Hello, I am going to NYC for an anniversary 9/29-10/3.  Have never done PL bidding before.  I don't know anything about the City, and therefore, not sure where to stay.  i would like at least a 4* hotel, trying to stay under $1000 total.  I have a hotel in Long Island City as a backup but would really like to stay IN the City.  Thanks for any strategies

Welcome to BetterBidding!

As i'm sure you've already discovered, there are expensive dates in NYC, and a 4* hotel at under $1000 all-in may be tough based upon current prices.

At the moment you're likely looking at $200-$225 for a 3.5* hotel if you're willing to expand outside of midtown and stay in the Lower East Side and/or Downtown-Financial District zones (neither is ideal, but certainly do-able, with about a 20-25 minute subway ride to midtown where many of your plans will likely take you... although it will be a short ride to Downtown-Financial and/or Greenwich Village when your plans take you there).

For a 3.5* hotel in Midtown you're likely looking at the $225-$250 area and for a 4* you're likely looking at the $250-$265 area.

Based upon the information above let us know your thoughts (or ask additional questions as i'm local to, and very familiar with, the area) and we'll take it from there.

If you want to travel around the same time frame, generally speaking, the timeframe from 12/15-12/27 (depending upon what day of the week New Year's falls on) are usually well priced. After that, January and February are usually some of the best prices of the year, followed by July/August... although the summer months have not been as inexpensive recently has they had been 2-3 years ago.

Once you confirm your dates (if you'll be changing airfare or not) we can then go deeper into a discussion of zones, as ultimately it will come down to your budget and how much you're willing to pay, and what is available for your ultimately dates of travel.

Anniversary is Oct. 1, so still would like to visit around that time frame.  Didn't know if early Sept. would be any cheaper.

I really would like to stay around $1000-1100 for the four nights.  I'm not too picky, but don't want to be stuck in a hole in the wall place either so I'm hesitant to choose 3*.  Like I said, I don't know anything about NYC so I'm kinda going in this blind. Is staying in Long Island City very inconvenient?

What is your maximum bid price (per nite before fees/taxes)... as i don't think your current budget of $1100 all-in (or about $200 bid price) is going to be enough for a 4 star hotel. You will more likely need to be in the $225-$250 area (although we we start lower then either of these amounts)

10/3-10/7 may be slightly cheaper... but if you already have airline tickets have you looked into what it will cost to change?

You may be looking at $75/ticket ($150 total assuming 2 tickets) plus any price difference in fare. So assuming that airfare is the same price, you need to save about $40/nite to break even on making the airfare change, and i don't think that changing your dates is going to be that significant.

Rates are date specific, but generally speaking in NYC weekends (Fri-Mon) are cheaper than midweek (Mon-Thur) so if you are looking to change your flights, you may want to try for a 4 day span from Friday(arrival)-Tuesday(departure) or Thursday(arrival)-Monday(departure) to take advantage of the lower rates that can often be had on the weekends (NOTE: Sunday nite is usually the least expensive of all, so try to include a Sunday nite within your stay)

To get started, why don't you first see the cost to change your airfare, then we can see if it will be worthwhile or not (but i wouldn't commit to any airfare changes until you confirm that you can get a substantially less expensive hotel for the new set of dates)

Let us know what you find regarding the airfare and we'll take it from there.

Generally speaking all of these zone work well at the 4* level for the average visitor:

The following are usually OK but a few items to take note of:

Chelsea - a few hotel in the zone can be up to a 10 minute walk to the subway, but this is a very 'hot' area right now with many restaurants, bars, cafes, boutiques, etc. so it is often included in bidding

MSG - some recent reviews of the New Yorker have been mixed so make sure you're OK with this property before including

MTE - most hotels are well located, but a few can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway

LES - not as convenient as the others, but the frequently won hotels in this zone have typically gotten good reviews and the zone offers some good value (as rates here are frequently a little cheaper than other zones, lately)

Please confirm which zones you would like to include and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow.

I don't think I'm ok with MSG so lets not include that.  Chelsea seems like it has nice hotels, even some 3* that might be ok... I would like to be in an area with transportation close, but don't mind walking a few blocks either. I did change my flights and found a hotel with refundable rates at the Courtyard in UES, but it is still $1250 for four nights.  Would like to be under that if possible.

Note that the Courtyard Upper East Side is not really well located close to the subway... if you think you may need to use a fallback reservation i would look for something more centrally located. Use our sister site RefundableRates.com, search within 1or3 miles of 'Times Square, NYC', then use the price slider on the top left of the page (above the list of hotels... you can also UNcheck anything that is below your desired hotel rating) to see your best options on the map that are well located.

To avoid any confusion, please list all of the zones that you are willing to accept, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Also, are we using a $225 maximum bid price and attempting for a 4* hotel?

For the zones above you will likely need to go up to a $225/nite bid price, but a likely/possible outcome would be the Hudson Hotel in the CPS zone, which has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards).

If you want to try for a 4* you're likely looking at the $225-$250 bid price range.

If you lower to 3* then why not just take the 3* Times Square for $187/nite on PRICELINE EXPRESS guessed to be the Tryp Times Square. If this is not an acceptable property then you can't include the Times Square zone for any bidding at 3 star or less.
