  1. And if you have the back up reservation, you can try this more than once as your date approaches since what they will accept can change. Maybe not even go all the way up to $80 the first couple of times...
  2. When I meant shows, I was talking about the overhead display - they do a different one every hour. If you are staying right there, it's easy to go see them.
  3. From what I know, if you get an accepted bid downtown in a 4* it is going to be the Golden Nugget. Are there any other 4*'s down there? So you start your bidding in that zone. You can add the strip easily. There are some other zones in Vegas that don't have 4* or higher that you should be able to add. Determine this by trying a new bid and clicking on the various zones to see what star levels are available. People here can help you with this, too. There is information on this in other threads, too. Sombody yesterday wanted downtown 4* and made a $70 bid and it wasn't accepted. They were offered $90 to take it. So you are probably looking in that range, depending on availability and day of week. You should be able to make several bids a day, so you can start low and don't have to raise it much between bids. Gambling odds are better downtown, especially at the El Cortez - single deck BJ with decent rules. And there can be some interesting stuff going on on Fremont street. If you like the shows, you will be able to see a bunch of different ones if you are staying there. You can always drive to the strip, but your level of alcohol consumption might determine whether that is a good idea.
  4. I would be very surprised if they don't have a car big enough for you when you get there. I always book economy cars and end up with compact, intermediate or full size. With a mini van, though, what are they going to say? All we have is a sedan? I don't think so. And if they did, you have every right to go ballistic and contact Hotwire about it. I don't think it would happen though. Would an SUV suffice? That is the only thing I think they would offer you in place. And even then, what about somebody that needs cargo space? You are not going to be left out in the cold. I really don't think so. They only upgrade, not downgrade in all my experience.
  5. You can call and ask or you can ask when you get there and you might very well get two beds. Most of the time when I ask for two beds after booking on priceline I get it, if the hotel has them. Some don't or only have a few 2 bed rooms and want extra for them. I got upgraded to a suite on a recent stay in Florida because all the regular rooms were smoking, and I didn't get charged for it. There is a decent chance you will get what you want. But there is no guarantee. Don't take the kids to the check in desk, though. It seems if you are willing to deal with one bed on a priceline request, you should be ok with one bed from a Hotwire request. Either way, you might get two beds if you ask. We were in San Juan in March and for one of our nights got the Holiday Inn Express San Juan (2* Priceline, $80, 23.26 fees, 1 night, 3/12/07) and were given 2 beds, I think without even asking. Don't forget to use the site links.
  6. Vegas is so big that there have been articles lately about young, healthy people renting mobility scooters designed for handicapped people because they are so tired of walking. There is no way you can see it all by walking from one hotel. All the hotels have big parking structures that are free to park in. They want you to go to their casinos. The only issue with driving is if you intend to be drinking. If you want to use PRICELINE, you really need to book 2 rooms. If you use HOTWIRE, it appears you can specify a room for 4 people. Either way, use the links on this site if you want to try it. You might get something east or west of the strip for the prices you are looking for. If you want to see it all and you get a room mid-strip and pay a lot for it, you still will probably be getting in your car if you want to go look at TI or the Luxor or the Stratosphere or Fremont Street. You will not want to walk to Caesar's from Circus Circus. It's big. There are some tram options, though, and the monorail. For instance, you can stay at the Sahara and have a monorail pass and go all the way down to the MGM that way. I think there is a reasonable tram service, too and public buses.
  7. When you use priceline for airfare and have a timeshare reservation, you either have to shoot for days before and after your 7 night timeshare interval and be willing to pick up a hotel room at the beginning or end and have a little longer vacation or pick your dates such that it is possible that the flight times will cut into your timeshare interval a little bit. Usually you have to leave pretty early on check out day anyhow, so an early flight out isn't a big deal. You could find yourself needing to find something to do with yourself and somewhere to put your stuff for the day if you get a late flight. On your arrival day, you have to accept that you may arrive late and lose that day. Or you can arrive the day before and get a hotel room. Hotels are expensive on Maui, though. I have booked a number of airfares to Hawaii and have tried to use priceline for it but was never able to get a great price. I ended up booking directly every time. There are some markets priceline just doesn't work well for. I don't quite understand it as there have to be empty seats going to Hawaii, too.
  8. It seemed that way to me, too, though I think I saw one for $70 on Fremont in Vegas for a 4* which somebody on here just said they could not get. That could just be the difference between weekend and weekday, probably. I am very curios, though, if those are random results or if they are skewed high intentionally by PL... :)
  9. If you are willing to stay at Fremont and want the lower price, you should start your bidding in Fremont, then try the strip. The rebids they are referring to are other zones you will not get, I think, so you can add them without worrying about ending up somewhere else. You have plenty of time though, too. You only need to do the rebids if you are trying to get something more toward the last minute and want to be able to raise your bid several times in one day.
