Hotel Quality Differing room quality within same hotel

Does anyone know, or experienced, that rooms won thru Priceline or Hotwire are of lower quality (i.e., older) than other rooms in same hotel? We won a Hyatt in FLL a couple years ago, and placed in the older, "not near as nice" section vs. the Tower. Not horrible, but certainly not what I would expect for a 4* (or was it 3* then??). Just curious.
