulations, you got your price of $46 for a 4-star hotel room. Marriott New Orleans French Quarter 555 Canal Street New Orleans, Louisiana 70130 504-581-1000 Check-In Date: Tue, Dec 28, 2004 Check-In Time: After 03:00 PM Check-Out Date: Thu, Dec 30, 2004 Check-Out Time: 12:00 PM Your Offer Price: $46.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 2 Subtotal: $92.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $20.32 Total Charges: $112.32
  18. thanks for the tidbits, thereuare: FYI when i first saw what i thought to be the royal crowne plaza in South Beach, it was listed as 4* with all the amenities that matched the hotel listing on this site...but i hesitated to do more hotel research etc. before booking and the next day it was gone! alas... FUNNY enough, if you look at the vacations section on hotwire, the royal crowne plaza DOES come up with the packages for my dates (6/3 to 6/6)...not sure why it would be there but not listed in the hotel section (unless they are playing with ratings???).
  19. thereuare: thank you, by the way, i notice all your helpful hints & posts all throughout this site - i can't stop reading postings - this is addictive! you're administration of this site seems non-stop and effortless (though i'm sure it is A LOT of work! especially to teach us newbies!). :) i'm psyched for my trip (and the deal i got on the new clinton hotel for my first night). i booked the doubletree surfcomber through the hilton website for $119 - i'm going to keep my eyes open on hotwire to see if any other "known" 4* in SoBe become available ... until then! i don't want to take my chances on priceline as i have specific ideas of where i want to spend the other 3 days of my trip (hotel on the beach with all of the perks - the new clinton has a pool table for a pool and is two blocks from the beach but fine for the first night). i will post my reviews of both hotels for everyone's benefit!
  20. P.S. FIRST time using Priceline (or Hotwire for that matter) - thanks to this website and everyone's tips I was able to figure out how to rebid on Priceline... 1st bid of $65 was rejected. 2nd bid (added South West Miami which has no 4*) at $70 rejected. I got a message back saying to bid $22 more ($92 total) and I'd get a room, but still played with the bidding: 3rd bid (added North Miami - no 4*) and upped to $80, ACCEPTED. New Clinton Hotel (NOTE: In the forum hotel lists it is listed as Clinton Hotel - though it really is New Clinton Hotel - think the name changed after the hotel re-opened). Priceline Zone: South Beach Address: South Beach 825 Washington Avenue Miami Beach, Florida 33139 305-938-4040 Check-In Date: Wed, June 2, 2004 Check-In Time: After 03:00 PM Check-Out Date: Thurs, June 3, 2004 Check-Out Time: 12:00 PM Your Offer Price: $80.00 Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Subtotal: $80.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $17.58 Total Charges: $97.58 I tested this date as I was going to stay with a friend, thought the bid would have given me Royal Crowne Plaza, so am going to stick with my other 3 nights reserved at the Doubletree Surfcomber...didn't see Royal Crowne Plaza show up on Hotwire, and not taking my chances with Priceline this go around - I want specific hotels. But for one night, I will enjoy the New Hotel Clinton! :) Gregg
  21. Hi - this is a great service! Thank you for administering it. I'm curious what the follow-up of this post was, if any? I'm new to online bidding and really want to stay at the Royal Crowne Plaza Hotel in South Beach, yet I saw a previous message from someone who thought they were bidding on the Royal but got the Palms instead (though as you mention they may have mistaken the Business Center for the Laundry). You mention you stayed at the Royal Crowne Plaza, was this through Hotwire or Priceline? Do you have any suggestions/strategies? I've never used either website. I kind of have figured out Hotwire (look at the hotels that they couple with the flights for the packages) and then compare the ratings for those hotels to the section where the hotel is hidden. I'm going 6/3 to 6/6, and my brother has stayed there three times and swears by this place - I really like the location. Any news on the traveler who posted this originally about the Palms? I'd appreciate any insight you may have - and any suggestions. Gregg :)
