If being on the beach is your goal, then Hotwire may be the better alternative for you. It will likely cost you a little more than Priceline, but one of their icons shows if the hotel is on the beach or not (make sure you understand the icons: one is "near beach" and one is "on beach"). It's probably at least worth taking a look for comparison purposes; then you can consider whether you'd like to try for cheaper and hope the hotel is on/close to the beach, or pay a little more and be assured the property will be on the beach (based upon Hotwire's icons). Hopefully somebody with a little more knowlege of the area will add to this info.

VERY observant!! Zbenye, i imagine you are aware of this, but i will mention it for others reading... the tax rate is based upon what Priceline paid for the room, NOT the amount of your winning bid. This is why we like to see the taxes posted from winning bids... so that we can see what Priceline's actual cost is on the room, and most likely their cost will be the lowest acceptable price for a winning bid. For more detail on computing taxes to determine Priceline's cost, see this thread: COMPUTING PRICELINE'S COST Given that the tax rate for this hotel is 14.05%, it appears that the hotel has multiple Priceline rates, one of which is $31 (4.36/nite taxes), another of which is $32 (4.50/nite taxes). There could be others as well. Great info to know when bidding this zone, so if there are re-bids or time available it pays to bid $31 and then up it to $32 (and NOT higher, as re-bids are usually recommended at prices higher than adding $1). If no rebids available or time, then it would be recommended to just bid 'safer' at $32, and not try for the extra $1 savings.

You have to register with them, but i wouldn't say that they're spam oriented. I get about one email per month from them, usually announcing restaurant deals and/or special theme dinners. Also, if you sign up, they will send you a certificate near your birthday good for $50 off dinner for 2 people. I believe they ask you to mention the coupon when making a reservation, and they only allow a certain number of reservations using the discount per nite (this used to be the case, don't know if it still applies). PLEASE!!! do not make a reservation at multiple restaurants for the same nite. Not only is this a personal gripe of mine, but it's not fair to the restaurant, and not fair to other diners that might not be able to get a table because of the one you reserved and won't be using. My favorite restaurant in the list is Brasserie 8 1/2, and i recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

With the money i've saved using Priceline, it would certainly be more worthwhile than some of the other things i learned in school! As an example of the Priceline/Hotwire Zones, with Hotwire, there was no way to find Fort Mitchel using their drop down menu, so as a user of Hotwire i might think that they don't offer any hotels in that area and then look elsewhere. With Priceline, if i put "Fort Mitchel, KY" in the search box, it would tell me, "Fort Mitchel is located within the Cincinnati area..." OR "We don't offer any hotels in the Fort Mitchel area, but we do offer hotels in the nearby zones listed below, please select a zone..." At least with Priceline they prompt you with the nearby area and show alternative zones that you may not have considered, while Hotwire leaves you in the dark if you can't get past the drop down menu list.

Thanks, but this example brings up a good point (either Hotwire's drop-down menu isn't a good system ORi'm not too bright :) ) The whole time i searched for this zone i was looking under the "F's" in Hotwire's hotel drop-down list, more specifically the "Fort ____", but didn't see either of the above. The only way to find this area, is by looking under Cinicinnati, OHIO... not exactly intuitive if you're not that familiar with the area! Howire should either make their list more complete (so that the drop-down list includes 'sub-zones' as well) or go to a system where the user types the city and/or state they want. My guess would be that they don't offer the price guarantee on airlines because their is no price stability within the airlines and prices change frequently throughout the day, while hotel prices are relatively stable. My personal opinion is tha this stems from a bigger problem, which is that the airlines have basically stopped trying to differentiate themselves from other carriers based upon service. As the airlines don't see what separates themselves from each other, neither do their consumers, and they therefore are all forced to match their competitor's price decreases and sales (ie- one airline in an area reduces fares on a given route, all their competitors match it). This creates price instability and wild fluctuations, which is also the reasons i also hate buying airline tickets... nothing irritates me more than buying anything and then seeing the price lower a few days later. This price fluctuation doesn't occur in the hotel industry, as hotel's DO try to differentiate themselves from one another based upon service (even within the same quality levels). Some brands are consistantly cleaner than others, others offer free breakfast (with varying levels of effort put into the breakfast... a further attempt to diiferentiate themselves), free morning newspapers are offered at some chains, some have free business centers, others give free internet access, etc, etc. Although i've probably flown more in the last year than ever before, i'm not a frequent flyer by any definition. I do however, recommend and try to take JetBlue whenever possible due to their in-seat live televisions... this is an example of an airline that DOES try to differentiate themselves based upon service. I'd even be willing to pay a little more for that service as it makes my flight more enjoyable. If more airlines would come up with ways to make themselves different, they wouldn't have to compete soley on price. However, most of them are not that innovative, and i suppose that if JetBlue continues with its current success, the next 'major' move by most airlines will be to install tv sets in their own seats, merely copying the next guy instead of trying to come up with their own ideas to make them different. Then the cycle will just continue, as they once again will "all be the same". PS- although all of the above is not PRICELINE's fault (or concern), i think they could help their own cause and keep complaints like the one above by an "irresponsible Priceline <airline> user" to a minimum if an airline bid was for the net ticket price and didn't have all the taxes, fees, miscellaneous charges added on afterwards

