Priceline Hotel: Bidding Help Needed 4/9-4/13 New York City

My wife found a great airfare deal to new York and booked yesterday  bdfore I saw that Hotels will likely cost us around $800 (yikes)

I have no experience in bidding New York and the express deals are in prettty pricey for us.

Ideally we would like to be in any zone from cps to the North to Chelsea to the south but if we have to to save money would consider the south end of manhattan.  We are just sightseeing so its not that big of a deal where we stay but would like somewhere half way decent.  would consider 3.5 or 3*  if we need to.

I looked at hotwire yesterday and saw a 4* in the financial district that was $ 88 for the 10-13 (fri, Sat Sun but its gone as I write this.  I would consider breaking up our stay into two different hotels if we needed to. We are flying into LGA.

Ideas or strategies... Is there any trend in New York city. Can I get a decent place and have it cost less than $500?

thanks for any insights

The slow season in NYC is generally from around Jan-early Mar, then rates start to climb a bit into the busier season in late April/early May as weather gets nicer.

I don't think you're going to find enough of a difference if you broke up your stay. For example, I see the W New York for $135 on Hot.wire for 4/9-13. If you break it up for the 4/10-13 period, it shows at $119. However, the 4* option in the same zone for the first night is $166. Splitting the stay averages out to about $4 and change less per night and you'd have to switch hotels.

Unfortunately, I don't think $500 or under is possible during this season for a 4* in Midtown. You may see slightly different prices than I do on Hot.wire, but using the $135 W as an example, w/taxes that's $675ish. I do think you could try bidding and possibly get that number more in the $600-625 neighborhood.

Would that be acceptable?

To get under $500 all-in you would be looking at a room rate of less than $100/nite, which is rate in NYC and when available only during the slowest of times.

I think the 4* MTE property on HOTWIRE referenced above for $130/nite (with Boutique, Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Spa, Pet Friendly) would most likely be the W New York and would be a good deal for these dates relative to the other offers. You could save $10-$15/nite by staying downtown, but that's not enough of a price difference (imo) to justify the less convenient location.

Thanks for the information.  I agree with your analysis on staying Downtown vs staying Mid town, good point, thanks.  Would you recommend taking the likely W on Hot.wire or bidding on PRICELINE?.  I thought I read that some MTE hotels are a good ways from the subway?

Looks like the W may be up to $154 now?  Does hotwire flucuate that much day to day?  That puts us up to $768.

Unfortunately, I'm also seeing the W at $153 this morning.

A couple of the hotels (primarily the OneUN) are by the far E border of the zone, which is not as convenient but I'd still say I'd prefer it vs downtown.

Rates on Hot.wire are dynamic and can change - sometimes substantially - at any time. Unfortunately, there's no way to know if that rate will come back down, but you can use our free RateDrop.com service to get alerts on declines for Hot.wire, PRICELINE EXPRESS or regular rate listings.

It looks like the price jumped on account of the first nite, as the hotel is still offered for the last 3 nites of your stay at $136/nite... but when searching for the solo nite of 4/9 the price is up to $226/nite.

PRICELINE EXPRESS has this 4 Star Madison Square Garden (confirm your dates on the landing page) for your complete stay for $134/nite (Restaurant, Business Center, Fitness Center)... but i'm not sure which property this one may be (the Tryp has previously been seen with this amenity set, but the amenities are common for NYC, and i have reason to believe it is likely a different property... but the price is certainly right!)

Its been a while since I have done any bidding in a while.  I read on another thread that the lockout is now down to two hours so thats new to me.  I also thought I read somewhere that in New York the best deals often are found within 3 days of checkin (but not always)?

I'm 10 days out right now so I will keep an eye on hotwire and express deals to see if things change.  I may bid the midtown areas a couple of times up to $125-$130  I also will look for a fully cancelable back up.

thank you for your continued assistance

True.

Not sure if or where you read this, but i disagree... if you could score something nice for $135/nite or less for these dates i would take it now. Even if rates are to go lower, it will not be by much, imo, whereas if they go higher it could be by quite a bit more.

You could use our RateDrop service to help you monitor rates for these dates.

Thanks,

I bid up to $110 with no success.  What is the new thing about paying almost $100 at the hotel?   I remember resort fees but never saw these fees included in a total before.  Soi far I bid everything from Central Park south to the north Mid-town east and hells Kitchen west.

Are there any reasons to consider or avoid empire state building, madison square garden, chelsea?  sorry I really don't know the city very well.

Nothing new in NYC, in fact it's the norm, especially this time of year.

Soi far I bid everything from Central Park south to the north Mid-town east and hells Kitchen west.

Exactly which, my PRICELINE name, zones have you bid? I wouldn't bid Hell's Kitchen as some of the hotels there are not that convenient to the subway.

These zones are fine... some Chelsea hotels can be up to a 10 minute walk to the subway, but this is a 'hot' area right now (lots of bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, boutiques, etc) that it's still considered very desirable.

If you let us know your true maximum bid price (how much you're actually willing to bid at this time) i will have a closer look at the offers for your dates and give you my recommendations as to the best offers/zones.

The honest answer to your question is I will bid what it takes to get a deal on a room.  The likely identifiable W hotel  MTE  will cost me $750-780 depending on whare i catchit in hotwires cyclical pricing. So my bidding limit would likely be $155

Today I bid 4.5 up to $135 in the following zones  MTE, MTW  CPS, Times Square.   I did not bid Madison Square Garden or empire state building zones but I am not opposed to adding them either.

The W sounds like a nice place to end up but I've never stayed at one so I have to defer to your experience.  That said if I could get some place nicer for the same money I'd stay open to that.  There seems to be no shortage of 4 * properties on either Hotwire or Priceline Express Deals in the $150 range.  I did see what likely id's as the Club Quarters 3.5 in MTW as and express deal for $132 but might like to find a place nicer than that if possible.

I am also open to any ideas or different bidding ideas or zones you might recommend.

Oddly while bidding the*4.5 star today I didn't see a pay at the hotel line when I bid at all like I did yesterday.

Today I bid 4.5 up to $135...

Your bidding limit for a 4* is $155 but you've only bid up to $135 for a 4.5*... so i'm guessing that $155 is not your 'true' bidding limit at this point in time.

At what point would you like to get this done and bid at prices that have a higher probability of getting this trip completed?

This trip has been postponed.  Thank god she booked on Southwest at least the fare is completely reusable.  We were going before a contract expires at her work which she thought was Tuesday the 14th... Now her employer is making be available from Saturday the 11th.  So I guess I'm really lucky my early bids werent accepted.

Thank you for your help

In reply to what you said yesterday:  My bidding up to $135 @4.5 at had no bearing whatsoever as to what I was willing to bid at that moment in time.  I said I was willing to bid to $ 155 and I was.  I'm lucky now that I didn't.
