Hotwire Hotel: Is a "resort" the same as a "hotel"?

I'm looking for a 4* hotel in the Kaanapali (Maui) area for Aug 10-17.  Currently Hotwire shows a couple different options.  One is a 4* "Kaanapali area resort" for $189/night (normally $339), and the other is a 4* "Kaanapali area hotel" for $264 (normally $349).  Trying to figure out what the difference is between a "resort" and a "hotel."  Are they just two descriptive terms used by Hotwire that essentially mean the same thing?  Or is that a clue that they're very different types of establishments?  A $75/night difference is pretty significant.

Thanks so much!

Pretty much. A resort could offer more activities like jet skies, several restaurants etc. But you can also find 2* hotels with only a pool and a floating duck that use the "resort therm" to profile them selfs.

I think resort is an old school word that is a bit abused today. I associate the word with the old hotels in Catskills (New York) that was a large resort area back in the days with tons of activities for children and dance every night for the parents etc. A complete holiday destination.

If you need any ID help so please list the amenities HOTWIRE associates with the hotel you're looking at. Please run a search using our BiddingHelper.com tool at the top of this page. Once the search is completed, use the EASY VIEW TAB and click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing to view the complete set of amenities. Then copy and paste the amenities, as well as the price, in a reply to this thread and we will then have a look at this.

HOTWIRE used to only show one hotel per star rating in each zone... by adding more descriptive hotel classes (hotel, resort, boutique, etc) they can now show more hotels by displaying one hotel within each hotel class per zone.

In other words they previously would only show one 3* hotel in a zone on a given search, but now they can show multiple 3* hotels in the same zone... a 3* 'resort', a 3* 'hotel', a 3* 'boutique', etc.

Let us know the details/parameters of your upcoming trip and we will try to assist in finding a hotel that meets your specific needs.
