I had been trying for days to get a decent rate on a hotel in North Fort Lauderdale for this night, watching Hotwire and Priceline Express Deals and bidding with Priceline. But I was alarmed to see the rates for this holiday weekend night go higher and higher and see my options steadily dwindle. So, the night before I needed the room, I decided to start looking in Boca, too -- 20 miles away. This seemed like a comparatively good rate on a great hotel ("95% recommended! Amazing!" Hotwire said), so I grabbed it. So, I just learned an important lesson: not to panic, not even at the last minute during a holiday weekend.

I have made a cancelable booking directly with the hotel, because at the moment Hotwire would save me no more than $10 a night, once the fees are factored in -- and I'd be tempted to buy Hotwire's travel insurance, which would bring everything even. The mobile version of Hotwire show the first part of a review that says, "Right at the central train station, many busses and trains and restaurants and services conve..." From all the evidence, it sounds to me like the Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel, though that would hardly be called a boutique. What do you think? Thank you!

First, I tried bidding to land the 4* Mayfair, because both Priceline Express Deals and Hotwire had a hotel matching its description for $120 a night. Using free rebids and adding the Coral Gables zone, I bid up to $110 but did not have success. Next, I tried for the 3.5* Aloft Miami Dadeland, because it wasn't too far away and because of its free parking -- a big selling point! It had a lowest advertised rate for these nights of $135. I bid $95, added the Coral Gables zone and went to $100, but I got nothing. And here's where I made my mistake: I added Coconut Grove and bid $103, landing the Courtyard by Marriott. It's a great hotel, but it was advertising a AAA rate of just $104 for one of my two nights. I should have bid $95 or lower before adding Coconut Grove, because I saved only about $25 by using Priceline. The hotel also charges a steep $29 a night for parking. But we loved the location and had a view of Biscayne Bay, even if the room was rather small. Earlier today, the best 4* rate in this particular zone was $164. So, when I searched again and the $118 price popped up, I grabbed it immediately. The lowest available rate on Hyatt's website for these nights is $219. Well, it has been nearly a month since I first contacted Priceline about this issue, and I am still waiting for my 20% refund. This is very surprising from a company that typically seems rather efficient. I have received two follow-up emails claiming they are still "researching" my partial refund "request" -- which wasn't really a request on my part, but rather a customer service representative's offer, which I accepted. My fear is they'll drag the matter out until this trip has been completed, but I don't plan to let it go.

I had wanted to add Price.line's Central Park South zone, but it came with an extra $100 hotel fee. I'll have to look around on your site to see if there's any discussion of those extra hotel fees. Great advice -- thank you! I did contact Priceline via chat and was offered the choice of a 20% refund or the cancellation of my reservation. Because the hotel is in a good location, the TripAdvisor reviews are OK and I'm not terribly fussy, I opted for the partial refund. I guess that effectively makes my winning rate $60!

WOW -- how did THAT happen??? I bid for a 3* hotel, and my confirmation from Priceline shows the hotel as a 3* property. But you're correct -- the rating has now been changed to 2.5*! Do you know if I have grounds for a complaint or some type of remediation? I will contact Priceline about this. I bid for a 3* hotel and I expect to be staying in a 3* hotel when I make this trip next month. It seems to me that they ought to allow me to bid again.

Note that the correct zone is called Westport-Fairfield, not Lower Fairfield County/Norwalk-Westport. Norwalk is a separate zone now. I wasn't able to change it above. First, I checked the PRICELINE EXPRESS Deals and noticed a 3* available for these nights with amenities including free parking, free breakfast and free in-room Internet for $91. I also saw a 4* with far fewer amenities for considerably more. Sorry, I didn't make a note of the price for that, but it may have been $134. I started by bidding $75 for a 4*. I noticed that, in addition to PRICELINE's taxes and fees, I would be charged an extra $15 per night by the hotel. This was described as a "resort fee." In Connecticut?! Probably an energy surcharge -- and not very enticing. My $75 bid was rejected. I added the Stamford zone as a free rebid and raised my bid to $80 for a 4*, but that also was rejected. Because I wanted a hotel in the Fairfield area, where I'm traveling for my nephew's high school graduation, I went back to the Priceline home page and started over, aiming for a 3.5* hotel, bidding $75 and only in the Westport-Fairfield zone. This time, the annoying $15 "resort fee" was not included in my expected final price. But my bid was rejected. I added the 3* category, stayed with $75 -- and I won! My total with taxes and fees was $182.30, about $40 less than if I had taken the $91 PRICELINE EXPRESS Deal. The lowest rate for these night's on the hotel's own website is a AAA rate of $121.49 per night. The hotel looks a little dowdy. But it does promise free breakfast, free in-room Internet and free parking. I began my bidding through the PRICELINE widget on this site.

So, when I got to the hotel, the front desk tried to charge me $10 for parking. I protested -- said that I booked through a site that advertised the hotel as having free parking -- and the front desk clerk said he would waive the fee. I am keeping a close eye on my credit card account. So far, the hotel's $25 "hold" is still there.

Hot.wire had a 4* beach resort available for $89, and PRICELINE EXPRESS Deals had one for $87. So, I started my bidding at $69 and immediately got a $17 counteroffer, to bid $86. Instead, I added the downtown zone and tried for $71. Then, I used one free rebid at $73 and another that gave me the win at $75. With taxes and fees, my total is $91.59.
