Priceline Hotel: 4* New York City (Times Square - Theatre District) The Muse New York, a Kimpton Hotel

I'm looking at staying in/near SoHo/Tribeca on 8/27-8/30 and am trying to figure out the appropriate price range. So far, I've tried to name my own price with a rebidding strategy with no luck (using the BB link for PRICELINE) - I started at $150 and quit at $225.

Any thoughts on what a 4.5*+ might go for in SoHo/Tribeca? PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* for $214 (Guessing it's the Sheraton Tribeca). At this point what's my best strategy, knowing that I want to be near SoHo?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

In NYC there is usually a big jump in price between 4* and 4.5* properties... at current rates i think a 4.5* in the Soho zone will likely cost you closer to $300/nite.

Is this the only zone you're willing to accept?

Ideally, we'd be in this zone. I don't know enough about the city to determine if one of the adjacent zones would be a better fit/deal, but this is an anniversary trip for my wife and I and we've definitely decided to stay downtown vs uptown (south of Time Square).

So, to answer your question, if there's a zone you recommend similar to SoHo that fits the anniversary and downtown criteria, I'd be game.

Thanks again for the response.

I'm very familiar with the city so let's backtrack a minute... what is it about the Soho zone that you like and makes you want to stay there? Do you have any anything on your 'to do' list while in the city this trip?

Sweet. Soho/Tribeca was a recommendation from a friend that used to live there.

The rough list:

- broadway show
- 9/11 museum/memorial
- ellis island
- central park

- highline

- time square

- eating/drinking (celebrating a wedding anniversary)

Thanks again

NOTE that none of these activities are in the Soho-Tribeca zone.

For most users the KEY to NYC is to be located near a subway station (and ideally 2-3 stations with the most frequently used subway lines).

Most users leave their hotels in the morning, explore most of the day, perhaps return once during the day to drop off bags acquired while shopping, rest/freshen up before dinner, then head out again for the nite.

So you want to make it easy to get an early start on your day and get to where you're going as well as make stopping back at the hotel during the day easy and the least time consuming as possible. As well, as per above, you will spend far less time in the immediate hotel vicinity then you think as you will usually be going from one location/site to the next location/site, without returning to the hotel at all. You could very easily spend most of your time in Soho (if you desired) without actually staying directly in Soho, but i'll add that you're only in NYC for 3 days (which is not that much time given how much the city has to offer) and you'll more making the most use of your time by taking to the subway to your first point of interest during the day, then to the next point of interest, and so-on, with little actual time at the hotel itself.

So with the above noted, why did you and your wife "definitely decided to stay downtown vs uptown (south of Time Square)"? While i applaud your desire to not stay in Times Square itself (which is often what we hear from users who have never been to or are not familiar the NYC), i also don't think it's necessary to avoid it, and would instead focus on the hotel itself, subway proximity, and value.

For instance, i'm seeing this 4 Times Square hotel on PRICELINE EXPRESS what i'm gussing to be The Muse for $183/nite. Assuming my guess is correct, while this property is located in the Times Square zone, it's on a side street (46th St) and you can easily avoid the throngs of people in Times Square by heading to Sixth Ave (instead of Seventh Ave and Broadway) and catching the subway 2 blocks away at Rock Center (48th St and Sixth Ave), as an example. As well, the hotel gets great reviews and i imagine would be a nice place for an anniversary celebration (and should i be wrong in this guess, you have a 'safety net' of this property having a 9+ user review rating by previous PRICELINE guests)

Ultimately it's your stay and you need to be comfortable with the location you decide, so i'll add that i'm also seeing what i believe to be:

Hotel Hugo for $215/nite (4* in the Soho zone)

However, use our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com (search 10 miles from Times Square NYC) for your dates then use the hotel name filter on the left side of the page... see the location of The Muse (and proximity of the subway by zooming in on the map)... then look at the Hotel Hugo and you'll see that you're actually a bit far west on the island.

To continue with more options south of Times Square:

W Downtown (4.5* in Downtown-Financial District) for $153/nite

Sixty Les (5* hotel in the Lower East Side zone) for $283/nite

The James New York (4.5* Soho) for $316/nite

So with everything above... any of the above of interest and/or your thoughts?
