Does anyone have any insight into the PL counter-offer; specifically when you bid and the bid is rejected, but PL makes a counteroffer?

For example: You bid $65. PL rejects your offer, but says encourages you to increase your bid $17 to "win" a hotel.

I have never gone for this. I always feel that I must be close to what they will take (slightly above $65 in this case) so they are trying to maximize their profit by trying to get me to bite on a price that is well above their winning threshold.

Any thoughts?

I've had winning bids for $1 more than the previous bid that received a 2 digit counteroffer. I've also had later bids of the counteroffer amount rejected. The only useful information that a counteroffer provides is that there IS inventory for the zone/dates sought.

I usually don't accept their counteroffer, unless I don't have time to rebid.

JUst happened a couple weeks ago, I bid on a 3.5* $60 that usually retails for $149. They rejected the $60, and counter-offered to add another $17, for a total of $77.

Decided to wait the 24 hrs. as there was no possible rebid zones in that area that I can try again right away. I bid $65 the next day and got it!
