  2. You were right. It's funny, this place gets basically good reviews on Tripadvisor at 2.5 stars. The Alexis Park Resort is 3 stars and gets some frightening reviews. Maybe if traffic isn't too bad coming back from Disneyland, I can do a little kayaking?
  3. Thanks! Would the Aston Montelago be a 3 star? I thought that the Lake Las Vegas places were nicer than 2.5? Or are the places out there downgraded because the casino out there closed? My kids are 12 and 9, so we like a little extra space. And we like a fridge and a coffee maker. We'll have a car, so I can drop my wife off at a Locals casino in Henderson. We pass through Las Vegas on the way to other places. We are just staying in Las Vegas on our way to Disneyland. On the way there, I am putting in a bid on what might be the Grandview or could be the Cancun or Tahiti Village, $72, Aug 10-11. But the price on 3-star, condo, south strip goes up to $106 on our way back (Aug 15-16). I found this 2.5 star out in the boondocks for $79, and I was just wondering about it. Maybe Spring Hill Suites or another chain property?
  4. I am also passing through Las Vegas with my kids. I found that on Hot.wire, if I filtered Amenities to Suites, I got the largest selection. If you have a car and are willing to be off the Strip, you can find a "Condo" or a suite for less money than a regular room on the Strip. And the Condo or Suite will have a coffee maker and a refrigerator, which the Strip room probably won't have.
  5. It's the other end of Nevada. But Hot.wire said the last person got the Hilton Garden Inn in Elko. And we got the Best Western. Not that much difference between the two, I can't imagine. These days, with two megacorporations owning most of the Strip, and lots of places off the strip; you're going to end up in the same place with a different paint color on the walls and different uniforms on the dealers.

  7. Oops, sorry about that. $86. Looking back at my original message, wow, am I whiny or what? It's a nice place, clean, big pool, good breakfast, small but good weight room. What's up with Elko anyway? The hotel rates go up on the weekend as badly as in Las Vegas. I can see rates going up during the Basque Festival or Cowboy Poetry. What, the hottest DJ's and the biggest stars are hanging out in the Red Lion and the Stockman's?
  8. Free Breakfast Fitness Center Pool(s) Business Center Internet access Tennis Nearby No casino, lots of kids. It was full when we were there. They ran out of pool towels and bacon. No, not because I ate it all.
  9. Our hot water heater broke so we just needed a place for one night near our house. We ate more than $45 worth of food at breakfast. Free Parking Free Breakfast Free Internet Pet friendly Indoor pool(s) Fitness Center Pool(s) Business Center Self service laundry Internet access
  10. Indoor Swimming Pool Restaurant Fitness Center Epic fail! I booked this from the 12th to the 13th. Thereuare or Yellowdog, can you edit the topic?
  11. My wife and I were thinking about Park City for a Saturday night, so this is interesting to us. But the Yarrow is about a half an hour drive away from University Park and a little further from downtown SLC.

Is that in a bar or some other kind of adults only area? I know you aren't supposed to take kids to Vegas. Well, we are just passing through on the way to somewhere else. My kids love billiards and will want to play if they can.
  13. Yes, I know you are not supposed to take children to Las Vegas. But I am on my way to somewhere else, and Las Vegas is by far the cheapest place to stop. I found a 3 star condo, South Area, $72 on Expedia Unpublished, $75 on Hot.wire. I think it's the Cancun, or maybe Tahiti Village, possibly Grandview. Is there any difference in booking with one or the other? I have had good luck so far with Hot.wire. But I just booked a place in Utah that has some scary reviews, but I will just be there for one night.
  14. Amenities Free Parking, Free Breakfast, Free Internet, Airport Shuttle, Smoke Free Rooms, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Business Center, Self service laundry, Internet access Hee, hee! Airport Shuttle for the one flight per day at Cedar City's airport. My kids' school starts spring break on the 17th, so I am surprised that this was so cheap. Lots of people head from northern to southern Utah for spring break. It's close to Frontier Homestead State Park. My kids loved that place.
  15. Last year I won on Hotwire the Palms Place. I don't remember it having a self service laundry. But my wife and I drive to Las Vegas so we can overpack if we want. If you want to get technical about it, Palms Place doesn't have a casino. Palms does, though. Maybe HOTWIRE has become really creative in defining West Of Strip and this is Red Rock?
  16. Hotwire will bring up a 3 star in "Spring Valley". A quick check of Google Earth says that this seems to be a residential neighborhood with The Cliffs At Peace Canyon the only hotel nearby. Is Google Earth out of date? Or is Spring Valley a synonym for Summerlin? Hotwire says I can get a 3-star in Spring Valley but I thought that the Cliffs at Peace Canyon was nicer than that?
  17. June 18 and July 13, 2013 are US national soccer team games at Rio Tinto Stadium. These games are in Sandy, but lots of fans will stay in downtown SLC because there are more bars there.
  18. I could have sworn that I saw a thread started by a guy who ended up in the Red Rock. Maybe I'm mistaking it for something else, but I thought he had said, "I bid for 4.5 stars, west of Strip. I wanted Palms Place but I ended up at the Red Rock, which is out in the Boonies." I wanted to be out in the Boonies! That would be pretty funny; if we just sleep at Palms Place and spend most of our time at the Gold Coast, bowling and playing bingo. I was checking out another website and someone mentioned coupons for a breakfast buffet. If we book via Hotwire, do we still get the coupons? This place has free valet parking, if the other site is correct? Yeah, but I really should tip the valet, right? How much?
  19. Free Parking Casino Fitness Center Pool(s) Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Golf Nearby Tennis Nearby Spa Services I'm the only weirdo in the world who saw this and thought "Cool! I can snag the Red Rock!". I don't gamble (my wife does) but I like bowling and the Red Rock is close to good mountain biking. But the Palms probably isn't going to suck too much.
  20. Maybe I should post this in the Nevada section? But in Las Vegas, many or most of the hotels have coupon books that they hand out when you check in. They have discounts on buffets, spas, shows, etc. If we use Priceline or Hotwire for a Las Vegas hotel, will the clerk see a note that says "Don't give these Cheapskates a coupon book."? I don't care that much about the view from the room. But I'm cheap and I want a coupon book.

But I was just there for 1 night with my 2 kids and I never did ask for help. They had a coin laundry room and a tiny workout room with 2 treadmills.
  22. The Salt Lake Visitors Bureau has a list of events. The biggest events are the Summer and Winter Outdoor Retailer shows.
  23. That was a pretty good deal, considering it was the first day of UEA weekend. (That's the teacher convention weekend. Lots of people in Utah travel that weekend.) I think I ate $57 worth of bacon at breakfast.
  24. I've never stayed there. But my wife played bingo there while I went mountain biking and she & I bowled there. The areas that I saw were very nice. For some people this is a positive and for some people it's a negative. But there seemed to be a lot of children there.