Although a request for a refrigerator is common, espicially at higher end hotels, it could be difficult to "guarantee" when using Priceline or Hotwire. It will be interesting to see if Hotwire tells you that you're "safe" or not if you only select a hotel with the kitchenette icon. When you bid on Priceline for the 4*, were you just taking the risk that if your bid was accepted that the hotel would have a refrigerator available, or was this an after-thought that you hadn't considered at the time you placed your bid. Let us know what Hotwire's response is. Also, Hotwire has pretty good customer service via telephone. You can call them and speak to a live person, usually with little or no waiting, if you don't want to wait for an email reply. If you speak with somebody via telephone, i'd ask them point blank if the kitchenette icon guarantees a refrigerator in the room. If you get a favorable response, ask for an email confirming such, or at the very least write down the name of the person you spoke with.

I will add that in the email that Priceline sent, there was a link that you clicked on that took you to a 'special' Hotel Bidding screen. This special screen indicated that they would add $10 to the price you bid. For those of us that weren't going to use it, we put the link in a post here so that others could use it. The link contains a code that makes it unique, and that's how Priceline knows if it's been used already or not (it can only be used for one successful bid... if you place a bid and the bid is rejected, the bonus money will apply for the next bid placed thru that link). Hope that explains it better.

Given the circumstances it looks like you did great and you researched it well, but more importantly, how's the coffee there? Perhaps you or somebody else that knows the area could assist with this (as i know nothing about the geography there, except i remember the beautiful mountains the one time i was there). There is a "Delta" section of Vancouver, but there also appears to be a Delta hotel chain throughout Canada. I categorized this hotel in "Vancouver", but just want to make sure i got it right. 1. You are out of re-bids. 2. It all depends upon your comfort level. Personally, i would sooner book directly with the Wellesley website ($89... yes i'd pay the extra $10 for the right to cancel) IF that rate allows me a full refund if i cancel (website doesn't say, you'll have to call and ask). I would continue to try Priceline up to the point where my back-up reservation is no longer 100% refundable (or any penalty would offset the Priceline savings).

KenC4x4, The two 3* hotels we have seen come up in the Downtown area are The Embassy Suites and the Marriott. The Embassy Suites, for this time of year, usually requires a $75 bid via Priceline ($57 is often a winning bid as well, but NOT during high season, which this is). We've seen an instance where the Marriott was rejected at $78 (although one wouldn't know if there was something 'special' in town, like a convention, that would inflate prices). Given the above, i would think that you would need to bid at least $75 to have a chance at a 3* property, and that's where i would place my first bid. Only you can decide if you want to spend this much or would rather go with the Wellesley Suites thru conventional means. I will add however, that the Embassy Suites gets GREAT reviews, and based upon a post here allows free parking during your cruise but charges ($10/nite) the nite you actually stay in the hotel. If this is important to you, you can call the hotel before to confirm before you bid. You state that the Amerisuites is sold out, so i don't think that you will have success getting this 2.5* property via Priceline (but probably NOT a good idea to use as a re-bid area, as it could result in a big overbid if Priceline has inventory for some reason). I did a quick search on Expedia and saw the Wellesley for about $79 as an "Expedia Special Rate" but this should NOT be used as a back-up as this rate comes with a cancellation fee. I don't know if this is where you were thinking of booking a back-up, but make sure your back up is 100% refundable. A little long winded, but the bottom line is that i think you will be successful if you bid $75 for 3* Downtown. There's even a reported "win" at the Embassy Suites which covers the date you are looking for: REPORTED WIN (ignore the fact that the 'win' is in British pounds... it's equivalent to $75 US) Feel free to ask any questions regarding the above and keep us updated on your progress.

Congratulations, pretty soon you'll be giving out advice along with the rest of us. Actually, you may never book a hotel thru conventional methods again! Taxes at this hotel are 11.416% (taken directly from Marriott's website) Taxes Paid / Tax Rate = Priceline's Cost $6.74 / .11416 = $59 So you think you did 'ok'? I'd say you did EXCELLENT.... and less than 1/2 the cost of the best rate you found. Enjoy your trip.

The star ratings between agencies are frequently different, and should probably be ignored as a criteria for comparision (ie- use the amenities to gain insight as to which hotels are being offered, NOT the star rating... but i like the way you're thinking!!). However, as BurBunny suggests, using a search on Expedia for 3* and above should be sufficient for including the Hotwire 4.5* hotel you are trying to guess. I've heard stories of the star ratings being different by as much as 1.5 stars, although that is in extreme cases and it's usually not more than a 1 star difference.
