Never bid on flights before, when is my best timeframe to bid? a day before? 2 days before? and how low or high should I start my bids?

I would bid further in advance and certainly not recommend waiting until the last minute.

Where are you traveling from? What are your dates of travel? What is the best rate you're currently able to find thru conventional booking channels? How much of a discount would you need to make an opaque purchase (where you can't choose departure times, layover city, length of layover, etc) worthwhile?

i'm traveling from Philadelphia or newwark NJ, which ever is cheaper. i want to head out on the 20th.  the best i can find without bidding is 1169 and that seems pretty static for the last few weeks. I would like to get a ticket for 650-700 ish, it's worthwhile no matter the departure time or layover or any of that, just want to get the ticcket for roughly 600-700 if possible. 

 

I have no schedule currently i'm just trying to get a discounted flight to visit a person.

Deep discounts on airfare are far and few between, but you can get an almost unlimited number of re-bids using the technique discussed in this thread Priceline Airfare Re-Bidding (in particular see the second post)

You could start at some very low number (~$500) then increase $5-$25 per re-bid (greater increments at the lower numbers and smaller increments at the higher numbers) until you reach your maximum bid.
