Hotels in Brussels tend to fill during the week when Eurocrats are around. The weekends are the slow period, thus the super low rates like $40.

I personally didn't want the hotel because of the long walk (1 mile) to the closest metro. My wife liked the romantic nature of the hotel at the end of the beach. She proposes that we'll walk along the beach at the end of the day back to the hotel. Taxis are relatively cheap in Barcelona so we'll probably splurge there too. From what I've read, the hotel is geared toward adults and there are very few families staying there. That's very appealing considering this is only our 2nd weekend alone since having kids 8 years ago. Romance + no screaming kids trumps convenience in this case! I'll write a review after we return.

Your dates are mid-week, which is more difficult to find a cheap room in Brussels. If there is any kind of European Union function going on, you can forget about finding a decent room under $200/night. It is summer though, so a large-scale function is unlikely. If you are willing to switch hotels into your stay, try splitting the dates.

For Mayfair-Soho, that is a great price, and if you did overbid, it was certainly not more than a few dollars.

I won both the NH Atlanta and City Center for friends so I didn't stay there, but I saw their rooms. Briefly (no time or qualification to do a full review): NH Atlanta: This is truly the city center and in the heart of all kinds of tourist activities. The room was tiny. No problem for my friend who stayed alone. Nice, helpful staff. NH City Center: Nice location in the ritzy shopping area. The room was bigger than the one at the Atlanta.

This is your basic Holiday Inn Express experience. Clean, decent, and good value. Rooms come with a double bed and double pull-out sofa. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is wireless internet for a fee, and a computer with pay internet connection in the lobby. My wife and kids ate at the restaurant and were not impressed. Breakfast is included in the Hotwire rate and was a decent continental offering, including croissants, pastries, bread, cheese, canned fruit slices, whole fresh fruit, cold cereal, hot drinks and juices. The downside is the location. It is an industrial area with nothing of interest. The North Acton tube is adjacent to the hotel and you can be in central London in 20 minutes, or Notting Hill in less than 10 with the same line. I read in TripAdvisor about 'unsavory types' in the neighborhood, but we never felt unsafe. Across the street is a Tesco Express, a Lebanese cafe, and a pub. You can't ask for a better area. It is a 2 minute walk to the Grand Place - make sure you go in the evening to catch the light show. Ask the front desk for details. You are also a 4-5 minute walk to the central station metro. From there it is a direct metro to Heysel (expo center). The hotel has a very good reputation.

I booked the room for a friend. She arrived late and as all other rooms were full, she got one of the nicest suites I've ever seen. This hotel is not currently listed in the Hotwire hotel list.
