Also, although I was wary of the hotel, our stay was pretty good. Since we couldn't find anything south of $150/night anywhere else, it was worth paying what we paid. I wouldn't stay here for much more than $90/night, though. 

Pros:

Really friendly and helpful staff, who did not treat us like second-class citizens because we booked on hotwire

Good location (about 10 minutes drive from OB and Gaslamp)

Lots of restaurants within walking distance, including a Phil's BBQ that always had a line around the building, and a DuPars that was excellent

Rooms had been mostly refreshed, and our room was huge

Cons:

The neighborhood was a little sketchy (it was next to a Home Depot that had day laborers hanging out all day and a rescue mission)

The rooms were motel style, with the sink outside of the bathroom

The flimsy curtains did not keep the sun out -- If you are staying here, ask for a room that does not border Kemper

This hotel is on your hotwire list as a 2.5* hotel, but hotwire has apparently upgraded it to 3*. I'm a little disappointed, as some reviews have been terrible, but I'll give it a chance. When I booked, amenities listed were:

After approximately 8 million attempts to get a hotel in downtown Los Angeles on a weeknight, I finally ended up getting the Luxe City Center Hotel. Never been there, but we're going to an event at the Staples Center, so it looks perfectly situated.

ETA: My bad, Priceline actually lists this as a 4* hotel, but I got it when I was bidding on 3.5*. I can't figure out how to edit the title.

Thanks for the advice about booking direct. I check out the hotel website to see if it's worth my while to book the other two nights there, or if I should book on HOTWIRE.

Thereuare, I booked from 5/6-5/7 and it was $113. Total with taxes and fees it is $132.56.

ETA: After looking at booking direct for 5/7-5/9, Hotwire was still a better deal. I got those nights for $115/night. Total with taxes and fees for those two nights is $262.69.

The same hotel appears, for the same price, for 5/6-5/9 and I've been trying to figure it out. There's no tripadvisor rating information, and it does not appear when you look into a vacation package. I'm stumped. Hoping you'll be the guinea pig who books it. :)

No free rebid zones for Florence so I've been bidding for five days trying to get a four star.

Day 1: $69 ($106 counteroffer)

I'm not that excited b/c I'm not sure this hotel qualifies as a 4* (some sites give it 3*, some 4). At least it's somewhat near the train station (if nothing else).

Yeah, I wasn't 100% jazzed about the Hilton -- I was holding out hope that I'd be the first to get a different 5* in Venice! And I wouldn't have minded a 4*, but we are leaving the country tomorrow and I wanted to wrap up the details. The Hilton may not be the best location, but the hotel looks pretty nice anyway. Given that my backup was a 4* for US$232/night, I'm pleased.

Unfortunately Venice only has one free rebid zone for a 5*, so it took me awhile to get this bid. I started at $131 and then $139 (day 1), $147 and then $153 (day 2), $159 and $166 (day 3), and then $172 today (accepted first bid).

Total cost is $392.68.

Hope this makes sense.

Incidentally I had tried also to bid 4* in Venice, up to $151, and was rejected. There are no free rebids in Venice for 4*, so I started at $131 (day 1), upped it to $141 (day 2), then $151 (day 3). All rejected with no counteroffers.

Excuse me if this has already been noted, but per the Hotwire Vacation Package, the Red Lion on 5th Avenue (Seattle Downtown) has been upgrade to 3.5*. Amenities: Restaurant(s), Fitness Center, Golf Nearby.

I guess Hotwire just can't decide whether this is a 3* or a 3.5* property...

First bid $45 on Tucson East. Rejected.

Then bid $48 adding Tucson North. Accepted.

Risky because Tucson North is a resort area, but I figured there would be a 0% chance of me getting a resort property for $48/night. And if we did, I would not complain at all.

I decided to branch out to Costa Mesa-Irvine and bid up to $61 (starting at $45, in $3 increments, until the last bid, which was a $4 increase). Rejected.

I'm going to keep trying. I am thinking about splitting my bid, but I want to stay at the same place Thurs and Fri night, so I don't know how much good splitting would do.

So I've been trying for the past week or so to bid on a Disneyland area hotel for the weekend of January 18-21 and I'm getting nowhere! I'm accustomed to getting a hotel in this area for the $45-60 range, but have gone all the way up to $75 to no avail.

So, a few equestions I guess:

1) Should I start branching out to other zones? Which zone is the most convenient to the park?

2) Should I try to split my bid? How should I split?

3) Should I raise my bid? I'm reluctant to go much higher for this area, but I checked Hotwire and it's Disney-area hotels range from $113/night to $269/night (!)

4) What the heck is going on in Anaheim that weekend?

The odd thing is that I couldn't even get a 4* for under $100 that weekend but I got the Venetian for $130. I don't know how much more I would have had to bid to get a 4*, but for less than $30 extra I'll take a 5*.

After three separate failed bids of up to $100 / night for a 4* hotel for that same weekend, I decided to up the ante and see if I could get the Venetian.

So after I bid, I looked up the hotel to find out if I could book Thursday night direct. It's offered at $300/night. So I tried the Priceline Add A Night feature, but for whatever reason ended up trying to add the night at $65, which was summarily rejected. I want to keep trying to add a night, but I'm wondering if it was a one-shot deal and it won't ever let me try to add a night onto this bid again. (I also posted this question on the main board).

Anyway, used the SB link, and wanted to say thanks to board again (and the intrepid soul who bid on this same weekend a couple of days before me).

Is the add a night feature a one shot deal?

I booked a room on Priceline for a Friday and Saturday night stay, and wanted to add Thursday. I knew I'd have to bid more for the Thursday than I paid for the other nights, but when I tried to add it either it wouldn't let me change my bid or I didn't think it would because I bid the same amount I had for the other two nights. Of course, it was rejected.

I've checked my reservation again to try to add another night and it won't let me now. PL "help" says that Add A Night is available only when "You have not already requested additional nights for this trip."

So have I blown it? Has anybody on this Board had a similar experience?

I wanted to stay in Union Square for this weekend. This is a little further afield than I would have preferred, but it's gotten good reviews and I got a smoking deal, so I can't complain.

I find this site immensely helpful, and this bid was particularly aided by the discussion about why bidding on a 3* in San Francisco isn't the best option. Thanks again.

This place is a typical 3* hotel - not awful but not spectacular. The thing that stands out about this hotel, however, is the poor treatment we received from the staff. The front desk staff neglected to give me a parking pass, even though I told them I had a car and asked where to park. I didn't find out that I needed a "pass" until I was trying to leave the lot and the attendant tried to charge me the full rate for parking. Also, perhaps because some baseball teams stay here during the season, the hotel employs what can only be described as an overzealous security staff, one of whom targetted our group and twice threatened to "kick us out" of the hotel. I could get into specifics, but suffice it to say, we are all well-behaved professionals in our 30s and were not doing anything to deserve such treatment. My complaints fell on deaf ears. As a consequence of those encounters, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that I will avoid this place at all costs in the future.

With that caveat, so long as you don't make eye contact with the belligerent security staff, the hotel is good because it has a Disneyland shuttle and is a hop-skip-and-a-jump from the Big A (or whatever it's called these days). I was, however, unimpressed with the rooms - the carpet was worn, the bathroom was small and the t.v. had seen better days.

Also, I think it's ridiculous that parking is $8/day for guests, even though the hotel is surrounded by empty shopping center parking lots.

Went through SavingsBarn. Very pleased w/ this deal (especially since the hotel has a shuttle to DLand). The only beef I have is that parking is $8 / day. I am going to do some research to see if there is parking for free nearby.
