Hotwire Hotel: 4.5* New York City (Times Square - Theater District) Westin New York at Times Square

Planning a weekend stay in NYC from 5/8 to 5/10 in the midtown area.

Want a place close to a subway stop.

4* and above, and want to avoid places with too small rooms.

Budget is around 200 bucks.

I was wondering what hotels and districts I should avoid and whether I can get double beds. May I upgrade the room after winning the bid?

HOTWIRE or PRICELINE EXPRESS (where you can look for a listing with bed choice) are better choices in this case. Also, in terms of being near a subway, there's no way to specify when bidding, you have to be willing to stay anywhere within the shaded zone area/s you pick.

NYC rooms are commonly small (or quite small.) With two beds (when even available) usually going for a premium, one bed is to be expected when bidding in NYC. PRICELINE and HOTWIRE reservations are not eligible for upgrades, but you can ask at the hotel. However, there's little chance of an upgrade in NYC.

Will you actually be four people in the room OR only two but each wants their own bed? If you will be more than two people, how many adults/children? Would a rollaway or pullout sofabed be sufficient for the 'second' bed?

Two people prefer individual bed, so a sofa bed is also acceptable.

The travelers are first time to NY. So I'd like to book a room for them which is close to some sightseeings - Empire State or Rockefeller Center. I think near midtown area is a good choice?

I've reserved a refundable room at Omni Berkshire just in case but I definitely look for a better deal.

Searching HOTWIRE for 2adults/1child (which should ensure separate sleeping accommodations) i see what looks to be The Lexington New York City for $193/nite.

I'm also seeing what looks like the Omni Berkshire for $191 for a King Bed... 2 Doubles for $213/nite.

Note that the need for separate sleeping accommodations comes at a premium since you need to declare triple occupancy. If you were willing to share a bed (should the hotel not be able to accommodate your request for a room with two beds or a room with a pullout sofabed or a rollaway brought into the room) i'm seeing the following for double occupancy:

Westin New York at Times Square for $175/nite

Warwick for $200/nite

Thoughts on the options above?

I decided to choose double occupancy.

I saw the $175/nite on Hot.wire too. I think it might be Hyatt Time Square because it was revealed through "last person blabla". But just now the sign was not there. Is there any chance that they changed the hotel?

The "last person ...." thing is best simply ignored.

When you say "...the sign not there", are you referring to the "last person ...." thing or that the offer is gone?  If the offer is gone, continue to watch.  Offers can change pretty regularly.  When one comes along that has everything you want, don't hesitate too long.

I've watched a number of cities over longer periods of time.  Sometimes the offers come and go very quickly and sometimes they stay around for a while.  I've never figured out any pattern or logic though, other than in one very small town the single offer seemed to increase a dollar or two each weekend, and then go back down during the following week.

"last person" sign is gone. The offer is still there.

According to my previous experience, I always got what the "last person" sign implied.

So when the sign is gone, I'm a little bit afraid that the hotel was changed. I think Hyatt Time Square is good one according to its reviews.

The "Last person got ___" is in reference to the last purchase of a hotel at this star level in the zone, not necessarily the specific hotel offered. If you've mostly bought hotels in zones where there are few hotels at the star rating offered, then there is a greater chance that the hotel you receive will be one that was also received by the last person... but in areas where there are lots of hotels at the star rating you're considering, then there is a greater chance that you receive something different.

I'm not currently seeing any 4* hotel in the Times Square zone offered for under $225/nite when searching for your dates... are you still seeing the hotel you thought was the Hyatt?

Have you found the Hotel Reviews at the very end of this site?

And then there is www.tripadvisor.com.  There are 461 NYC hotels reviewed there.  The Omni and the Hyatt are in the 60s, and the Westin is currently 154th.

Published reviews are always a good start, but one has to then sort out just what is personally important .... location, ambiance, free breakfast, price, view, service, quiet, soft (or firm) mattress, etc., etc..  I'd really recommend you read the reviews and consider the features which are more important to you.  (I generally avoid any hotel where reviewers have noted how much they like the hotel's firm mattress. )

I saw the $175/nite on HOTWIRE too. I think it might be Hyatt Time Square...

I now see a 4.5* in the Times Square zone for $175/nite with:

Pet Friendly

Smoke Free

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Laundry

Hi-Speed Internet

Blind Accessible

Room Accessible

Bathroom Accessible

Roll-in Shower

... but i think this is the Westin, not the Hyatt.

Taking everything you have mentioned above into consideration i think you can't go too wrong with any of them, but my suggestion in terms of order preference would be The Warwick, The Omni, The Westin.
