thereuare
Welcome to BetterBidding! HOTWIRE's new interface requires that you do the following to ensure you're seeing the complete list: 1) use the EASY VIEW tab of our BiddingHelper.com and click the green 'See All Amenities' button OR 2) search HOTWIRE (or use the HOTWIRE tab at BiddingHelper.com) and...click the offeron the next page click the BOOK NOW linkin the TRIP SUMMARY box click the 'See more' link at the end of the amenitiesUsing the method(s) above, this is the full amenity set i'm seeing for this 3* offer: Complimentary Breakfast Free Internet Fitness Business Hi-Speed Internet ... if this is what you're seeing, my best guess for this one would be the Holiday Inn Express New York - Manhattan West Side (which is not the most convenient location given it's a bit far west in the zone). Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. Jennyjo0320
Thank you for the quick reply! I'm pretty open to where we stay. I usually use Priceline, but decided to check out Hotwire today. Our budget is up to $150/night and hopefully a 3* or 4* hotel. I like the Central Park area, but is there a better area to stay in? We are planning on getting the Weekly Unlimited MetroCard, so I know if the hotel is close to the subway, it will be fairly quick to get where we want to go. Any suggestions are appreciated! AaronJB
The Holiday Inn Express West Side is right by one of what I think is the most remarkable sights in the city, the Intrepid Air/Space Museum, but as noted, it's otherwise rather out-of-the-way. I'm also seeing what is likely the Row for $150 and what may be the Park South for $146 (you may see slightly different prices than I do.) Would either of these be of interest? Jennyjo0320
We are trying to stay in the lower $100's if at all possible. My friend who is coming with me has a really low budget and I'm trying to make it so I don't have to pay too much of her part of the stay. If we use Priceline, is it possible to get a good hotel between $100-125/night? I know this may be a lowball price, but one can always hope, right? :D Should I start a new topic under the Priceline board? Link to comment
thereuare
Please keep all posts for this stay in this thread. Once you win a hotel use the 'ADD REPLY and REPORT WIN' button on the lower right corner of this page in order to the edit the topic title to reflect your win and to report the details of your purchase... the thread will automatically be moved to the correct section of the board (if necessary). If you want to try bidding for the best price, please list all zones which are acceptable, your true maximum bid and the star rating you would like to try for first (ie- are you willing to pay more for a 4* vs. a 3* OR is the goal the least expensive 3* or better), and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. ALSO, note that the CPS zone contains the Hudson Hotel, which while well located, has notoriously small rooms, so make sure you're comfortable with this outcome before including this property in your acceptable zone list. Jennyjo0320
The most we are willing to pay at the moment is $150/night. We'd like to stay in a 4*, but are willing to stay in 3* as well. The areas we'd like to stay in are pretty open. MTW, TS, MTE, MSG, ESB, CPS, are the areas we were thinking about. Do most hotels add on a resort fee? In your opinion, is less than $150/night realistic? Link to comment
AaronJB
Only a few hotels in NYC charge a "resort fee"-style fee. Vegas and Orlando are two areas where resort fees are very common. Jennyjo0320
Well, that's good news. Must have just been the couple I looked at that charged it. I looked at 3 or 4 different ones that charged $20 or 34/night. Link to comment
thereuare
Last year there were maybe 2-3 hotels that i knew of throughout the city that charged a resort fee, but since the first of the year this number has grown and now there are about a 10-12 or so that i'm aware of. thereuare
Assuming the small rooms at the Hudson would be acceptable you can bid as follows for the zones you have indicated are acceptable... When bidding 4* in NYC you have THREE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding. Jennyjo0320
I want to be sure I understand the rebidding process. I have read the thread about it, but just to be clear. To add a re-bid zone means if I am wanting a 4* then I need to add an area that does not have a 4*. So if I go by what you are suggesting, I will first bid on 4* for MSG, TS, and MTE first at $100. If that doesn't go through, then I want to add a re-bid zone that does not have a 4* like Greenwich Village and bid $105. Then if my bid still is not accepted, I will add another zone without the 4* (Like Coney Island). Is this right? Please be patient as I have bid before on PL, but never with this much strategy. Thank you in advance! Link to comment
thereuare
