We have already booked our flight to NYC from 5/17 to 5/21, so dates are not flexible. We are really hoping to stay under $160/night for 3*-3.5*; not too picky about location, as long as it is in Manhattan. Is this unheard of for mid-May?! I realize that our first two nights will be Sat & Sun, so would it be smarter/easier to try to bid for two separate hotels (one for Sat/Sun and another for Mon/Tues) and increase the bidding price for the weekend dates? Unfortunately, mid-May is going to be busy in general - splitting the stay doesn't seem to be a real improvement in terms of average overall prices. $160 is worth trying (and you could even start a bit lower), but based upon the rate/s I'm seeing, I think it very well may take higher - at least $180-200, with 3.5* taking higher. Not really considering Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Morningside Heights. Another question -- when do you think the "optimal" time would be to try to bid/book? I've read that hotels may lower their rates around 2-3 weeks before.. but I'm not sure if that'll work for my particular weekend as it is a busy time of year. :( Link to comment
thereuare Posted April 20, 2014 Report Share Posted April 20, 2014 Few comments regarding this stay... 1) weekend dates in NYC are usually cheaper then mid-week dates, so if you do decide to SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, it would most likely be the other way around... lower bids for the weekend and higher bids for the mid-week dates. 2) when deciding which zones you are willing to bid on, don't consider price at this point in time... you want to include all zones that are acceptable. The more zones you can include the more you can optimize your bidding strategy to get the best price. As long as the zones you include are acceptable, the worst that can happen is you get accepted in the zone at a price even lower then you thought possible. BOTTOMLINE: adding zones that are acceptable, but you think your budget is too low for, can't hurt... but it can help 3) nobody can say if rates will come down, or move higher, between now and your stay, but with your budget of $160/nite i think any successful win for a 3* or better hotel in Manhattan would be 'pretty good' so i don't see any reason to wait. Please confirm the zone(s) you're willing to accept for this stay, we'll then comment further and suggest a bidding strategy to follow. Still hoping for something a bit lower though..Even though this is closer to your budget, this appears to be the less expensive 2 nites of your stay, so you also have to look at the cost for the next two nites and average them to see how this would compare to one hotel for your complete stay... the next two nites may be (likely) more expensive and not worth the time/effort of changing hotels (or you could stay in Manhattan for these two less expensive nites and then outside of the city for the next two more expensive nites) All zones are acceptable except for Brooklyn, Long Island City, & Morningside Heights.To avoid any confusion, please list the zones you are willing to stay in, rather than the zones you're not willing to stay in.
