Hotwire Hotel: Different amount of hotels when kids left off

Has anyone else noticed that when you search with kids, sometimes you get less hotel listings than if you search with kids? I guess it makes sense because they may give you a room with only one bed, but what if the 2 adults want separate beds?

Also, what happens if you book with just 2 adults, but you show up with 2 adults and 2 kids? Can they cancel the room? Has anyone had any problem with this?

HOTWIRE only shows one hotel at each star rating per zone... the hotel with the lowest price is the one that is offered. With this is mind, there a few explanations for the offerings may change when you include/remove children/guests from the search:

Some hotels charge extra for kids others to do not. Take the following example:

Hotel A: $50/nite + $10/nite for each kid

Hotel B: $60/nite and no charge for kids

Search for 2adults/0kids and Hotel A is offered. Change your search to 2adults/2kids and HotelB becomes the least expensive ($60 vs. $70) and is therefore the one offered.

Some hotels only make their rooms available for 'double occupancy' and won't show when searching for more than two guests. This may be because their 'standard' rooms can only accommodate double occupancy, or that they want to flexibility to assign the room at check-in. If a hotel only has to satisfy that the "will accommodate double occupancy" it becomes easier for them to hold you reservation since your room becomes a 'flex' room that they can assign to almost any room in the property. This makes it easier for them to manage their room inventory (especially for busier nites) and accommodate guests who are looking to book a specific room type (and will to pay 'retail' rates).

While it can happen that a guest is turned away (especially in a place such as NYC where rooms are notoriously small and many standard rooms only have one bed), the more likely scenario is that the hotel insists upon an extra person charge to accommodate the extra guests. However, even if you're willing to pay, there could be a problem if the hotel is at or near capacity and doesn't have any rooms available to accommodate the number of people that you have in you party.

All PRICELINE reservations are guaranteed for double occupancy and HOTWIRE reservations are guaranteed for the number of guests you included in your search. Anything more, including room type, number of beds in the room, city/ocean view, etc, etc is at the discretion of the hotel.
