Extra day/hour charges

Does anyone know how extra hourly or daily charges are calculated for cars rented through Priceline? I'm renting a car at SFO, and will be bringing it back about two hours after the 24 hour cycle. When I enter the hours I need to rent it for - say between 7:00pm on Tuesday and 9pm on Friday it calculates the time period as 4 days. I wonder if I enter 7 through 7pm, and then just pay extra charges for two hours - how much will that be?

Thanks in advance for any information!

The extra hour charge will be based upon the prevailing retail rate and will be printed on your contract at the time of rental (you can ask at the counter if you're unsure). Depending upon the daily rate of your rental, in my experience 2 hours is about the breakeven point as 2 hours is usually about the same as the daily rate.

If you're trying to avoid an extra charge pick up the car an hour later and return the car an hour earlier :)

Just to update the board on this. I ended up renting a car from LastMinuteTravel - their rates were much better than anything PRICELINE or HOTWIRE offered, or I bid up to. I got the car from Hertz, and it appears they didn't offer any hourly late charges, only daily ones. I did bring the car back about 2.5 hours late, and was charged for one full extra day. The price was about $10 more than what I paid through LMT, so in a hindsight I should've just paid for 4 days. Oh well, will know better next time.

Thanks for a very useful board.

As thereuare stated, the breakeven point is 2 hours, so if you exceeded that, you'd be charged for a full day.

New info: By my experience, it is much easier to extend a rental agreement by incremental days than it is to shift a pickup time, but fortunately enough flexibility is built in to a reservation to allow for most contingencies. One time my flight was 8 hrs late getting in, and fortunately the rental agency offered 12 hours flexibility for RSVP's before charging a cancellation fee. YMMV.
