2* Fayetteville Baymont Inn

Checked a great online travel search engine (one that checks multiple websites) that I've used before to book rooms at specific hotels. Also checked a great reviews website too. From that, I thought I had a good chance of getting a good room for a decent price using Priceline.

So, I used the link from betterbidding.com website to access PRICELINE and bid $65 for a 2 * hotel for one night. Based on the posts, there was a 2 1/2 * hotel that I wanted to make sure I did not get. This was done on October 8, 2009.

I won the Baymont Inn. With fees and everything, the final price was $81 and change. Sadly, this was more expensive than the hotel's own website. It also alarmed me that the hotel had some very bad reviews on the travel website alluded to earlier (#39 of 44 hotels approximately in Fayetteville - site says 50 total, but some are out of business). The hotel's website showed $78 for all rooms except their big suite, which I assumed I did not win; the room rate was actually $69, but the taxes were only like $9, making it cheaper than PRICELINE's final price.

Not entirely pleased for paying more for a room than "up to 50% less" for the room by using PRICELINE, I called Priceline to complain. After putting me on hold a few times and asking which website had the cheaper rate (the Baymont's own website, incidentally), the agent offered to credit me $11, though refused to change the hotel.

I was really hoping to get the TownePlace which I had won on priceline earlier in the year in Wilmington. Oh well.

We will see how this pans out. Perhaps the hotel will be better than the reviews indicate. This is the first time I've been really displeased with Priceline; the hotels it's picked for me in the past have been great and at great prices. At least they lowered the price a little bit.

4* Los Angeles (Beverly Hills-West Hollywood) Hyatt Century Plaza

Booked it for 2 night. Bid $95 and added Hollywood and voila!

Looks like a great hotel, I'm splitting the cost with a friend so its great for both of us.
Only downside are the extras
Do you have to pay for the internet and spa?

2* Ashland Days Inn

2* Ashland, KY

Amenities:
Complimentary Breakfast
Pool(s)
High-speed Internet Access

Hotel
Hotwire hot Rate: $59.00
Nights: 1
Rooms: 1
Subtotal: $59.00
Tax recovery charges and fees: $14.12
Total price: $73.12

I gambled and lost. I went over the hotels in Ashland and tried to identify the hotels without a fitness center. Since this hotel does in fact have one, I ruled out the Days Inn as a possibility, and thought this might be the Ramada Ltd.

What's worse is that this win presented a situation I've been running into a lot lately - this rate is literally pennies lower than the lowest posted rate, and after I pay hotwire its fees, I am paying more money than if I booked direct.

I understand the risk/reward of hotwire, I like their customer service much better than Priceline and I'll keep playing the game. But, this time I drew a dud hand.
