Priceline Hotel: Resort Fees for NYC hotels

Welcome to BetterBidding!

An increasing number of NYC hotels have begun to charge resort fees, but fortunately the majority still do not.

When you place your bid, after selecting the zones, star rating, bid price, etc. PRICELINE shows you a page asking you to confirm all of your details before submitting your bid.  On this page is a line item that shows you the maximum resort fee that you could possibly be required to pay based upon the star rating/zones that you have selected.

If you need to have a better sense of your total cost before making your purchase, HOTWIRE and PRICELINE EXPRESS both have been doing a good job at showing approximate resort fees for the specific hotel you are about to purchase... it's not 100% guaranteed that any resort fee will be shown, but it has been 'pretty good' of late (combined with our help in guessing the hotel offered you can usually have a good handle on if a resort fee will be charged, and if so, how much)

Do you have specific travel dates in mind?  If so, what are you looking for in terms of star rating, zone(s), and/or budget (per nite before fees/taxes)?

Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.

Do you mean "Midtown East" are you are referring to multiple zones along the East side of Manhattan?

To avoid any confusion, please clarify exactly which zones, by PRICELINE name, you're looking to stay within for this trip.

What is your expected budget for this trip?  Is your budget tight in the sense that any resort fee charged by the hotel will make/break the budget and exclude it from the possibilities?

Hello,

Based upon the Priceline website, this would be Midtown East or Central Park South, even Times Square-Theatre District... I understand not all hotels charge the resort fee but those that do charge, what is the average max amount-is it usually in the the 20-30 range.

As far as budget I am looking at 150 to 175, for 3 or 3.5 star hotel, unsure if that expectation is feasible or not, and what hotel names are classed in that 3 and 3.5 star range?

Thank you.

At current rates for your dates above i think you're likely looking at the $160-$185/nite range before taxes/fees.

If you want to get an idea of resort fees you can use the BiddingHelper.com and search for 'New York City, NY' and enter your dates.

In the bidding page select 3* Times Square and click the PREVIEW BID button

On the next page you'll see Hotel Fee:US$ 21.00

... so now you know the most you could be charged for a 3* in this zone would be $21/nite resort fee

Click the BACK button and go thru all the different star ratings and zone combinations you're considering.

Any average is going to be skewed given the small number (although increasing) number of hotels that charge resort fees.  For example, if only two hotels in a zone charge a resort fee, one at $5 and one at $40, is a resort fee of $28 really representative of anything meaningful?  It becomes even less meaningful when you consider that maybe there are 15 hotels in the zone and only two charge resort fees.  However, if you want an answer, i wouldn't argue with anyone who said the resort fees are typically in the $15-$35 range, but again, i wouldn't put too much meaning into this given the small sample size relative to the number of hotels, as well as the wide range between the lower and upper endpoints.

Thank you, is  the Taxes and Service Fees line item refer to the 'resort fee' being included also on biddinghelper.com?

HOTWIRE will list an approximate ("estimated") resort fee during check-out (as a separate item, not as part of "taxes/fees") and on the detail page for the listing. PRICELINE EXPRESS listings will show resort fee (if there is one) during check-out. ("Additional Mandatory Fee", not as part of taxes/fees). PRICELINE bidding will list a resort fee during the check-out process if a hotel with a resort fee is a possibility.

There are certainly FAR fewer hotels in NYC with resort fees than say, Vegas. However, as thereuare noted, hotels charging these fees have increased over the last 4-5 years or so. HOTWIRE and PRICELINE EXPRESS do have the positive of a listing listing a resort fee or not and being able to see right away whether or not a hotel charges one.

Please keep us updated and let us know if you have additional questions.
