I'll be glad to share any deals I get in the future!  :)  I would prefer to stick to the Times Square or Midtown vicinity because I am taking a friend who has never been to NYC and I know she will enjoy the area. So TSN or TSS, Midtown East, or Central Park South would all work if the price was right.  I would prefer to keep under $200 for a 4* to 5* hotel.

Although not in the zones you mention, the following are generally considered to be centrally located and get great reviews:

 

5* Chelsea for $204/nite with:

Pets Allowed, Restaurant, Free Internet, Fitness Center

==> best guess would be The NoMad Hotel

 

4* Rockefeller Center - Bryant Park for $192/nite with:

Pets Allowed, Restaurant, Free Internet, Business Center

==> Cassa Hotel 45th Street New York would be my guess here

Best guess/comments for each:

==> not certain, but if you're considering 5* hotels for this trip do you really want a hotel with only a 3.5/5.0 TA rating?

Thought I'd better update before I start my next quest. I ended up being given the gift of lodging in the form of Hyatt gift cards, so I did not use HOTWIRE or PRICELINE for my trip in August. About to pick your brains again for info for a trip in February!  :)   Thank you again for all the help!
