Trying to book 2 adults and 2 children for Mar 16-18.  We will be coming to Chicago by train and hope these will be good "zones" for sightseeing and shopping with teens.

I am trying to identify the following:

4.5 star - Mag Mile Water Tower

$126/ night (Canadian $) - free internet, pet friendly, boutique hotel, smoke free rooms, fitness centre, restaurant, business centre - thinking that it is Thompson.

4 star - Mag Mile Water Tower

$115/night (Canadian $) - smoke free rooms, fitness centre, restaurant, business centre, internet access, accessible for visually impaired, accessible for hearing impaired, accessible path of travel, in room accessibility

4 star- Mag Mile River North

$126/night (Canadian $) - free internet, pet friendly, boutique hotel, smoke free rooms, fitness centre, business centre, golf nearby

Do you have a recommendation in terms of suitability?

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

If you are coming into Chicago by train, you're coming in at Union. However, 2-3 blocks North of Union is Ogilvie. Under Ogilvie is the Chicago French Market (http://www.frenchmarketchicago.com/hours/), which is a great place to grab a bite to eat.

A lot of people who come in by train think about staying close to the station, but it's more convenient from a sightseeing standpoint to stay around the river or North of it.

The 4.5* Mag Mile N-WT is a possible match for the Thompson.

For the 4* Mag Mile N-WT:

I believe there are more amenities then what you have posted above as HOT.WIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you click thru a few extra links.

If you repeat your search using our Bidding.Helper.com tool... use the HOTWIRE EASY VIEW tab and then click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing, do you see more amenities then what you have listed above?

If you see: Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Blind Accessible, Deaf Accessible, Travel Accessible, Room Accessible, Bathroom Accessible, Roll-in Shower.

--- The Westin Michigan Ave. would be a possibility, as it's been seen with this amenity set previously. The potential Thompson would be more appealing for not much more.

I'm not seeing a 4* in the Mag Mile-RN area with that amenity set when searching. Are you still seeing it when searching for these dates?

I'm very familiar with the area - please let me know if you have any city questions.

I am not see the river north - I think I may have been mistaken and it was water tower.

So through bidding helper - 4star Mag Mile Water Tower- 97US$ - FULL AMENITIES: Free Internet, Pet friendly, Boutique hotel, Smoke-free rooms, Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access, Golf nearby, Tennis nearby, Accessible for visually impaired, Accessible for hearing impaired, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Wheelchair accessible, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking, Roll-in shower

4star River North is $90 -FULL AMENITIES: Pet friendly, Indoor pool(s), Fitness center, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access-   guessing Sheraton.

I am wondering if I should just spend the little extra and go with the 4.5 star - want something a little more special as it a mini grad trip for the girls.

Any other restaurant suggestions would be welcomed!  The girls are 17-18, is Second City an ok idea or is it too mature?

Do you think we need transit passes or are most sights within walking distance?  We are Canadian and not afraid of cold :)

Thank you!

It's been colder than normal in Chicago this Winter, although thankfully, the forecast looks like things will warm up moderately by mid-March to around the 40's.

Personally, I find downtown Chicago quite walkable. If you want to take a taxi to your hotel or if you want to get across town quickly, you can take public transit. Still, the city isn't vast and it really doesn't take that terribly long to get around. You can head South of the city to Chinatown via the water taxi and if you're in the mood for a longer walk you can walk up to the Lincoln Park Zoo/Old Town/Second City area, although it's a bit of a trek.

Second City should be fine. Let me know likes/dislikes and I would be happy to offer restaurant suggestions.

4* Mag Mile N-WT $97.

-- Possible match for the Public.

4* Mag Mile-RN $90

--- Possible match for the Sheraton.

Personally, I'd much rather suggest the 4.5* potential Thompson. If it was $25 or $50 more, maybe not as much, but it's about $8 more than the potential Sheraton and about the same as the potential Public.

Please keep us updated with what you decide and let us know if you have any questions before booking.

Made a rookie error and glanced quickly at amenities for 4.5 star water tower. Listed amenities were: free internet, fitness centre, restaurant(s), business centre, internet access. Didn't even think to question that yesterday it said "boutique" but not today. Ended up with Hyatt. Had really hoped for Thompson.

Hoping that it will be a great experience regardless.

If you have restaurant suggestions for the area - mid range price - girls are excited to try chicago pizza- any local favourites?

While not what you were hoping for, this is a very nice result in that it's a solid property in a great location - it's a block off Michigan Ave and it's an easy walk to the Chicago Ave/State St Red Line subway. There's also a Corner Bakery across the street (opposite corner) - while not something that I'd recommend as a destination, it's a "room service alternative" that's right there.

Pizza-wise, I actually like Lou Malnati's (which is a short walk away in the Gold Coast - http://www.loumalnatis.com/chicago-gold-coast) or Giordanos (even closer to your hotel - a few blocks away - http://giordanos.com/location/gold-coast-magnificent-mile/) for deep dish. However, overall in terms of pizza I particularly like La Madia (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/osteria-la-madia-chicago?select=cUq35UCUFPU3MRLcbv4tqg#NExkSZnJ3Id_r6NUbZ_VKA) in River North.

Let me know likes/dislikes in terms of type of food and I'd be happy to offer additional suggestions.

Yolk (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g35805-d2048880-Reviews-Yolk-Chicago_Illinois.html) is a popular breakfast option right nearby your hotel, but there are a number of other options such as Hendrickx Bakery (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g35805-d2190157-Reviews-Hendrickx_Belgian_Bread_Crafter-Chicago_Illinois.html)

If you search under the trip information in your HOTWIRE account, do you see any additional amenities showing?

Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.

Enjoy your stay.

Edited to add:

While Michigan Ave is the most widely known shopping destination in the city, it's not exactly a place to find bargains - aside from some options like Nordstrom Rack. If you head up into Lakeview/Lincoln Park, you're going to find more in the way of boutique thrifts and "treasure hunt"-ish options, with places like Luxury Garage Sale (http://www.yelp.com/biz/luxury-garage-sale-chicago), which is really easy to get to and not far from Old Town (Second City) and the Zoo.
