Priceline Hotel: Accommodation in New York City October 16 -October 19 2014

Hi All,

I shall be travelling to New York from 16th October (flight lands at 1500 at JFK) and leaving New York on October 19th (Sunday evening).

I have a budget of around $120-140 per night.

I am travelling to the States for the first time and I'm unaware of the local areas hence need special guidance.

My requirements for the hotel are as indicated below:

1) Hotel Star rating 3.5*-4*

2) Hotel area should be safe for late night travelling etc. I would like to avoid any dodgy areas.
3) The Hotel can be situated out of New York City too provided point number 2 is fulfilled and as long as I have easy access to Manhattan through Public transport (travelling no more than 40-50 min from the hotel to Manhattan). A subway link in that area would be preferred but without a subway would also do as long as the other means of public transport is convenient and inexpensive. (not more than 2- changes to reach the center and vice versa). Furthermore the public transport should also be operational till late hours in the night.

4) The purpose of the trip is sight seeing and exploring the New York City. Hotel will be required mostly for a comfortable sleep.

My own research yielded the following results, my reservations/drawbacks towards this choice are in the brackets:

Hotwire: $108 Newark Intl Airport EWR area Hotel 3.5* with free parking, free internet, fitness center, airport shuttle and self service laundry. It is 90% recommended by hotwire users and 4 out of 5 trip adviser rating. (I'm not sure how far this area is and whether this area would fulfill the conditions stated in point 2 and 3)

Some site deal:  Hilton Newark Penn Station $123 per night.

If someone could advise whether I should take one of the two above hotels in accordance with my requirements (whilst also making a good guess for the hotwire deal) or should I bid at Priceline (provided I have somewhat a chance to avail a better hotel). If bidding is proposed please let me know the strategy too.

In advance, I would like to thank you for your help and I really appreciate the effort of this forum. I'm using this forum for the first time and till now the experience has been fabulous.

Best Regards

Welcome to BetterBidding! (and thanks for the compliments on the site)

Your budget would be OK during low-season, but you're coming in the Fall and unfortunately $120-$140 doesn't go too far.

The Newark Airport area is typically not a convenient substitute for NYC as it is either a time consuming or an expensive commute... the exception is the Hilton Newark Penn Station, but that is not in a great neighborhood and also not sure how comfortable you would be commuting back to the hotel from NYC late at nite.

Just how late into the nite (morning) do you need transportation?

I will second what thereuare said.

You're not going to get anything in NYC for $120-$140 per night in the middle of October.

I've stayed at both a Newark Airport hotel AND the Hilton Newark Penn while traveling.

If you are only looking to spend what you said, I'd go with the Hilton Newark Penn any day over the Newark Airport hotels.

While the rates at the Airport hotels are usually cheaper, it costs more to get into the city, you have to take a shuttle to the airport to catch the train and there is almost nothing to eat (restaurants) near any of the Airport hotels.

If you stay at the Newark Hilton Penn, you are directly connected (via covered indoor walkway) to Newark Penn Station, where you can easily get into either Downtown or Midtown Manhattan.  If you want to go downtown, it costs $2.50 each way on the PATH and takes about 20 minutes. The cost to get to Midtown (NYC Penn Station) is $5 each way on the NJ Transit and takes about same amount of time.   There still isn't a whole lot to eat or see in Newark if you stay at Newark Hilton Penn, but your options are better than the airport hotels.

I'd consider looking in Secaucus, NJ.  They are usually much cheaper than NYC. A lot of them are located right next to a bus that will take you to NYC (via the Port Authority Bus Terminal) for about $4 and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes or so.  I'm pretty sure the buses run all day/night but I *MIGHT* be wrong.  Nice thing about this location is there is a ton of restaurants (most franchise, not local), some shopping and it's very safe, all within a 5 minute walk.

Guys,

Thank you for your valuable advise. This renders me to drop the newark area hotel and retain Hilton Newark Penn Station.

The latest i would like to travel is about midnight and not later than that.

I would be willing to bid on a hotel in Secaucus as indicated by Joninvb and my research yields that priceline are offering a hotel (with free internet, breakfast and parking) in its express deals at $133.5 per night. Other amenities include:

Free Breakfast
Free Internet in room
Free Parking
Pets Allowed
Restaurant
Business Center

Fitness Center

Please advise whether I should be bidding for a hotel in this area (and the appropriate bidding strategy).

The options for now include the Hilton Newark Penn station, the express deal for $133.5 in Secaucus area and the name your own price bidding hotel (which i would need to initiate)

Thanks and looking forward from hearing from you guys.

On PRICELINE EXPRESS right now, I see that same hotel for $110/night (plus taxes/fees)

3 Star

Secaucus/North Bergen

8+ Rating

Same amenities as you listed. Judging by this it's PROBABLY the Hyatt Place, which is a really nice hotel.

For this rate, I would buy from PRICELINE EXPRESS Deals.

Here is my strategy for this Express Deal.  This is after you have looked at Priceline.Express and saw a hotel that interests you.

1.   Look at area/star level/rating (8+)

2.   Open a new tab or window on browser and go to priceline.com

3.   Do search for a REGULAR hotel rate (i.e. not a PRICELINE EXPRESS deal) for same area (in this case, Secaucus) and same dates (Oct 16 to Oct 19)

4.   When results come up, filter on left hand side by "Secaucus -  Meadowlands" (Properties will update automatically as soon as you check this area)

4.   When results come up, filter on left hand side by 3 star properties (Properties will update automatically as soon as you check 3 star box)

5.   From here, you can continue to filter on left hand side by "Free breakfast" (Again, property list will update automatically)

6.   When I did this, only 4 hotels came up.  Of these, 3 of the 4 had an 8+ rating.  2 of these 3 had a 9+ rating. Only 1 that had the 8+ rating was the Hyatt Place. I looked at amenities and they are the same as the Priceline Express deal.  Because the said the hotel was rated 8+, Legally, they have to give you the hotel that is at LEAST rated 8+, meaning if something was rated a 7.8, you won't get that hotel. They could be sued for false advertising.

If I can be of any further assistance, please reply back :)

EDIT:  You can easily take bus back to the hotel at/around midnight. Port Authority Bus Terminal is located near Times Square.

The area around Newark Penn Station is not great (it's "OK" during the day and on nites when there are events at the nearby arenas as the police line the streets from the train station to the arena, but during the week i wouldn't go venturing out too far from your hotel (if at all))... whereas if the hotel above is indeed the Hyatt Place, it's located in an outdoor mall type of area with lots of food/restaurant options nearby, there is also a WalMart should you forget or need anything, and the bus stop is right by the hotel, iirc.

The only issue with NJ relative to your plans is travel to/from the hotel on the day of your arrival may be cumbersome:

1) JFK (via Long Island Railroad) --> New York Penn Station --> Port Authority --> Secaucus

2) JFK (via subway) --> Port Authority --> Secaucus

==> although #2 involves one less transfer, the subway is a much longer ride than the LIRR, and i would suggest taking the LIRR to save time

Here is a link to the NJ Transit Bus #320 which is the one that leaves by this hotel.
