Hi! I'm new to this board but very thankful for finding it. Lots of good info. My husband and I are planning a trip to Massachusetts, with 2 nights in Boston, on Sept 8 and 9 (a Sunday and Monday). We'd like to stay in either the theatre district (Boston Common, I think) or the financial district (Quincy Market). Our price range is approx $150/night USD (before taxes) - this is about the max that we'd like to go, if possible. Any tips on when to bid and how much to start? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the reply - I have read my messages and I think I understand how the board works - I will certainly use the links on this board to get to Priceline and Hotwire from now on.

To answer your question, we're looking for 4* hotels (or maybe 4 1/2*). Any tips/suggestions?

Thanks!

What star rating is it that you're looking for... at current rates your budget is likely in the right ballpark for a 3.5* property, but i'm guessing a 4* hotel would cost you closer to $180-$200/nite.

Let us know your desired star rating and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.

Nobody can say if rates will come down, or move even higher, between now and your stay... using MAPS and HOTELS.com for a quick visual overview, it appears that 4* hotels for your dates in these zones start at ~$250, so it's a question of whether something in the $180-$200 range (assuming we are correct on the necessary price range) is enough of a discount/value for your to lock in the price now OR if you want to wait it out and hope for cheaper rates in the weeks ahead (with the understanding that rates could move against you and head higher from here)

I'll also add that for ~$205 HOTWIRE has what appears to be the Fairmont Battery Wharf Boston as well as the InterContinental Boston, should either of these properties be ones that you want to try to target and are willing to pay a little extra for (vs. bidding on PRICELINE where there is no way to try to target or have a guess at any specific property).

Lastly, if you are bidding on PRICELINE, did you also want to consider the Copley Square-Back Bay zone which is generally considered to be centrally located with good access to the T system.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

Thank you for all of the information! We're definitely willing to wait at least a week or so (i.e., versus locking in now) to see if the prices could potentially come down - we don't want to wait much longer than 2 weeks before we go (so 2 weeks from now at the very latest). ~$200/night would not be outside of our price range, but it would be nice if we could do a bit better. To answer your other question, I think we'd be willing to look at Copley if it is considered central - we want to be able to walk everywhere and on the Priceline map it looked a little away from things. Would most everything be walkable from that area, do you know? If so, then Copley would be fine too.

Thanks again very much for your assistance!

Depends on what kind of stuff you're going to be walking to.

Prudential building, best shopping areas, upscale restaurants, all right in the Copley neighborhood.

Part of the Copley/Back Bay area is very close to the Boston Garden/Common.

Chinatown or Beacon Hill (historic, State House) maybe a mile.

Aquarium, North End (historic neighborhood, also now Italian neighborhood) probably not walking distance.

All of these things are very easy by public transportation, though.

If your main plan is to walk around the historic areas (the Freedom Trail, say) Quincy Market or Boston Common areas are a bit better, but probably not worth spending a *lot* of extra money for.

I think this is the key point... take advantage of mass transit when in a city as it will often save you precious time for not a lot of money. While i love to walk around cities, when vacation time is limited, why spend 20 minutes walking someplace when you can do take the train and be there in 5 minutes. (same goes for saving money on a hotel... why not save $25, $50, etc. if you're just a 5 minute train ride away?) And as you can see from the comments above, Copley is still considered to be 'central' given the shops, stores, etc. so it's not like you're on the outskirts of the city and/or in a suburb.

I'm not sure what you could consider to be a 'good deal' based upon current rates, but whatever that figure is, i would begin bidding now up to that point (ie- you don't have to bid up to your $200 maximum bid now... but if say $160 would be worthwhile for your to lock something in now, then i would start and use that as your upper bidding limit)

Let us know if/when you're ready to start, confirm your zones and maximum bid, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow.

OK, so we've talked about it, and for now we'd like to see if we can stay in the Theatre of Financial district - with the understanding that we'll probably pay more than if we included Copley. We're ready to start bidding - would you say that starting in the $160 range would be appropriate?

Thanks again!

Rates have come down a little so i've take the liberty of adjusting your maximum bid downward slightly (and should the following be rejected you'll then likely have other options at this price point)...

When bidding 4* in Boston you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

I'm very impressed with the information and instructions that you've provided - thank you! Unfortunately we learned yesterday that my husband has been referred to a medical specialist and the appointment is on Sept 10(we can say no to this because these appointments are very hard to come by). We now are thinking of trying to do this trip the following week (i.e., the 2 nights in Boston would now be Sept 15 and 16, or Sept 16 and 17, but now we can't book anything until after Sept 10, pending the results of this appointment (we're completely optimistic that everything will be fine, but don't want to be stressed that we have something that we can't cancel just in case we have to stick around for follow-up after his appointment). So now I'm looking for your professional opinion - would we possibly be able to start bidding on Sept 10 for Sept 15-16 or 16-17, or would this likely be too late (in which case we'll probably just decide to do something else this year and see BOston next fall). We're really disappointed, but have learned in life that medical stuff comes first. And we'd realy appreciate your input on this - any info/insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to her about the medical situation and hope everything will go well and be okay.

In terms of waiting until the last minute, there's really no way to know - rates can go higher towards the date and the Fall is generally a busier time of year. However, they may stay around these levels or if traffic comes in less than expected, come down a bit.

You could book a refundable reservation now if there is a property offering a refundable rate at an acceptable price on a service like Expedia, etc. That way, you are hedged if rates go up closer to your stay and you can cancel if you don't go or if something better comes along when you're ready to book. Do definitely double check the fine print regarding cancel policy if you go that route.

Thank you for using the board's Expedia, HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Thank you for your well wishes - as I said, we're very optimistic that all will be well... just can't miss this appointment. After talking today about our options for this vacation, we realized that we might also be able to travel the week before we had initially intended so out stay in Boston could be either Sept 1-2 or Sept 2-3; can I ask your opinion on what rates would be appropriate to bid for those dates? Again, your help and all of the information has been really great - invaluable. Thanks again and in advance!

  • 11 months later...

I apologize for posting late regarding the results of my Boston trip!  We ended up going in mid-October last year, we ended up at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Boston (theatre district), and we paid $160/night.  I really appreciated your assistance with helping to get this deal!
