Priceline Hotel: 5* New York City (Central Park South) Westhouse Hotel New York

This is my first time using the priceline bidding tool and I have a few questions regarding Waldorf Towers. According to your hotel list, it looks as though Waldorf Towers is the only 5* hotel that has been won through bidding in Midtown East, is that still correct? Also, what would be a realistic low bid?

Thank you!

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

The Waldorf Towers is the only hotel that has been reported to the board at the 5* level in MTE. There are almost certainly others, but it's unknown as to which are participating on the bidding side of the service until they are confirmed with a post here.

What would be your desired budget per night for this stay?

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.

The Waldorf Towers and the Waldorf Towers are run as two separate hotels, have different star ratings, and different pricing (currently the Towers for your dates is $120 more expensive than the Astoria)... i wouldn't use the pricing of the Waldorf Astoria to determine your maximum bid for the Waldorf Towers unless your goal for this trip is to stay in this location and therefore if your 5* bidding fails you would then take the Waldorf Astoria thru traditional booking channels (please book thru our sister sister MAPS and HOTELS.com if you go the 'retail' booking route).

If you'd like to try bidding for any 5* hotel in this zone with a maximum bid of $200 you can try as follows...

When bidding 5* in NYC you have TWELVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 5* Midtown East...

Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $175, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $188, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $190, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $193, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $195, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $198, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $200

Any questions feel free to ask.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thank you so much for your help. My bids all got rejected from priceline.

I just saw a deal on hotwire for $138 for a 4.5* midtown east hotel with amenities: Business center, fitness facilities, spa, tennis nearby and restaurant. I'm thinking it is either the Benjamin or Waldorf Astoria, what do you think?

Thank you!

If you repeat your search using the EASY VIEW tab at our BiddingHelper.com too, is this the full list of amenities associated wtih this property:

Free Internet

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Hi-Speed Internet

Tennis

Spa

... if this is what you're seeing, a new amenity set for the Waldorf Astoria, or an upgrade of the Grand Hyatt since the last time it was reported to the board, would be my best guess for this one.

What are your needs for this stay and/or is there something in particular that you're looking for? I'm also seeing what i believe to be the Westin New York at Times Square for $133/nite which i think would be a good choice as well.

Thank you! I would really like to stay at the waldorf astoria but don't want to stay at the grand hyatt (they do not have good reviews on tripadvisor). Hotwire's standard rate hotels still lists the grand hyatt as a 4 star hotel, so could they upgrade the star rating on secret hotels but not standard rate ones?

That is a great rate for the Westin but I would prefer to stay away from Times Square if possible. My husband and I are planning to go to some museums, go shopping, eat at good restaurants and possibly see a show (need to look for tickets today!). I would appreciate any restaurant or show recommendations you might have. We are going to avoid all of the traditional tourist things. Please let me know if you have any other hotel suggestions!

Thank you!

My guess for the 5* MTC property would be The Quinn.

Note that The Westin, while in the Times Square zone, is on Eight Ave and although busy/crowded, this is more the Theater District than Times Square (as well as Restaurant Row on the other side of Eighth Ave)... i only mention since you stated both in your reply above. (you can see the location at our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com if you're not that familiar with the area)

Usually the retail side of HOTWIRE has the same star ratings as the opaque side, but i have seen instances where they differ. (but i don't see the Grand Hyatt listed for your dates)

How about THIS 4.5* Midtown East property for $195/nite on PRICELINE EXPRESS (confirm your dates on landing page) with:

Pets Allowed

Restaurant

Fitness Center

Business Center

... this hotel also boasts a 9.0 or better user review rating. My guess here would be the Omni Berkshire Place (which if correct, would also provide you with easy access to the E train for your Theater Nites and about 4-5 blocks to the 6 train for any UES museums.

Does this one work for your needs?

NOTE that another user just reported the Grand Hyatt at the 4.5* level thru HOTWIRE, so that would be the more likely outcome (vs. the Waldorf) for the 4.5* MTE property inquired above.

Have you looked at the Hotel Reviews on this site?  They have a bit different perspective, possibly since members are enjoying the Priceline bargain rate.  Only a very few negative ones.

If you haven't found the review area here, it is clear at the end of the site.  When on the home page, scroll clear down.  Then get into the first post and click on "N" for New York, since the reviews are organized by state.

The Grand Hyatt has a very good location and is acceptable, imo, depending upon one's needs.

It's a large business oriented hotel, so there likely will not be any personalized service (no remembering and greeting you may name each time you walk in, etc), and this is generally the basis for most of the negative reviews. Also, there is great variety in terms of room size and layout, i have seen two rooms here and one was large while the other was substantially smaller and not as well laid out, but both were very clean.

So it really depends upon your needs and the style you are looking for, and how good of a rate you're able to get relative to your other options.

A new amenity set for the Westhouse New York would be my best guess for this 5 star HOTWIRE property.

What looks to be The Royalton (confirm your dates on the landing page) appears to be offered thru PRICELINE EXPRESS (Pets Allowed, Business Center, Fitness Center) for $185/nite should this be of any interest.

Every time I'm about to book a hotel, I see another one I'm interested in. Could you please help me figure out this one? Under the hotwire list, it says the only reported hotel has been Langham Place Fifth Avenue. I would love to get Langham Place but the amenity set doesn't match up. On hotwire, it says the last hotel someone got was the Refinery.

Hotwire

214.00 5 star

Empire State

FULL AMENITIES: Free Internet, Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Internet access

This listing has not yet been ID'd/reported to the board. The Refinery could be a possibility, but it may be something else. The underlying listing does get a 4.5/5 on tripadvisor so it does get solid reviews.

Are you looking for something in particular in terms of hotel?

We are looking for a luxury hotel, would like to keep the price around $200, and want the location to be near Central Park... Any suggestions you have as you see deals would be greatly appreciated!

I think most of the hotels above already meet these requirements... so to better advise and help you find what it is that you are looking for, why not any of the hotels above thus far? (especially the guessed Royalton, which is well within your budget, gets good reviews, and is near Central Park)

I decided to try bidding for a 5 star hotel in NYC again (via your link) and got the Westhouse hotel for $215/night. I was not happy about this at first because another website had the price for $147/night. I contacted Priceline and they refunded me the difference + 20% extra so now I'm very happy with this purchase and know I got the best deal!

Thanks for all your help!!!
