johnvegasgo
Looking for a 3* or 4* place around $100 per night. We'd like to be near the strip, but if we could get a lower rate, we're willing to be 5-10 miles away. I'm booking for next week, but the rates are high. The best Express Deal I could find was $171 per night (most likely South Point Hotel). On Hot Wire, the same story $172 per night is the lowest. I thought last minute booking is supposed to yield low rates? Any suggestions? Link to comment
thereuare
Welcome to BetterBidding! If PRICELINE EXPRESS / HOTWIRE are in the $175 area you're goal of $100 is not realistic. 1 hour ago, johnvegasgo said: I thought last minute booking is supposed to yield low rates? Not necessarily... 1) If hotels are now near full occupancy then why would they lower rates... better to keep them high for those who still do not have a reservation and need a room for the nite. 2) even if a hotel is at 50% occupancy, they have staffed the hotel as such... even if they could somehow generate enough demand to be at 100% occupancy, they wouldn't likely do so as they don't have the staff to handle it 3) a week before check-in price is not going to be that much of a factor driving demand. Even if a hotel could lower rates at half off, how many people who were not already considering travel to this area for these dates could (or would) suddenly pick-up and go because there is now a good deal on a hotel? (not to mention staffing issues outlined in #2 above). Although you're likely solely focused in these dates of travel, the hotel knows they can only do so much to increase demand for these dates at this late stage of the game, and instead focus on adjusting rates for the months ahead, where adjusting rates can have an impact on demand and where they still have an opportunity to staff the hotel appropriately (and leave rates for this weekend high for those walk-in customers who still don't have a place to sleep for the nite) We have seen much less lowering or rates at the last minute in the last 3-5 years as the hotel industry has had a strong comeback from the recessionary times of 5-10 years ago. In regards to your specific stay above... Is your budget flexible at all? If you stay further out from the strip do you need/want a property with a casino or do you just need a place to lay your head at the end of the day? The latter. I'm not much of a gambling person. I'm visiting Vegas for the shows. Link to comment
johnvegasgo
I checked Express Deals for earlier in the week (July 25 - 26) and they have very low rates ($25 - $50). Is it possible that if I wait until July 25 - 26 to book for July 28-29-30, the rates will be lower? Link to comment
thereuare
It is not unusual for weekend rates in Las Vegas to be 2x-3x mid-week (Sun-Thur) rates and that is likely the reason for the price difference you're seeing above between, not because one set of dates is 3 days away and the other set of dates is 7 days away. As well, starting on July 30th are two conferences, one with 50K attendees and the other with 44K attendees, many of which will arrive the nite before, and that is another contributing factor to the high rates you're seeing (and there could also be other events taking place during your dates: concerts, MMA, boxing, etc. which would all increase demand and hotel rates, although nearly 100K conference attendees is more than enough to see an increase in rates).
