Hi, First time Chicago tourist looking to stay downtown.  I think I want either "millenium park - the loop - grant park" or "magnificent mile - river north area" although i'm open to suggestions too.

what would prices be like for these areas, either 3*-4* hotels for a 4 night stay starting Aug 4?

I think there's a possibility of a win at the 4* level, but it would likely be close to the top end of your budget ($140-150), but you can certainly try lower first in the hopes of an unexpected win. I'd really try to focus on the River North-NMA area, as I think there are some possibilities in the Millennium Park area that aren't optimal from a location standpoint for tourists.

I'm very familiar with the city - let me know if you have any city questions at all.

Aug 3->Aug 7

4* (Magnificent Mile - River North)  at $130/night - Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago

I think the Priceline.com area is named differently than the BetterBidding.com area.  (Magnificent Mile - River North)

Also, my dates ended up changing (mon->fri instead of tues->sat)

Unsuccessful attempts:

I started bidding from $100->$125/night for a 4* hotel in both the North Michigan Ave - River North area and the Millennium park - loop - grant park area

I took a break, and when I came back to bidding I read AaronJB's advice about sticking to the River North area.

I then bid on 3.5* hotels from $90->$110/night

I then bid on 3* hotels from $80->$100/night

Question:

i will be driving into town and then parking, probably for most of my trip (hopefully most things within walking distance)

obviously easiest to leave at the hotel, but is there a somewhat close, safe, lot close by that would save me significant money?

like, i'll park it a couple blocks away if it'll end up saving me $40.  but i'm not going to want to take a train 45 minutes to my car. :)

Congrats on your success. :)

Nice deal for this property, which couldn't be in a better location right on Michigan Ave.

Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.

Enjoy your stay.

Unfortunately, parking is extremely expensive in the city.

It's a bit of a walk from the Allerton, but Navy Pier is an option:
Standard parking rates at Navy Pier (April 1, 2015 – October 31, 2015)

$22 Monday – Thursday
$25 Friday – Sunday

Valid at Navy Pier Garages only, 600 E. Grand Avenue. Published garage rates are valid for a 24-hour period starting from the time stamped on the ticket when the car entered the garage. Cars parked beyond the 24 hours will be subject to additional rates.
