Priceline Hotel: NYC in December

I'm planning to go to New York with my fiance mid to late December, around the 19th for two days. Ideally, we'd like to stay in Time Square, but I've been having a bit of an issue gauging how much I should bet on Priceline. I've gone around the $115 area based on the list provided on this site, but to no avail. If my fiance is coming from overseas and has never been to New York before, do you guys think Time Square is better? The financial district definitely has a lot of nice options, but I'm just worried about walking around and coming all the way back at night will get a little cold. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

...mid to late December, around the 19th for two days.

Are your plans/dates firm at this point in time? If not, are they flexible in terms that you can stay any dates near this range OR you have to have other things fall into place first (getting off from work, fiance able to make the trip to the States, airline tix, etc)?

I would continue to bid the Times Square zone, but if budget is an issue, i would also include other nearby zones around Times Square (we can walk you thru the pros/cons of each) as you will likely get a better value/deal outside of Times Square (while still remaining centrally located). See further comments here: Hotels Nears Times Square.

Rates should not be high during these dates, but $115 may not be that easy either, HOWEVER, i'm seeing what appears to be the Hudson Hotel offered for $95/nite. This hotel is very well located, but it also has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards) which may or may not work for your needs (an upgraded room is $115/nite, but this would be more 'normal sized NYC' so don't expect a palace even though it's an upgraded room)

Let us know your thoughts on the above and we'll take it from there.

Dates are flexible, but I was under the impression that hotel prices are cheapest during the weekend. I'm willing to go above the $115 range, but the reason I did auction was because I was trying to get the most bang for my buck, so even if I spend a $150, I'd like to spend a $150 on auction and get a 4 star as opposed to spending $150 on express and getting a 3.5 or 3 star. The only reason we're trying to stay at Time Square is because of it's location and my fiance has never been to the States before, so I thought it'd be nice for her to be somewhere famous across the globe, but it's not anything that's required. Basically, we're pretty flexible but the key is that if I pay more for the hotel, I'd like quality. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated :)

In NYC weekends are usually (but not always) cheaper than mid-week, but the hotel market has been getting stronger over the last few years (as has the economy) so $115 for a 4* hotel in Times Square may be too low.

While weekends are usually the cheaper than midweek, Sunday nites are generally the slowest nite of the week (as tourists have already gone home and business travelers have not yet arrived). As well, more specifically for your dates, there is little business travel going on this week due to the holidays, so i'm thinking that 12/21-12/23 may be some of the best dates around your timeframe... would these dates be OK?

If so please confirm if you're willing to accept other zones (which ones??), as well as your maximum bid, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow.

I'm willing to look at other zones, I've looked at everything from Time Square to the Financial District and while this might not be that far in distance, in terms of the number of hotels there were just way too much. I'm focused mainly on Time Square or the Madison Square Garden area, and anything in between or within walking distance to those areas. Would the 20th~22nd still be a lower price since it includes that Sunday in the middle? Also, if I were to extend the stay by a day, does that do anything for the price at all?

For which dates and star rating... and how high did you bid?

In theory yet, but as per above, i think your dates are a bit of a special circumstance given the very low amount of business travel the days just before Christmas, so when i had looked the other day, i found 12/20-12/22 to be the most promising dates at that time.

Also, if I were to extend the stay by a day, does that do anything for the price at all?

It very well could effect rates... when will your plans/dates be firm?

I can go as earliest as the 15th and return as late as the 28th, so long as the dates don't over lap with Christmas or Christmas Eve. If I stay longer, I can stay for one or two more days, so long as the price is reasonable. The financial district offered some good express deals hovering at around $130 for both priceline and hotwire, though I have yet to auction. The star range was, as I remember, 4 stars and up.

I think you first need to focus as to what is most important to you for this stay:

location, star rating, budget, ability to extend the trip

How would you rank the above in terms of priority? Would you stay downtown ('lesser' location for a nice hotel, would you stay Downtown if it gave you one extra day in the city, would you spend a little more to stay in midtown, etc, etc)

What exactly are your priorities for this stay? What price (per nite before taxes/fees) do you need to keep it at in order to extend the stay beyond two nites?

Are you ready to bid now and commit to a non-refundable reservation for this stay at this point in time?

I would say

1. Star rating

2. Location

3. Ability to extend trip

4. Budget

When you say downtown, are you referring to the Financial District area? If possible, I'd prefer to be a little bit more centralized than that, although if push came to shove I suppose I wouldn't be so adamant as to forego compromise. I'm a little curious as to when you say stay Downtown to get an extra day. Are you saying that I could find such a price difference that I could pay the same amount for three nights at a downtown hotel as I could for two nights at a central hotel, assuming that the hotels are the same star rating? If that is what you're saying, I could definitely make that deal.

Essentially, the priorities for this stay are tourism purposes. My finance has never been to the States and I want to show her New York. In order for the extension in days, I would say if I could cap it at around $400~$420 with taxes, it would be ideal.

I am ready to commit now if I am able to find the right place, so long as I find a good deal.

I didn't realize you emphasized the priorities. Over the course of three or four days, depending on how many nights we book, I want to take her around to a lot of the famous restaurants, take her to SoHo, maybe watch a play on Broadway, take in Time Square, and go to a couple nice cocktail bars. We may or may not go to the Statue of Liberty, depending on the weather conditions.

Could you stretch your budge to $488 all-in for the 3 nites?

If so, i would book the 4* hotel in the ESB zone for $126/nite (your price may differ by a few dollars) on HOTWIRE with:

Pet Friendly

Smoke Free

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Laundry

Hi-Speed Internet

Spa

If you look closely at this property it gets 4.5/5.0 reviews on all the criteria that HOTWIRE asks for feedback from previous guests, as well as a 4.5/5.0 TA rating (which is excellent). My guess for this property would be the Affinia Dumont, but even if it should happen to be some other properties, these review ratings almost ensures a great experience.

You may be able to get something $10-$20/nite cheaper but you'll then need to 'give' on something else in terms of location, star rating, etc... i think the offer above offers the best bang for your buck based upon what i'm currently seeing within your date range.
