Priceline Hotel: NYC 4* - Aug 3-5 strategy help

Hey this is my first time using priceline since finding a hotel under $200 in nyc is driving me batty.

Any help with a strategy would be most appreciated. I've read the re-bidding stuff, but im not 100% on which areas are best for me.

Central Park South looks ideal (wifey likes nature over noise), but Midtown West, Upper East Side, Times Square might be fine for us too (as long as we can sleep).

Are those 4 areas good areas to base my bidding strategy?

My price range is $150/night max, and would love 4* or higher, but am not sure what to start my bidding at.

Thanks for any help!

I think you answered your own question ;)

Central Park is a nice area but when bidding 4* is the Hudson Hotel a possible outcome and they are "famous" for small rooms even by NYC standard. You might want to take a look at this hotel and decide if you want to include CPS in your bidding strategy. I would also suggest that you include Midtown East in your bidding to increase your chances.

You're looking at an expensive time for NYC. I'm pretty sure that $150/night wont fly for a 4* property when looking at your dates. I would say that you're closer to $240/night + tax/fee's if you want to go 4*. Can you increase your budget or do you want to bid for a lower star rating?

Let us know your thoughts and we'll go from there.

Thanks for the advice, Midtown East sounds good too. I dont mind a tiny room as long as its a nice/clean hotel.

I dont think i can move my budget past $160 (my poor canadian dollar is worth less and less), but I should be good with a 3.5 star.

Think I can pull that off for 160? I was hoping i would have better luck since it was mid week, but i guess its prime summer time.

Few comments (to increase your chances) before getting into the bidding...

Is the Lower East Side zone acceptable? This zone is not as convenient as most of the midtown zones (although probably more convenient than the UES zone that you're willing to accept), but has been offering some good value lately, with some of the better pricing in NYC and most of the hotels being fairly new and well reviewed.

However, even if adding the LES zone, i think you will likely need to increase your budget further based upon current prices, as you're more likely looking at the $160-$180 range to be successful at the 3.5* level (or higher if you stick with your original zones)

Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

I guess im good with the lower east side, as long as I dont get stuck in a shady neighbourhood.

Im staying at the Martha Washington in the empire state building area for the previous 2 days (travelzoo for 157!), so I would like to cap it at 160/night for the 3-5th.

I think I would take a nicer hotel over spending a bunch for a crappier one in a nicer area I could just subway to anyways.

You can't really compare the rate you got for Sat-Mon (which i think there are better deals available thru PRICELINE / HOTWIRE should your current reservation be refundable) to what you will have to pay for Mon-Wed as NYC rates are typically more expensive on the weekends (especially Sunday nite) vs. mid-week rates (and the reason why your Martha Washington deal isn't available for your mid-week dates ;) ).

You should be aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any large metropolitan city, but NYC is a much safer (and cleaner) place then it was 20-30 years ago. More specifically regarding the LES zone, there are many parts within the zone that are now quite desirable as a lot of restaurants/bars have opened up in the area.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here... please confirm the zones, star rating, and maximum bid you'd like to try for first and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Interesting, i thought weekends would be more $. Good to know!

Youre right though about the areas, I shouldnt be thinking I'll be mugged at every corner in nyc.

Alrighty Here's my list of areas that i prefer in order:

Central Park South

Midtown West

Midtown East

Times Square

Upper East Side

Queensborough bridge

Chelsea

Max/night: $175,  3.5*

At current rates I am doubtful that you will be successful for a 3.5* in one of these zones, but you can certainly give it a try and if unsuccessful we'll take it from there...

When bidding 3.5* in NYC you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.