To add a re-bid zone means if I am wanting a 4* then I need to add an area that does not have a 4*.Mostly correct... but to be more correct, you want to add an area that does not have a 4* hotel or higher. The star rating you select on PRICELINE is the minimum star rating you're willing to accept, and PRICELINE will always place you in a higher rated hotel if one is available at your bid price. So if you're bidding 4*, and there is another zone that does not have 4* hotels but DOES have 5* hotels, this is not a re-bid zone since your 4* bid could be upgraded to a 5* hotel. The above is not applicable to your current NYC bidding, but it's an important distinction to add for anyone else following along OR for any future bidding that you may do. ...I want to add a re-bid zone that does not have a 4* like Greenwich Village and bid $105. Then if my bid still is not accepted, I will add another zone without the 4* (Like Coney Island). Is this right?Yes, you got it... but do you want to confirm your third re-bid zones before proceeding? Also, always double check your re-bid zones just before bidding to make sure that nothing has changed since you last checked, as upgrades, downgrades, and new hotels can be added/removed at any time. Jennyjo0320
I'm curious. Any idea what the 3 1/2* Hotel on Priceline Express Deals is for $169/night? Amenities: Condo and Wifi. Dates the same: March 29-Apr. 2. As for bidding, my 3rd rebid would be Greenpoint-Williamsburg as that's a 3*. I'd just make sure if 4* wasn't possible, not to use that area when I started rebidding for 3*'s. Is this correct? This is all very interesting. But it keeps me from grading all the papers I have to grade. :) Thanks again for all your help. Link to comment
thereuare
...always double check your re-bid zones just before bidding to make sure that nothing has changed since you last checked, as upgrades, downgrades, and new hotels can be added/removed at any time. Yes, that is a third re-bid zone, but note that the zones have recently changed and you currently have FOUR re-bid zones at the 4* level (and THREE re-bid zones at the 3.5* level)... do you want to confirm the 4th re-bid zone at the 4* level OR you can simply follow the strategy above with the 3 re-bid zones (as i don't think you need the additional bids since you're easily able to start lower than what is likely to be accepted) As far as the PRICELINE EXPRESS property, this is in the ESB zone? If so, i'm not sure which one this may be... the rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn New York/Midtown Park Avenue all have a mini-fridge and microwave, so perhaps this is being classified as a condo? (but i'm far from certain) Let us know what you decide and how it goes (or if you want to confirm your re-bid zones) and we'll take it from there. Jennyjo0320
A couple of questions- Would it be cheaper to stay in NYC Sunday to Wednesday than Sunday to Thursday? Or does it matter? What would be the process of bidding for a 3* as well? My attempts at bidding for a 4* did not work. :/ Thanks in advance! Link to comment
AaronJB
Rates are really date-specific. Would you want to try for 3.5* or jump down to a 3*? thereuare
Would it be cheaper to stay in NYC Sunday to Wednesday than Sunday to Thursday? If you are considering a stay from 3/29-4/1 (instead of the 4/2 check-out you have recently bid for) i do believe that this shorter stay would result in a lower cost per nite and that you could be successful for a 4* hotel in the zones you have already bid at $150 or less. Do you want to try the 4* bidding again for 3/29-4/1... or lower your star rating to the 3.5* or 3* level? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Jennyjo0320
Let's lower the star rate to 3.5*/3 stars for the stay of 3/39-4/2. I'd hate to cut a day our of our already short week. Thank you ahead of time! Link to comment
thereuare
If you want to lower your star rating do you want to go for a 3.5* or a 3*? One other option: Bid for a 4* hotel for 3/29-4/1... then bid for a different hotel for 4/1-4/2. You'll likely need to change hotels mid-stay, but you'll have a 4* for the majority of your trip and then switch to a lower rated (but likely more expensive) 3*/3.5* hotel for the last nite of your stay. How you weigh having the nicer hotel vs. the inconvenience of changing hotels is likely the deciding factor as to which option is better for you. As a point of reference, i think: 3/29-4/1 you can get a 4* in the $130-$135 area 4/1-4/2 a 3* in the $130-$135 area For your complete stay likely a 3* in the $135-$145 area... a 3.5* or 4* in the $150-$160 area (NOTE: not much more than you have already bid) Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. thereuare
Please use the EASY VIEW tab of our BiddingHelper.com to ensure you're seeing the complete set of amenities associated with each property. Using this method below is the amenity set i'm seeing for each: 3.5* Financial District - Wall Street Free Internet Smoke Free Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet ... my guess would be the Club Quarters Wall Street. (although i'll add that i would sooner increase pay the extra $15/nite to stay in a 4* hotel in midtown vs. $140/nite to stay in a 3.5* Downtown... unless your plans this trip have you spending much of your time in this area) 3.5* Times Square Smoke Free Fitness Business Hi-Speed Internet Travel Accessible Room Accessible ...
