Priceline Hotel: Brief Chicago Stay - 08/23

Looking to stay in Chicago on 08/23 and visit Navy Pier. It will be myself, wife and a 15 month old.  Curious what the best place to stay would be? Looking for something under $150 or cheaper, however I don't really want to pay $40 just to park for one night. Any suggestions appreciated.

What star rating is it that you're looking for?

If you need to park at your hotel you're likely looking at $40+ to park, but you can likely find cheaper parking on your own at a privately owned or non-hotel garage... your alternative is to stay outside the city but that wouldn't be ideal with a 15 months in tow.

I'm sure AaronJB will reply once he sees this thread as he is local to the area, but you may want to indicate that your plans are for this trip (other than Navy Pier, which he will recommend you avoid :) ) so that he can better tailor the advice to your individual needs for this trip.

Navy Pier does have the children's museum, but aside from that, it's crowded, hot (although it's been an unusually cool Summer) and really not that memorable (restaurants include a very expensive McDonalds.) As someone local to the area, it was exciting when they completely re-did Navy Pier, but the end result largely feels like a tourist trap.

Personally, what I recommend as a family-friendly activity is the trio of Peggy Notabert Nature Center, the Lincoln Park Conservatory and the Lincoln Park Zoo, which are all right next to each other. The Zoo is fantastic and, somehow, still free. The Notabert does have a reasonable admission fee, but is very family-friendly, with a great live butterfly exhibit. The conservatory has terrific flower/plant shows (free.)

The suburban hotels offer cheaper hotel rates and free parking and also offer some great, family-friendly sights (Chicago Botanic Garden, Kohl's Childrens Museum),but it becomes whether taking the Metra train in sounds appealing.

Downtown hotels are going to cost as much as $50-60+ to park. Public lots are going to be cheaper, but still expensive. Unfortunately, parking in the city is ridiculous.

What would be your desired star rating?
