Part youth-hostel, part motel, this 1* Inglewood, CA property (LAX zone on PL, HW) caters to the young and young-at heart by providing a combination of a) minimalist rooms and :) great amenities and service. I have stayed here twice, and I'd rather stay here than the LAX Hilton (I realize that's not saying much). The rack rate is about $55; I have recently stayed here for $39 (PL) and $41 (HW). (On HW it was $43 two days before, then $42 day before, then $41.) While I like the place for several reasons, it's not for everybody. Oliver Douglas would dig the place, but Lisa Douglas: Darling I love you but give me Fifth Avenue.

Also known as Adventurer and as Backpackers' Paradise, this property is located about a mile east of LAX on Century Blvd. in Inglewood. If you frequent LAX you have probably seen their (free) airport shuttle, festooned with ads like "99¢ Margaritas" and "Free Happy Hour" and "Free Continental Breakfast." I always looked at the bus and doubted they could deliver on all those promises -- but they do. They would probably give out free bongloads if they could.

The property is an older two-story (exterior corridors, no elevator) L.A. apartment building converted into a hotel with a college-dorm ambience. The first room, er, suite, we received consists of two small rooms with queen beds (no kings available), a wet bar with refrigerator, desk, TV, small bathroom with shower tub. Broadcast TV channels (over-the-air) + Showtime + A&E + ESPN. Although old, with a few holes and cracks in the walls, the room was clean and freshly painted. They have a security guard, and electronic deadbolt locks, but no peepholes or door chains. The staff had read the Helping Friendly Book. In another section there are dorms for backpackers (Sign on door: "Be in your assigned bed ONLY!") The second stay I had a "cottage" which consisted of a large living room with sofa, wet bar with stools, ceiling fan, 25" TV, and a bedroom with a queen bed.

No need for CC at check-in. Free parking. Warm (90° F) heated pool (9A-midnight), poolside food and bar service (9A-midnight). Poolside specials: 99¢ beer, wine, margaritas, hot dogs, ice cream. Restaurant (7A-11:30A, 6P-11P); full bar (6P-2A). Room service (7A-midnight), full restaurant and bar menu, no extra charge. Very reasonable food prices; very, very reasonable drink prices. Free coffee/fresh baked muffins (7A-11A); free coffee/tea/cookies (3P-5P); free cake (7P). Complete dinner for two incl. coffee, dessert, salad, soup, champagne, $22 for two with tax. Funky poolside gift shop (11A-midnight).

Video arcade, pinball, pool tables, vending machines incl. massage chairs, photo printer kiosk (takes memory sticks). Gift shop. Laundry; lockers. Pay internet kiosks ($1 /10 min, 25¢/page to print). Free wi-fi in lobby and in some rooms. Free bus rides to Venice Beach, Marina Del Rey, and shopping mall. Numerous other bus tours available.

Sketchy neighborhood in immediate vicinity of property, while property has good security, please do drive away don't walk away.

Oops. Lisa, of course, sang "give me Park Avenue" not "Fifth Avenue."

Ya gotta love something different! But I think I'll stick to the "Hilton." I do wonder how many rooms they sell on priceline. Pretty risky bidding on a 1-star in a large city.

Another PL stay here. This time everything went wrong. Bedbugs, no hot water, it rained and the roof leaked. Surly desk clerks (apparently they have a very high rate of staff turnover). I wonder if they have any other youth hostels around here....
