I just got back from the resort and I'm happy to say that it was great!

The outside of the hotel isn't much to look at compared to it's surroundings, but once you step into the lobby it's beautiful and cozy. The renovations are nice and the rooms themselves are comfortable and Tahoe-y but not over the top (AC is a bit loud). The resort has a great location by the lake (although note that the actual hotel tower is across the street from the lake front. The resort beach, restaurant and lake front suites are by the lake). The location is the best part of the hotel. It has great views of the lake from the tower, try to get a room on the upper floors. Along the rim of the lake are public access beaches that look well taken care of. There are nicely maintained walk paths everywhere. You do have access to the resorts private beach that has nice cabanas for shade.

The Lone Eagle restaurant was also good, if not pricey. I would recommend if anything to just get drinks/appetizers and sit outside in front of the firepits and enjoy the sunset and the crisp night air. They even provide blamkets and wind screens on some of the patio chairs. I only wish we had more time to explore the whole resort. We never got to the pool.

I can also recommend the Mountain Rose (I belive that was what it was called....) golf course. It looked like it was straight of a golf video game.

I'm going to try and go again either Labor Day weekend or Thanksgiving. Hopefully for the same great hotwire rate. The people who got the $112 priceline rate got a steal. I would definitely recommend more than one night in Tahoe!

Saw a post asking about north Tahoe hotels, and realized that I never posted my review of an August stay. Here you go...

Mixed feelings about this stay. Nothing went wrong, per se, but it wasn’t quite our bag. The hotel is nice enough, and is probably the nicest hotel on Lake Tahoe, period. But the casino atmosphere in the middle of this beautiful nature – not just at the Hyatt – somehow was uneasy. (It’s a tension I don’t feel in Vegas or Atlantic City, for what it’s worth. This is a hard feeling to quantify…) To specifics:

Rustic meets contemporary décor in the room. Spacious. Mountain view is quite nice. There is a small but busy casino downstairs. One important note: The hotel is not on the waterfront per se. There are some “cabins” on the waterfront, and one hotel restaurant is overlooking the water. However, the majority of the rooms are in a tower across the street and a 5 minute walk to the private beach. The beach facility rents canoes/kayaks ($30/hour for a 2-person kayak). Nice pools, hot tubs, etc., which are next to the tower.

Various observations:
- Bathroom is quite nice, and the Hyatt products (Portico Verbena) are always a pleasure.
- No Priceline discrimination for room choice, quite the contrary – we had a seemingly larger than average room at the very end of the hall. The two rooms that face each other at the end of the hall have an additional door, sort of an anteroom that can be closed off from the rest of the hallway (your room key opens that door as well).
- Got Hyatt Gold Passport points for the cost of the resort fee. We had no other charges on the room, so I don’t know if other charges would give points. I presume they would have, though. (I know Hyatt is changing their policy going forward, so the days of ANY Hyatt points for Priceline stays may be over.)
- Upon registration, I was asked to initial a statement affirming that I would be charged $12 resort fee per day. The resort fee provides for bottled water, access to the pools/hot tubs, and probably something else that I’m forgetting. The fee ended up actually being $10 per day. I am always annoyed by these fees, especially when they are not optional. (And especially when I’m not on a Priceline reservation…) If you’re paying good money to be at a nice hotel, you’re should be allowed to enjoy the facilities. Grrr…. Optional resort fees annoy me too, but less. For example, the Hilton Sedona makes it optional, if you’re not going to use the whirlpool, etc. But, seemingly, it’s not optional here. Now that I think about this in retrospect, I didn’t think to question it at the time of check-in. My advice: Ask. Maybe even call them up in advance to find out if the resort fee can be declined…
- Television-based check-out didn’t work, but they had a voicemail check-out alternative which I used.
- The facility is surprisingly family oriented, with a separate kids’ pool, and “Camp Hyatt” recreation area for younger children who can be supervised by hotel staff.