  10. Yep, that is it. Thanks. I just didn't look hard enough and haven't used the site in a while. Has anybody compared what they "admit" people getting to some of the lowest bids that are really accepted? It seems to me they might not want to post some of the really low accepted bids...
  11. It might be the Golden Nugget? Do you want to stay on Fremont street? What does the Golen Nugget cost for a week? I'd say no and bid 75 tomorrow. You have lots of time.
  12. Sorry if this is not in the right section or if it has been discussed elsewhere... A couple of months ago, I think, Priceline sent an email that they now had a feature where you could look at various cities and see the zone, star level and accepted price of some recent bids. I looked at it quickly and commented to my wife that I was amazed they were offering this information. I haven't been making a lot of PL bids lately and forgot about it, but recently was trying to find the link on their site to this again. I didn't see anything there. I would not be surprised if they removed it. I was surprised they put it up in the first place. Has anybody seen this? Did anybody else see this? Am I just missing the link on their site?
  13. I just looked again on HOTWIRE, and if you split your stay, you can get a 2* on the north strip for $98 per night for 4 people on Sunday and Monday nights. Or you could get the 1* for $53 for those 2 nights. On saturday, a 1*, presumably the one I mentioned before, is available on the 28th for $109 on the south strip. You mention clean and quiet, I think. Generally, even in a 1* on these sites you should expect clean. Who knows about quiet. I had a 1* in the bay area a few years ago. It was a Homestead. So it was clean. But the freeway was 50 feet away...
  14. My wife and I (girlfriend at the time) did a lot of Priceline stuff after 9/11, too. I think we stayed in hotels 95% of the time for almost a year. Prior to that we were living at my mom's house, but obviously that gets old. We were able to have a lot more privacy without having to spring for a year lease and buy furniture and all that. One time we got a $20 a night bid accepted (2* Orange County, Brea/Fullerton) Those were the days! Most of the time we got $25 a night. Last year we stayed a lot in some of the same hotels, usually for $30. We moved out of our $2200 a month 2 bedroom apartment in OC, stored our stuff at my industrial business unit and prepared for a full time existence with apartment or house. We purchased a bunch of timeshare interests and live in them almost full time. We use Priceline to fill in some of the gaps. And we get free rooms and stuff from casinos and things like that. We travel a lot, so we don't have to pay to stay in OC or use our timeshare credits when we are in other places. It took a while to get up to speed, but Priceline got us by for 6 months until our timeshare reservations started kicking in. We are not limited to 7 night stays in the majority of our timeshares, but reservations need to be made 6 months to a year in advance at some places. Others are available last minute, including a resort in Vegas that is as nice as it gets. We go there all the time. For those interested, you could easily live in Vegas on timeshares...
  15. Well, if you want to do Priceline, you just don't know if you are going to have room for 4 people without bringing sleeping bags for the floor. If $120 is your upper limit for 2 rooms, go ahead and try PL for $50 or $60 for 2 rooms at a low * level and see what you get. I am not very optimistic about success with that, though. I just looked at Hotwire. I am not too familiar with Hotwire, but it appears they give the option to specify 4 people in a single room. This may limit the options, but one 1* for $72 in the south strip came up for your dates. Not sure what that would be, but if you want to have 4 people walk to the strip for under a hundred bucks, then there you go. Or for $106 you can get a 3* west of the strip for 4 people. Will you have a car? Some of these hotels have shuttles to the strip, too. In general, if you really want to do things cheap, you should ask yourself if it is important to be able to walk to the strip the entire time? Are you going to have a car so that moving hotels is a better option? Maybe you could stay on the strip one night or two. Or maybe, if you like the idea of walking to the strip, you might like to stay on one end of the strip one night and on another end another night. Lets say you did take the 1* on Hotwire for all three nights. Yea, you're on the strip, but are you going to walk to the Wynn. The strip is BIG and getting bigger. If I was on the south end of the strip and wanted to see the Wynn, I'd probably drive (or take the trolley thing they have or bus if I didn't have a car). And are you going to check out Fremont street? going to have to drive. Or the Stratosphere? I don't know what you plan to do in town or if you've been there much, so its hard to give advice. My point, though, is that if you insist on being within walking distance of the Strip, you might be consigning yourself to a borderline room which to me is silly if you are going to be jumping into your car to go see things. If you are going to have a car, I would try 2* on priceline west of the strip for 2 rooms. Start low and add the east of the strip zone then the strip zone as you raise your offer price. You can start really low and raise your bid a buck at a time and still be done with the process in a week considering you can re bid every 24 hours now.
  16. 2* Candlewood Suites 7/5/07 - 1 night 13231 49th Street North Clearwater, Florida 33762 727-573-3344 Took $40 on first bid (damn it! should have started lower...) $12.29 taxes and fees
