Priceline Hotel: Help with Bidding Strategy

Hello,

I am planning to be in NYC from Sept10-12. I want to stay at a 4* hotel preferably in Times Square. The other less preferred option is Madison Square Garden.

Definitely not looking for a 3* place in any zones.

My upper limit for 4* place in TS is $185/night. Is this too low? If yes, whats the tentative price point that I should be looking at for TS/MSG?

Would you be able to suggest a bidding strategy for scoring a good deal in NYC for these dates?

Also, I was wondering if most hotels offer a room with 2 double/full beds, since I will be staying there with a friend..

Thanks!

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

NYC rooms are often smaller (or much smaller) than average for a major city. 2 beds - when available - is almost always a paid upgrade. Price.line only guarantees one bed/double occupancy - while you can call the hotel to try to negotiate two beds, the hotel may say no and in NYC that is unfortunately the most likely answer. Is 1 bed an acceptable risk?

Unfortunately, with the rates that I'm seeing, I think you're likely looking at over $200 for a 4*, likely in the $225-235 range.

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Any idea how much the paid upgrade would be tentatively?

I guess 1 bed would be an acceptable risk, and then I could call up the hotel and request/pay for the upgrade.. if its not exorbitantly expensive.

Would you suggest waiting until a week before and then trying to bid, to see if the rates drop?

If not, then I would have to work with $200 range..

It will vary significantly from hotel-to-hotel, but the issue is that whether or not to even offer the opportunity to upgrade to a two bed room is up to the hotel. There is a very, very high chance that the hotel will not offer the opportunity. In some cities, it's not difficult to negotiate two beds (Orlando, for example.) New York City is likely the city where there is the highest risk of not being able to get two beds when using the service.

PRICELINE EXPRESS offers listings and you can look for a listing with bed choice and one of the options is two beds, or search for 2 adults and 2 children (to indicate more than 2 people in the room) on HOTWIRE.

Still looking for a 4* hotel in TS, second preference being MSG..

Are you willing to pay more to stay in the TS zone vs. the MSG zone OR is the goal the least expensive 4* or better in either zone?

What should we use as your maximum bid for this stay?

... and please read your messages before replying.

Thanks.

When bidding 4* in NYC you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* Times Square...

Bid $205, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $220, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...

Select 4* MSG...

Bid $205, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $220, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...

Select 4* Times Square and MSG...

Bid $225, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $230

If the above is rejected PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* hotel in the MSG zone for $247/nite, but using code METRO6 will lower this by 5% bringing it down to $235/nite. This PRICELINE EXPRESS offer has the following amenities: Pets Allowed, Restaurant, Business Center, Fitness Center... my best guess for this one would be the Wyndham New Yorker. The rate i quoted above is for a Queen bedded room... for an extra $15/nite you can upgrade (during your purchase different Bed Choices are given) to a Queen Bed plus sofabed or for $25/nite to a room with 2 double beds.

Any questions feel free to ask.

...are these re-bid zones safe to use: Harlem, Chinatown, Bronx.

No, the above aren't zones that are used when bidding on PRICELINE. It sounds like you're trying to use the 'retail' side of PRICELINE to determine your re-bid zones on the 'bidding' side of PRICELINE, but this is not correct...

If you've already read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and are still confused, try the following:

1) Use the PRICELINE search box on the upper right of this page, enter your city and dates, and click "GO".

2) List each zone that is offered in this region.

3) Next to each zone list the highest star rating offered in the zone. The way to determine the highest star rating offered in the zone is by selecting the first zone i the list, then scrolling down to see the highest star rating selectable (ie- not greyed out). NEXT UNcheck the selected zone, place a checkmark in the next zone, and repeat the process for each zone in the region. Each time you take note of the highest star rating in the zone, make sure that only ONE zone is selected above.

4) post your findings and we'll take it from there

If you don't follow the above just post back and we'll break it down further.
