Priceline Hotel: Search Strategy for Maui (Wailea) Hotel 3/16/11

Hi,

I am trying to figure out the best search strategy to use to get a hotel for nine nights starting on 3/16/11 in Maui's Wailea/Makena area.

I have been to Maui many times. I stayed at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort (MB&GR) two years ago on a deal through Priceline for $160 per night. Loved the place and the deal.

I am going back next month and am now working to get a hotel res. I'd be perfectly happy getting the same place and a similar deal.

I am very worried about unintentionally winding up in the "higher-rated" Wailea Marriott "Resort" & Spa (WMR&S) which, I agree with other reviewers on this site, is a better located but much less attractive and desirable property).

The winning bid prices for these two places seem frighteningly close. I would like to somehow try to get the MB&GR property, or anything rated better in Wailea/Makena that does NOT include the WMR&S.

Does anybody have any insights or suggestions for how best to approach this goal? I will be certain to post my results when I confirm them next week.

Thanks. Great site!!

Alan

You can't bid or avoid a specific hotel when using PRICELINE. You have to be able to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating (or higher) you select.

If you're trying to target a specific property then HOTWIRE can often be a better option if you're successfully able to identify it based upon the star rating and amenities shown before your purchase... the trade-off is that HOTWIRE usually costs a little more than PRICELINE, so you need to decide what is most important to you for a given stay, the lowest possible price OR the ability to take an educated guess as to the property you may receive.

That is very good advice thank you.

I feel like Makena will come through at a lower price than Marriott, but Mariott has been cheaper at times based on what is posted by others around here. I may stick with Priceline and take the location risk to get the lower price (and keep my fingers crossed hoping that I do wind up in Makena).

Thank you very much for your thoughts! I will report back with the result whatever it is in coming days ......
