Hotwire Hotel: General Miami Question

Hi,

Maybe someone who travels to Miami a lot can help me with this general question.

My son and I are travelling to Miami for a quick trip over the weekend of Friday 10/3 through Sunday 10/5.  He is going to be applying to the University of Miami and we are visiting the school.  He has never been to Miami and I've only been there one time very briefly almost 20 years ago.  We have only a very short amount of time there as we are flying in around 8:30pm Friday night, going to tour the school from about 9am till 12noon on Saturday, and then flying out Sunday morning at 9am.  Basically, we will only have Saturday afternoon as free time.  During that time, I'd like to go over to the Miami Beach area to walk around, have lunch/dinner, and go to the beach.

My question is, what is the best way to get around Miami?  Should we rent a car and drive around, or should  we be taking taxis or shuttles?  Is it possible to park at Miami Beach and is there a public beach we can go to?  We will only be going between the airport, a hotel (could be anywhere), the U of Miami in Coral Gables, and Miami Beach. This is all within like a 10 mile radius if i'm not mistaken.  Any advice on where to stay and how to get around would be great! I was thinking of just staying near the airport since it might be a little cheaper and the trip is so short, but I'm open to anything.

Thanks!

CC  :)

I would rent a car as you have schedules to keep (visiting the university) and a limited amount of time in the area... you can use our Car Rental Rate Checker to check rates from various providers including HOTWIRE and a page to bid on PRICELINE.

Please also remember to follow-up your Priceline Pittsburgh thread with whatever you end up doing for that trip... even if you don't use PRICELINE / HOTWIRE, cancel the trip, book direct, etc.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Once you decide upon zone(s) for this trip feel free to reply here and we'll try to assist further.

You might consider picking up a Miami guide book.  Your local library, local bookstore, or Amazon.com (a link on the Support Page above).  My personal favorite for directions and maps and good basic how-to information is Lonely Planet, but there are lots of other good ones.

Miami Beach is one really long beach.  You can walk along a boardwalk, for I think, miles.   Seemed that far anyway.  But fun.  Parking is possible, but you'll hunt for it.  There aren't that many bridges over to it, and the traffic can get backed up.  It definitely is worth doing a little research on the better ways to get there and to find parking.

I don't really know Miami, but with your situation I think I'd try for the MIA airport zone, Coral Gables and Miami Downtown (it is between the airport, Coral Gables and the beach.

Maybe somebody here with more specific knowledge will post.

You might also look at the Hotel Reviews area at the very end of this site, and the Hotel Lists (link in the header above) to see what hotels other bidders have received.

Hi guys, just to update this thread, I ended up booking the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay in the downtown Miami area.  I payed full price on the Hilton website because I decided I really wanted this particular hotel based on the room type (balcony overlooking the bay) and location.  I like the Hilton brand and Doubletrees in particular, and I get a few perks as a HHonors member, like free Internet and free breakfast coupons.  Thanks for all the input!

Thanx for the follow-up and closing this thread.

Please check for and use the links in our Support Page whenever possible for your non-opaque purchases, as we have links there to most of the major hotel chains and online booking agencies.

Have a nice trip!
