Hello,

I and my wife will come to New York for 3 nights between 6-9 august. This is the first time that we will be in NY. We are lopking for a safe good hotel. I have checked hotwire and priceline. I have found a 5 star hotel at hotwire for 730 $ including tax. This hotel is probably Sofitel New york. On the other hand I found acheaper alternative on priceline. 4* hotel at Long Island city costs 468 $ including tax. The price is very attractive but I am not sure about that area and the hotel. The hotel amenities are;

8+ user rating

Free internet

Restaurant

Business center

Room assigned at checkin - sleeps two adults

Do you have an idea about this hotel? Do yoi recommens LIC or do we need to look for Manhattan area?

Does it worth to pay 250$ more for a hotel in the Manhattan side?

My best guess for the PRICELINE EXPRESS offer above would be the Paper Factory Hotel.

I'm not a fan of the Long Island City area, although the area is going thru a transformation (with quite a few new hotels popping up over the last few years and they are continuing to build more), many parts are still quite industrial. However, the bottomline is that you will likely have a very different experience staying in LIC vs. Manhattan.

Part of the appeal (to me) of most cities is having the freedom to walk out your door and have almost anything you need/want at your disposal, and you give up part of this 'freedom' by staying outside of the city. Long Island City is certainly do-able, but it's a different experience vs. staying in Manhattan, and it is also less convenient to return to your hotel during the day to drop off any bags you may have acquired shopping, freshen up before dinner, or just sit down and rest for a little while between your NYC explorations.

Is it worth an extra $80/nite... probably not; but it need not be such a large price difference as you're comparing a 5* hotel in Manhattan to a 4* hotel in Long Island City... why not look at the 4* hotels in NYC which i'm seeing for $20-$30/nite more vs. the $135/nite Long Island City hotel (and for $25/nite it is worth staying in Manhattan, at least to me it would be, especially if it's your first time in the city)

Early August is the time of year to get a great deal on a hotel in NYC, if you are familiar with the Price.line bidding process you may be able to get something in the 4* range for a few dollars more than Long Island City.

I have stayed in L.I.C. before, but it was for business. Yes, there are trains available at Queensboro plaza and other stations, but as thereuare mentions, this is an industrial area that doesn't have the same amenities as neighborhoods in Manhattan. I prefer staying in Manhattan for a leisure trip and using the room to wash up or take a nap. I think the price difference will be negligible and worth reconsidering your location. Just my two cents.

Thank you for your answers and support. I have tried to bid at Priceline for a few times but I didn't achieve. I have booked two hotels from hotwire for san diego and los angeles. Since the price is fixed and it is possible to read the user reviews at hotwire, it seemed more clear to use it to me.

I will try to learn priceline bidding tips. My last question is; for a first time visitor what areas do you recommend at Manhattan? There are a lot of regions in there, which ones are more convenient for touristic areas?
